Check out Wilson Pickett's Hey Jude. Duane Allman's outro lead guitar solo sends chills up and down my spine every single time I hear it.

Re: Guess Who died in 2018

Best show I ever saw was Wilson Pickett, and "Hey Jude" was its highlight.

Freezing cold March night at The Ritz. Coldest night of the year. We were supposed to see Violent Femmes at Carnegie Hall, but our tickets said "obscured view" due to the scaffolding that was part of their renovation (and the only reason they were booking rock acts at the time, I'd guess). So we sold our tickets to some kid with weird hair, and went and saw Hannah and Her Sisters, grabbed a Village Voice to see what else was going on, and committed to go to see Wilson afterwards. To be young in New York with a few $$ in your pocket. Sweet!

It was a late show, and it was cold in that way only New York can be cold, where the wind can pick you up and toss you across the street. So cold we got disoriented down in the Village, and couldn't find our way until we stopped and heard "Land of 1,000 Dances" on the breeze. We hustled in the direction of the sound and it turned out to be a lone mechanic working late and in the cold at his garage, blasting a then-current version of "LoaTD" by an all-star group of WWF wrestlers to keep him warm. Crazy!

Somehow we got our bearings and found our way to the Ritz, and it was special in the way on The Ritz could be special — where the time before a show wasn't filled with folks jostling for position and smoking and hunching, but actually joyously dancing. So we walked in at 11ish, checked our parkas, danced to half a record, and then walked right to the stage's edge as the opening act, Mitch Ryder, fresh out of cocaine rehab, took the stage. Wilson, true to his lyrics, didn't come on 'til the midnight hour, and he and every note insisted that booties shake. He pulled the best dancers up on stage, pretty little 98-pound teenage chixx, yeah, but middle-aged fatties too. Pickett didn't discriminate. They needed some big-league pulling by Pickett, too, so we got under their asses and helped hoist them up. By the time he got to "Hey, Jude" the whole place was singing together like a Scottish football rally. The guitarist started his outro referencing Duane Allman's original but then went in his own direction, and on and on. Catharasis! Rarely have I fully understood that word.

Southern soul cooked just right is just the greatest music.

A few years later, when Wilson Pickett was being inducted into the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame, I was working at SPIN. Nobody wanted to go to the ceremony so I said HELL YEAH. I gots my formal wear ready, but at the last minute, a senior editor deigned to go instead, and I got bumped. That day the Gulf War started, and Wilson's flight got cancelled, which might have been for the best, as he didn't endure Bobby Brown giving the worst induction tribute in the Hall's history, essentially acknowledging that apart from the nickname "Wicked Pickett," he didn't really know who Wilson Pickett was.

By the way, I coincidentally heard this yesterday, which is living proof that Wilson could make anything sound greasy and soulful. Number 25 in 1970, less than a year after the original went to #1.

Dick Orkin, 84. (It happened in December, but that thread is closed.)

Orkin was a radio announcer and comedian, best known for creating both Chickenman and The Tooth Fairy, two series of two-minute radio comedies that were syndicated in the 70s and developed a cult following.

I'm not sure if Chickenman ran in the NYC area (it originated from Chicago), but I do remember The Tooth Fairy.

Orkin and his partner Bert Berdis went on to write and perform in radio advertising, following in the footsteps of Stan Freberg by creating clever and funny ads that were all over the radio in the late 70s and winning multiple Cleo awards for best advertising.

Keith Jackson, longtime announcer, and for many the definitive voice, of Saturday afternoon college football - age 89
He was not nearly as good at baseball, but that was he paired with Tim McCarver on Game 6 1986 Mets/Astros. That was, in fact, his final MLB game.
He was also on the mike for 1977 Game 6 WS (Reggie x3), or at least he was when Cosell wasn't stepping all over his p-b-p.

Also did Olympics, college hoops, and auto racing.

Keith also changed the nickname of a college football team.
The Saturday College Football Game of the Week was (partially) sponsored by General Motors.
One day, the SMU Mustangs were playing. Keith, so as not to offend the sponsor by using the name of a competitor's product throughout the game, started calling them the "Ponies" and other announcers and writers began calling them by that name for a while.

Bryne's passing got by me. I spent time with him at Lawrenceville during the darkest times. He asked the group from Eagleton before a presser that if it got too nasty in the room, throw up a question about Notre Dame football so he could get his sea legs. He did what he had to do and I have the highest respect for B.B.

Re: Guess Who died in 2018

I've made a lot of comments about the alarming mortality of the frontpersons for bands associated with the 90s, but as far as I know she wasn't reputed to have chemical issues, unlike so many of her contemporaries. I know she did profess at one point to be bipolar.

I thought they were great, although their singles really outshone their album tracks, as if they were using ambitious production to make up for whatever limitations they had. But they came across without artiface, even without the comparing them to grunge-era acts. They just seemed like decent Limerick folk who got lucky and knew it.

They were rare birds who broke in the US before breaking in Ireland or the UK, and the UK music press seemingly didn't trust them because of that, so it took a few years before their status in Europe was as big as it was here. I remember them playing the Mall in DC and getting increasingly wearied by the audience slamming aggressively and at inappropriate moments. She asked them to calm down and they started throwing bottles at her. The band left the stage and in came the riot police.

The 90's, man. What a jerky era.

:(
RIP Mr. Hawkins.

Wow, I thought the lyric was "When Jesus walked" but it's "When Jesus washed".
I am amazed at how many 60s song lyrics I am totally wrong on. I must blame my transistor radio, I guess.
Name any song from the 1960s and I'll tell you what I thought the lyrics were.

Just read this:____
Born in Oakland, he sang in church and family choirs before founding the 46-member Northern California State Youth Choir of the Church of God in Christ. They were renamed the Edwin Hawkins Singers when an album was recorded for Pavillion Records. The group also backed up Melanie on her #6 hit in 1970, "Lay Down (Candles In The Rain)"...
Edwin was elected to the Christian Music Hall of Fame in 2007...
_____

When I think about it, yes, it's easy to hear them, to know it's them, on Melanie's song. Both powerful songs that I loved.
Both songs REALLY bring back memories of the playground in Lefrak City. Even in 1969 someone had a radio blasting in that playground.
Great times.

PS:are spellchecks everywhere actually getting stupid?
Especially on gadget phones.

Naomi Parker Fraley, 96, identified only recently as the inspiration for Rosie the Riveter.

During World War II, Fraley was a factory worker at Alameda Naval Station, according to CNN affiliate KATU. She was one of millions of women across the United States who filled the labor force during the war. While Fraley was working a press photographer approached her to take her picture, Blankenship [her daughter-in-law] said.

Over 60 years later, Fraley attended a convention for women who, like Rosie the Riveter, worked during the war. There, said Blankenship, Fraley saw a photograph promoted as the likely inspiration behind the iconic image of Rosie the Riveter in the "We can do it" poster.

Blankenship says Fraley immediately recognized the picture as the one the photographer captured of her all those years ago.

Mort Walker, creator of long-running comic strip Beetle Bailey as well as the too-often-overlooked brilliance of Hi and Lois, and probably a friend of the Lunchbucket/Knot family, has inked his last strip at 94.

Little-appreciated fact: both strips were set in the same universe, with Beetle being Lois' little-mentioned, ne'er-do-well brother-in-the-army.

Early Beetle Bailey was a college kid, cutting class and chasing girls. It had a niche audience, but it wasn't growing.

It was the first year. Walker got wind that the syndicate was losing interest and thinking about pulling the plug. College hyjinx just wasn't universal enough to be broadly relatable.

Then the light went off over Mort's head. He drew a strip that featured Beetle downtown on a corner.

The Korean War was on, and there were a lot more folks heading into the service than heading for school. The strip lasted 66 more years.

While he's most famous for Beetle Bailey, Mort Walker was also one of the co-creators of Boner's Ark, which I remember reading in Newsday when I was a kid. Boner, unlike Noah, only brought one member of each species onto his ark.

Wikipedia wrote:
Boner's Ark was an American comic strip created by Mort Walker, also the creator of Beetle Bailey. Walker debuted the strip under the pseudonym "Addison" on March 11, 1968. The title is a reference to Noah's Ark of Abrahamic religions.

Designed and written by Mort Walker, Boner's Ark first appeared on March 11, 1968. The series ran until 27 May 2000, with the final strip depicting the Ark reaching dry land.

Anyone who ever spent more than a few minutes in a ski lodge or at a ski bar (or so I've heard) has seen their share of Warren Miller films running as if on an endless loop on whatever screen was nearby.
A ski (and surfer) bum himself later turned filmmaker, Miller died this past week at age 93 after churning out what seemed like mountains (pun intended) of exhilarating footage from ski slopes around the world.

Mort Walker lived in Stamford, CT when I was growing up there as a kid. His personal collection was on display at the peripatetic Museum of Cartoon Art which my Dad took us to a couple of times.

Cullen Murphy, who wrote Prince Valiant with his father illustrating from 1980-2004, and also graduated from my high school a couple of decades before I did, has written a book about all the cartoonists and illustrators who lived in Fairfield County, CT and how they worked and socialized together.

I remember visiting the museum in the 1980s, while I still lived on Long Island. It was in an old castle in Rye, if I remember correctly.

Tough to comprehend all these years later what eclipsing that four-laps/four-minutes barrier meant at the time.
While in some ways it was just a symbolic breaking of a round number, one which had seemingly mocked man's attempts to shave that final second off for some nine years -- and, once broken, it indeed became open season on the mark as the new record lasted just weeks and it was just months before multiple runners were breaking the mark in the same races implying that the barrier had been psychological all along -- in other ways it was a demonstration, contrary to some thought at the time, that man's improvement had not stalled. And particularly in the dreary post-WWII era in Britain, Bannister's run, along with Hillary's ascent of Everest the previous year, gave hope to think that maybe the best of humanity wasn't all behind them.

Not that I know of although she did once claim, to Sir Edmund's face no less, that she was named after him, right down to citing the unusual double-l spelling.
The problem? Hillary Rodham was born in 1947, six years prior to his fame-making climb in the Himalayas. Prior to that he was an obscure bee-keeper living and climbing in New Zealand and not generally known to young couples living in suburban Chicago trying to decide on names for their eldest child.
But then, adherence to the truth has never been her strong suit.

He was a writer on the unintentionally hilarious Delvecchio, a detective drama starring a pre-Taxi Judd Hirsch.

Delvecchio cast members Michael Conrad and Charles Haid would become part of the Hill Street Blues ensemble, as well as semi-regulars George Wyner and James B. Sikking (who would also be part of the Doogie Howser cast).

Watch that opening if only for the action-packed thrill of watching Delvecchio ponder a crime scene while absent-mindedly pointing his own revolver at his face.

There used to be a guy who sold beer from the back of his bicycle to us softball players on the Great Lawn (this is truly back in the day). One year David the beer guy wasn't there, and it turns out he was one of the actors on Cop Rock. I had no idea until I watched the show (once) and there was David the Beer Guy as Officer Andy Campo! The series got cancelled and the next year he was back selling Budweisers in the park, but saying it was the best experience of his life. Then the next year he was on Sisters and we had to make do with the random guys who charged more and didn't keep it as cold. He never came back after that.

Looked him up and he's had a modest career, http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0316344/ but I'm guessing he's still doing something on the side.

Jim contracted polio at the age of four, went through a few dozen operations and became a bitter and wild young man. When my dad was a young cop, he'd come in from a long shift and then get a call to pick up his brother-in-law following some bar fight or car wreck.

He got his shit together, and managed a helluva successful life, including 50 years of sobriety, and his accordion was a joy to listen to.

Eighty years is a good run for a man who barely survived Kindergarten. It was a life worth celebrating.

My cousin told me something I never knew. They could rarely watch cartoons on Saturday morning. They'd come downstairs and there'd invariably be a stranger sleeping on the couch. At the Friday night AA meeting, he'd bring home some broken newcomer whose life had only just recently fallen apart, which is a nice full circle from having been the drunk waking up on my parents' couch.

I just realized that up above, it looks like he's teaching me to roll up my sleeves and manspread.

He became, in his adult life, a pianist with a much stronger right hand and a left that played bass notes in a very accordionish, punch-each-note-like-a-button fashion. He would bust out the squeeze box once in a while to give us a titter.

Bell's show, 'Coast to Coast' lives on through various hosts though Bell left the show a while back. I never heard Bell during his time but I catch the show every once in a while now during sleepless bouts.
I don't believe a word of this UFO stuff but I do have an odd fascination with those who do and the host(s) of C-t-C are funny in that both the existence and the gov't coverup of alien visits to this planet aren't
even a question in their minds so they just speculate on when the feds are going to finally fess up and release all the info that they've somehow managed to keep secret from all of us over the last six or seven decades.

Due to the presence of John Podesta (a BIG UFO guy) on Hillary's staff and a thrown-away line HRC once gave to a UFO question ("I'll certainly do my best to get all information out there') many of these guys
were convinced this country was just weeks away from finally learning the "truth". But, alas, the suppression continues.

It came over my house at about 200 feet. My neighbor, as well as hundreds of people in NY and Western CT, also saw it.
And the official explanation, low powered home built aircraft flying in formation, was bullshit then and is still bullshit today.
I have shelves of aviation books and this was no group of aircraft. It was silent and the distance between the lights never varied. Even military stunt flying groups like the Blue Angels can't do that. (I saw it for over five minutes, as it slowly move toward the Northeast and then sped away.)
But I never listened to the show.

Only two other possibilities between Nixon and GHWB, so far, as both Carters are still alive and kicking. Carter always surprises me, as the news about three years ago was that he had a brain tumor and was given only a few months to live.

Before Nixon, the last president to outlive his spouse was Hoover, who outlived his Mrs. by 20 years.

I didn't follow wrestling as a kid (or ever for that matter) but I heard the names and for some reason had the idea that Bruno's time was well before my time [turns out it wasn't] which would have made him
an old man several decades ago. And, let's face it, most ex-wresters have a tough time getting past 60 much less making it to 80+

For WOW! factor in the mid-'70s among young men in the sixth-seventh grade demographic, Bruno Sammartino was right up there with Bruce Lee and Evel Knievel. All three were discussed in excited tones that the professional athletes covered by newspapers, magazines and sportscasts, even those who led local teams to playoffs and championships, never matched.

William Nack, 77, wrote about horse racing like Secretariat participated in it.

From Nack's long-form piece in Sports Illustrated following the death of Secretariat (with some accompanying Neil Leifer photography) is his description of 'Big Red's' win at The Belmont Stakes:

I stood in awe. I had never seen a horse so fit. The Derby and Preakness had wound him as tight as a watch, and he seemed about to burst out of his coat. I had no idea what to expect that day in the Belmont, with him going a mile and a half, but I sensed we would see more of him than we had ever seen before.

Secretariat ran flat into legend, started running right out of the gate and never stopped, ran poor Sham into defeat around the first turn and down the backstretch and sprinted clear, opening two lengths, four, then five. He dashed to the three-quarter pole in 1:09â…˜, the fastest six-furlong clocking in Belmont history. I dropped my head and cursed Turcotte: What is he thinking about? Has he lost his mind? The colt raced into the far turn, opening seven lengths past the half-mile pole. The timer flashed his astonishing mile mark: 1:34â…•!

I was seeing it but not believing it. Secretariat was still sprinting. The four horses behind him disappeared. He opened 10. Then 12. Halfway around the turn he was 14 in front ... 15 ... 16 ... 17. Belmont Park began to shake. The whole place was on its feet. Turning for home, Secretariat was 20 in front, having run the mile and a quarter in 1:59 flat, faster than his Derby time.

He came home alone. He opened his lead to 25 ... 26 ... 27 ... 28. As rhythmic as a rocking horse, he never missed a beat. I remember seeing Turcotte look over to the timer, and I looked over, too. It was blinking 2:19, 2:20. The record was 2:26â…—. Turcotte scrubbed on the colt, opening 30 lengths, finally 31. The clock flashed crazily: 2:22 ... 2:23. The place was one long, deafening roar. The colt seemed to dive for the finish, snipping it clean at 2:24.

I bolted up the press box stairs with exultant shouts and there yielded a part of myself to that horse forever.

"Phil?"

“Yes.”

“It’s Dad. You’ve never seen anything like it. Mets won in the sixteenth.”

“Great. I was going to phone you a little later.”

“I only just got up. I knew you’d be wondering. They were down three in the ninth. Did I tell you this last night, about the ninth?”

“Don’t worry. Tell me everything.”

“Get this. They get three runs in the ninth. They go ahead four three. That pitcher is in there.”

“Kerfeld, for Houston?”

“No. For the Mets. I can never think of his name.”

“McDowell.”

“No. The other guy.”

“Orosco.”

“Yeah, Morosco. The Mets go ahead four three. Then Houston gets a home run, ties it up four four. In the sixteenth inning the Mets get three runs. They go ahead seven four. Houston gets up. Guy gets on base and the next guy gets a home run. Seven six. And then Kevin Bass strikes out and they won the series.”

“So They won the series.”

“They won the series.”

“How’d the Mets get the three runs?”

“Dykstra. I’m telling you! After Morosco gave up the runs in the sixteenth, Hernandez came out to the mound — I just read this in the paper — and you know what he said to him? ‘If you throw another fastball, I’ll kill you.'”

“I wonder if he would have.”

“I would have,” my father said, laughing, and sounding as though whatever had floored him in the spring was a fluke and he was going to live a thousand years.

Four of the twelve moonwalkers still living, and 13 living among the 24 if you include all the moon orbiters as well as walkers.
Harrison Schmidt, soon to be 83, is the youngest of the surviving baker's dozen. At the other end, Jim Lovell (Apollo 8 & 13) and Frank Borman (8) both turned 90 earlier this year.

The idea that there even might be a time when there would be no living moon men was probably inconceivable to most folks even after the Apollo program was curtailed in December of 1972, two missions earlier than planned.

Gardner is best known as the editor of the Year's Best SF volumes, something he's been doing for over 30 years. But within the field he was incredibly respected as an editor and as a person. If you went to any conventions in the northeast, you'd run into him, having a great time and making generous gestures to any new writers there. He was a bon vivant and always included others in the fun.

He won Hugos and Nebulas (I ran into him when he won a Hugo, calling the design of the award "the toilet-seat Hugo") as an editor and writer and was a giant in the field.

For a long time, the guitar chair was considered something of a curse in Fleetwood Mac, with bad acid trips, alcoholism, heroin addiction, mental illness, a cult, and the usual fidelity betrayals short-circuiting a bunch of promising careers before Lindsay Buckingham arrived. It's hard to think of Lindsay as the embodiment of stability, but he apparently was by the standards of the Mac.

A couple of my quick faves from the Danny Kirwan years. This one is both him and Peter Green in a dueling fashion. It starts out as a pretty typical-for-them late 60's sound reminiscent of what Green did with "Black Magic Woman," in terms of percussion and feel, until the last 90 seconds, where the tempo and feel of this song dramatically shifts. For the better. I love this outro, maybe one of my all time favorite changes in direction mid-song from this era, from any band.

And even though that's partially understandable since it occurred during my recent 'dark' period, by the latter half of this week I was killing time by watching a variety of TV sports shows -- which normally

I closed my Twitter app after seeing someone say that his opinions did great harm to our country.

I’d say that sort of brainless “hot take” should be reserved for those in opinion/infotainment show hosts roles like a Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Rachel Maddow or even a Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert, but even if they gave him the host job on the show he was a panelist on, he wasn’t an over the top troll-like water carrier for his “side” like the names I listed.

But I suppose that’s part of the “sports team/name brand” way of labeling yourself that the discourse has become.

Dan Ingram, one of the all-time radio personalities and an indispensable part of 77 WABC in its powerhouse Musicradio days. I remember on his 20th anniversary show in 1981 he and Howard Cosell reminiscing over their singing "Meet the Mets" in the studio when Howard was preparing to do the new ballclub's pregame show on its first flagship station. Hardly Ingram's biggest legacy, but a link to what we usually talk about here.

Ingram was my favorite WABC DJ by far. (Far better than the execrable Cousin Brucie).

He was responsible for the success of the Youngbloods, by taking their two-year-old song "Get Together" and using for a promo. It turned it into a hit.

Cousin Brucie was the DJ playing music for the folks lounging around the pool at the Nevele (Catskill Resort) when my wife and I went there in 1967. The tennis pro was some guy named Arthur Ashe.

He's purely obnoxious -- everything that's wrong with a top-40 DJ: Loud, unfunny, babbling instead of talking, etc. I couldn't listen to his show for more then ten minutes, and then only if he played "Hey Jude" during that time.

He may be a nice guy in person, but I never could stand his radio show.

Re: Guess Who died in 2018

Apropos not of his on-air career (which continues via SiriusXM) but one isolated Mets-related moment, Howie Rose had Cousin Brucie on Mets Extra as his pregame guest for a midweek day game in 1987. Howie gave him a very warm and generous introduction, noting how much it meant to him as a kid who grew up listening to him play Beatles records to have him on. Bruce wasn't rude by any means, but incredibly full of himself, telling a story about being mobbed while sitting at Shea during Game Seven of the World Series the previous October. "They weren't Mets fans," he told Howie. "They were Cousin Brucie fans."

I'm gonna go out on a limb and guess they were at least as much Mets fans in that context as anything.

Mr. Morrow wrote an interesting memoir in the late '80s, though he didn't include that anecdote.

Harlan Ellison

Harlan was a giant in the field, and one of the greats of the short story. In his prime, he was outstanding. The list of his great stories is very long: "I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream," "A Boy and His Dog," "Jeffty is Five," "'Repent, Harlequin' said the Ticktockman,'" "Crazy as a Soup Sandwich," "Adrift Just Off the Islets of Langerhans," and hundreds more. (He was as well known for his titles as for his stories himself. He won more awards than just about any author in the field.

He also worked in TV. It's no coincidence that some of the best SF shows ever -- The Outer Limits, Star Trek, Babylon 5, The Twilight Zone (1985 version) -- had him involved.

As an anthologies, he edited the two Dangerous Visions anthology.

Harlan was prickly, a lover of the spotlight, and caustic to enemies. But he was also a loyal and generous friend.

And a helluva writer.

Very interesting story of how the Ellison episode evolved into it's final version.
I knew the peripherals but not the juicy stuff. And years after, Roddenberry, Shatner, Nimoy, & Kelly listed it as a top 3 episode of all time. #1 on Roddenberry's and Kelley's list. But what a headache it was to get it to the screen.

There were several spectacular couples but they gave the win to a couple from Anaheim California wearing retro-50's outfits (he had saddle shoes, a plaid sports jacket and a derby) who did the Lindy. They could barely dance without injuring themselves. I was so angry I wrote the station (no reply).

Never liked either show, but my memory of her was when I saw her at Ford's Theater

No, Lincoln wasn't attending. They were doing Ken Ludwig's "Leading Ladies." Rae and John Astin were playing minor parts, probably to draw the crowd. It was the final performance, so everyone was having fun with their roles and playing to the crowd.

What I do remember most was how small she was. Everyone towered over her; it looked like she was no more than 5' tall.

When Chuck Berry died I noted how few remaining performers were left from the inaugural class of the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame (Don Everly, Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis). But the second class is now even less populated with living persons. The remaining living member of the 1987 R&RHOF class is Smokey Robinson.

The deceased:
Eddie Cochran (1960)
Clyde McPhatter (1972)
Bill Haley (1981)
Muddy Waters (1983)
Marvin Gaye (1984)
Jackie Wilson (1984)
Rick Nelson (1985)
Big Joe Turner (1985)
Roy Orbison (1988) - the first to go who was alive at the induction
Cornell Gunter of the Coasters (1990)
Carl Perkins (1998)
Will Jones of the Coasters (2000)
Carl Gardner of the Coasters (2001)
Billy Guy of the Coasters (2002)
Bo Diddley (2008)
BB King (2015)

I'll go further: with regard to her artistic peak (1967-1975), her range (old-school gospel to jazz to "Think" to "Nessun Dorma" on 20 minutes' notice); to her unparalleled ability to retire/claim other great pop singers' songs; to her ability to awe other all-time greats; to her ability to just plain make you hear the glory of God, whether or not you believe... Aretha was maybe the greatest voice America has ever produced.

And, prior to that, Columbia (plus a small label or two before that).
Not only did her career start pre-date Motown but Motown was a top-down-run 'hit factory' full of mostly hungry Detroit area kids who were looking for any way to break into the business and were willing (no choice really) to play for whatever Berry Gordy was going to pay them, often not much. Nothing about that Motown formula with its in-house stable of writers, musicians, and producers was going to be a good match what Aretha already was by the time she was a teenager which made her a much better fit for less pop-oriented and more artist-friendly labels like Columbia and then Atlantic where she could work with the likes of Quincy Jones and Jerry Wexler, or at studios such as Muscle Shoals.

Re: Guess Who died in 2018

Ed King (68) - part of the three guitar sound of Lynyrd Skynyrd and a co-writer of SWEET HOME ALABAMA

Obviously he wasn't one of those killed in the plane crash, mainly because he was no longer in the band by that point. I wouldn't have even known the name when I read this today except that I just saw, as in the last few days, a SHOWTIME documentary on the band, 'IF I LEAVE HERE TOMORROW' which prominently features commentary from King. Weird when a guy you just learn about for the first time on a Tuesday is dead by Thursday.

During his time with Skynyrd he was very much the band outsider. A Californian by birth, he was a member of the psychedelic era band 'The Strawberry Alarm Clock' (Incense and Peppermints). After hearing the Skynyrds at one point early in their run when they were still just a small club-playing band, he liked what they were doing and told them he'd like to join if they needed someone. A few years later they did, and so he did. But the self-proclaimed "California Hippie" never really fit in with the southern boys' rough lifestyle (lots of drinkin' and fightin') and, after clashing with leader Ronnie Van Zant (who liked to get drunk and physically threaten people), he left following LS's third album.
He was replaced on guitar by Steve Gaines, brought on by sister Cassie who was already one of the backing singers. The Gaines siblings, along with RVZ, were the band members among the six dead.
King later briefly returned as part of the post-crash reassembled band but left due to health issues which included a heart transplant.

One of the "Hot spots" on his show was a bar about two miles from my house. Robin had a house on nearby Candlewood Lake and he showed (IIRC) a St. Patrick's Day party there.
It went out of business because his show's trendy followers showed up for a while and the "regulars" got crowded out. When the elite went elsewhere, the regulars never returned.

Well, seeing as the play debuted in 1965, it would be hard to get anything in way before The Odd Couple, although they may have appeared in a comic song or two. Maybe the 19th-Century Mets were referenced, though.

A re-re-thought out decision by Agent Orange concerning the death of McCain

Little Donnie:
“Despite our differences on policy and politics, I respect Senator John McCain’s service to our country" -- no you don't

"and, in his honor, have signed a proclamation to fly the flag of the United States at half-staff until the day of his interment,” -- reversing your earlier decision, one based on purely petty reasons, to do just the opposite

“I have asked Vice President Mike Pence to offer an address at the ceremony honoring Senator McCain at the United States Capitol this Friday,” -- because the McCain family didn't invite your overly large ass

"At the request of the McCain family, I have also authorized military transportation of Senator McCain’s remains from Arizona to Washington, DC, military pallbearers and band support, and a horse and caisson transport during the service at the United States Naval Academy.” -- I'm pretty sure none of that needs your authorization. My uncle, a career naval officer (and, by coincidence, McCain's roommate at USNA) had all of that (minus the transport service from Arizona) at his burial service (Arlington National) and I'm pretty sure my aunt and cousins didn't have to request Presidential permission for it. Not that I'd expect you to have a fucking clue what a career military officer is entitled to.

On his departure from the group [in a 1993 interview]: ... Janis's death struck me. It was dark times. Everybody was doing so much drugs and I couldn’t even talk to the band. I was into yoga at the time. I’d given up drinking and I was into totally different area, health foods and getting back to the streets, working with the American Indians. It was getting strange for me. Cocaine was a big deal in those days and I wasn’t a cokie and I couldn’t talk with everybody who had an answer for every goddamn thing, rationalizing everything that happened. I thought it made the music really tight and constrictive and ruined it. So after Janis died, I thought, I’m not gonna go onstage and play that kind of music; I don’t like cocaine.

The fan predicted that on his deathbed he'd still resent the SOB who dared to gloat over the phone that the Mets were beating the Cardinals on September 11 of that season before the score went final. I loved his resolve as a writer.

"I was so programmed to fail," he says at one point. "I had shown no signs of talent as a young man. I was an editor at the school literary magazine at Oberlin College, and I would anonymously submit my short stories. When the other editors - two brilliant girls - would read them, they would say, 'We can't possibly publish this shit.' And I would agree.

"After that I took a creative-writing course, where I got horrible grades. Do you know what it's like to want to be a writer and get the worst grades in the class? It's terrible."

I also love how in the frame story of the novel of The Princess Bride, which is totally different from the Peter Falk/Fred Savage frame story in the film, Goldman portrayed himself as such an empty Hollywood shnook.

Putting America first, we understand. Thousand points of light, I never quite got that one. What the hell is that? Has anyone ever figured that one out? And it was put out by a Republican, wasn’t it?”

Only president to fistfight Homer Simpson.

Crappy economy and the fury underlying the Rodney King situation cost him. Also made a bad decision on Quayle.

Better than his son, though.

Back in the mid-nineties, I got a clerical temp job at the Thousand Points of Light Foundation. My assignment was to transfer some bigwig's paper rolodex into a digital one.

Man, that rolodex had personal contact information of everyone, left and right, public and private: Bushes, Kennedys, Jesse Jackson, Nancy Reagan, Arnold Schwarzeneggar, Marion Barry.

I wrote down some of the juiciest ones and pocketed them on the way out the door, but felt guilty and threw out the list when I got home. I could have started my own non-profit with that mailing list.

I think today's editorial in the Detroit News is spot on.

Here's part, but I suggest it's worth the full read:

[url]https://www.detroitnews.com/story/opinion/editorials/2018/12/01/editorial-america-loses-its-point-light/2173866002/

Beyond the box score of accomplishments, Bush today is appreciated – and missed – because his confident, dignified, quiet style of leadership stands in such contrast to the coarseness and chaos of our times.

Bush was not a man of bluster or bravado. Nor was he a president who found it necessary to constantly remind the nation of his great deeds. He was of a class that valued humility and honor. He exemplified the spirit of noblesse oblige, the now quaint notion that to whom much is given, much is expected.

He was a consensus builder who, as a Republican, worked in Congress to forge friendships and alliances with Democrats, many of whom became lifelong friends, and were valuable allies in Bush’s later roles. He also was imbued with deep compassion, wistfully envisioning America as a “kinder, gentler nation,” and presenting the country as such on the foreign stage.

He did not pick public fights. He did not humiliate his opponents. He did not whine. He bore the slings and arrows that come with the office with Kiplingesque reserve and resolve.

I had the pleasure of seeing him a couple times -- the first was the first time I was able to shake hands with a sitting president!

MLB connection: When the dying Babe Ruth donated the manuscript for the book and movie made from it, 'THE BABE RUTH STORY'*, to Yale University in the spring of 1948, it was handed over at
a ceremony on the mound at Yale's baseball field. Accepting it was the captain of the Yale baseball team, George Bush.

* why Yale wanted the manuscript from what was supposedly (I never saw it) one of the worst movies ever made is a mystery, but I suppose anything connected with the Babe was considered gold and that he was dying made it even more so.

Re: Guess Who died in 2018

I think Bush's main problem was that he prepared his whole life to lead the United States in during the cold war and as soon as he got in office it essentially disappeared out from under him leaving him
with no particular cause or direction on which to hang his hat. By upbringing and by temperament he had been associated with the more liberal, WASPish -- his father was from Connecticut and named
Prescott for God's sake -- northeastern, so-called 'Rockefeller' republicans for most of his career. But he had to shift gears to get behind Reagan and the then still emerging southern wing of the party
and wound up caught in between the two once the cold war issue was no longer on the front burner.
Plus it's always tough to be somebody else's third term (partly why it rarely happens, right Hill?) so between the bad economy, the distrust from the new right, the shrinking of his old base (eastern Repubs
essentially no longer existed), a desire for a change after 12 years, and a generational shift in voters leaving baby boomers as the biggest bloc, his seemingly solid lead in the middle of his term quickly
melted away. Perot also didn't help him any. But while the '92 election may have been a shade closer with that wing-nut in the race, he wasn't going to have enough anyway.

When people have been interviewed about how they remember him, it seems the most frequent comment was "He was a decent man". And this is in the traditional way of using that word. He had a moral compass to the very end. Even his invasion of Iraq was to free an country from the invasion of a tyrannical regime, not for his self interest.
I did not agree with him on many issues, but the term Compassionate Conservative could not be more apt.

This sort of adds up to Dana Carvey's claim that he was never really doing Bush, but doing a combination of John Wayne and Mr. Rogers.

Cool pics of 41 and 8!

While in Florida last month, I went to the cemetery to help my parents clean the headstone of my grandparents and nephew. Gray Carter rests in the same cemetery, close by, and we paid our respects. He has a large, but tasteful stone with a verse from Joshua -- 24:15, "As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord." There's his full name, with "Husband, father, Pops." There's a smaller stone shaped like home place.

Yes. I didn't take this photo, but I found it online.

Perry Como rests a few steps away. Another Hall-of-Famer, Billy Herman is there. And, I learned while looking for the Gary Carter photo, that Pistons Coach Chuck Daily and entertainer Mike Douglas also are there. Kind of surprising, since it's not a very big cemetery.

Spare a thought for Sondra Locke, Oscar-nominated actress (The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter) who starred opposite then-boyfriend Clint Eastwood in The Outlaw Josey Wales, The Gauntlet, Every Which Way But Loose, Any Which Way You Can, Bronco Billy and Sudden Impact.

Before the two parted (very badly), she would follow her paramour into directing, helming Ratboy, which was exactly as bizarre as it sounds. If you get a chance to jump from acting to directing, well, it might as well be Ratboy.

Re: Guess Who died in 2018

Ms. Marshall directed two iconic movies as well, one of which lives on in the ongoing Tabloid Cover Derby via a tweak of its signature line, "There's no crying in baseball." While not baseball-intensive like A League Of Their Own, she did steer one scene from Big into MFYS II. (Bronx girl, whaddaya can do?)

Penny was also Mary Richards's neighbor Paula for a spell when Mary moved to a new apartment, before Laverne & Shirley transformed her from supporting player to superstar. Agreed to date Lou in one episode so Lou could make an old flame jealous. (The old flame was dating Jeff Conaway, aka future Bobby from Taxi.)

Myrna was one of the greatest shall we say utility characters in sitcom history. Would come off the bench and deliver line drive after line drive. "Look at the time." "Have you tried tennis?" "How do you dooo?"

That "have you tried tennis" line was just great; the set-up, the line itself, her timing, her delivery, all of it.

She is of course survived not just by her ex-husband but also by her ex-father-in-law, the now 96 y/o Carl Reiner.
That he was just 21 years older than his one-time daughter in law was in part due to the Reiner penchant for marrying older women.
Rob Reiner is four years younger than Penny and papa Carl was eight years younger than his (now late) wife.
A minority of men out-live their wives but I guess that: a) marrying someone older then b) living to be 96, significantly increases the odds.
