I know from my travels, that you aren't allowed to pump your own gas in New Jersey. They get all upset if you hop out and start to operate the pump for yourself. I guess by disallowing serf service gas stations, it creates employment opportunities (albeit low level ones).

New Jersey is the remaining holdout now that the other last one (Oregon?) recently changed their laws.
Originally self-service was banned for safety reasons but now, yes, I think localities hang onto it as a way of acting like they're preserving jobs.

My wife [u:216uy6lp]loves[/u:216uy6lp] that she doesn't have to pump her own gas, especially in winter. It's a Jersey thing that is very very popular. I think the article in the Times mentioned it was like 63-23 favorability last time they polled it.

The downside is that when I travel out of state I sometimes find myself sitting there at the pump waiting for an attendant who will never, ever come.

Re: Apropos of Small Things and What Not 2018

The solution, of course, would be to have self-serve AND full-serve islands which is how it was for years in many locales.
But now it seems that stations are opting to offer you vanilla OR chocolate rather than your choice of either.

Are you saying that the population of New Jersey is mentally less capable of figurin out how to pump their own gas than the population of the other 49 states?
It's really not that diffiicult to figure out.

garbage. it's all garbage. many people like the zany blue laws as well, but it's all propaganda and brainwashing. Let us pump our own gas if we want, shop on Sundays if we want. If you don't, then don't. go to the full service place, they'll exist, even if it won't be _as_ common. It's usually fine during commuting hours, but next time I'm sitting there waiting for someone to take a nossal out and literally just turn a screw cap I'm just gonna get out and do it myself. technically I don't think that's even against the law as it's not "pumping" gas and i've already paid.

Re: Apropos of Small Things and What Not 2018

it's so much bs. Mostly it's a game of chicken between the town where all the malls are, Paramus, and the county at large. Paramus publicly states it'll never repeal it's own blue laws, so it's two pronged and no real momentum for change (even from a legal standpoint) because countywide it doesn't matter, and Paramus preaches, heavily, (this is where the propaganda/brainwashing comes in) that it's all about peace and quiet on sundays for people that BOUGHT A HOUSE NEAR A MALL. Even if telling a business (that you're taxing) when they can open and what they can sell were fully legal for a county/town to do (I'd argue it's not.) getting the residents on your side by preaching the peace thing .. Like sure, it's nice to have a lazy sunday and not be able to do anything and no one's going out or driving anywhere, but it's really none of your business if the rest of the town wants to go places. they should have that option.

If that even applied to this bastardized version of it. Like, I can't buy straws at the super market. I can't buy a towel at the gym. Neither of these things contribute to traffic one bit of course, but if the gym can sell a t-shirt, than Macy's can sell a t-shirt. You'd think the huge corporations would pitch a fit about this. What do you mean I can't open my Target location on Sunday? But I guess being in one of the richest suburbs in the nation creates enough revenue anyway, that no one's struggling to make ends meet. Well, except maybe the smaller local businesses, or Jewish ones. But screw them right? Can't have people daring to drive on my street or congesting the roads on sunday, even though it makes Saturday that much worse.

And never mind that this would create millions of jobs and workhours for residents(well more than a theoretical 'you can pump gas' law would potentially) plus the ever increasing loss of sales tax revenue to NY, and the internet because if you know you're not getting out to get what you need on Saturday, just order it on Amazon and it'll be there Monday.

it's the same way with the gas. You can buy t-shirts that say "Jersey girls don't pump gas" it's been marketed as something to be proud of, rather than a government restriction, which is what it is. But then the government doesn't let us turn left in half the state either, so there's that.

edit to add that not only are the blue laws pretty restrictive for a jewish community, many of the same communities are ACTIVELY (like, vandalism active) trying to sabotage eruv in towns that make it easier for some jews to be in the community.

Re: Apropos of Small Things and What Not 2018

I had no idea that there were still blue laws in New Jersey. (Is it the whole state, or just the Paramus area?)

And pumping gas is not at all difficult. Anyone who can figure out how to operate an automobile should be able to easily learn how to operate a gas pump. I don't even know if "full service" is still an option in other states. I remember decades ago, when I still lived on Long Island, there were full-service pumps and self-service pumps, but I don't think that's still the case. I know it's not the case where I live now. I don't think I've seen a full-service pump in Pennsylvania for many years, if ever.

I was in Oregon in 2014, and pulled in to a gas station to fill my tank. I got out of the car and got ready to do what you do to pump gas, and the attendant came running up to stop me. Said that in Oregon you can't pump your own gas, and that they're the only state with that law. (Obviously, he didn't know about New Jersey.) I'm trying to think of other countries I've been to. I know that I pumped my own gas in the U.K., and Iceland, and the European mainland. I'm not sure about South Africa. That might have been full service because everyone there is looking for a tip for everything. I've also been to Japan and Peru, but I didn't have a rental car in either of those countries.

I'm not sure if it is statewide, but I noticed that a lot of the pumps near me have a big button with the handicapped sign on it. Assuming that someone can reach it from inside their car and an attendant comes running out.

Re: Apropos of Small Things and What Not 2018

The way I remember it: NBC was indeed getting out of the radio business right around the time FAN was launching.
So when FAN went looking for a better signal for their new project (remember that they started on 1050, taking over for NYC's only country music station) they bought out NBC's license to operate over 660.
That same move is how they inherited Imus which also gave the rookie station a huge kick-start. Greg Gumbel as the morning man just wasn't getting it done.

Not sure if that's STILL the case -- it doesn't seem to me that NBC's license would be still in effect this many years later -- but I guess that FAN is still on that frequency means they are, in effect, operating via the long-time home of WNBC radio so maybe it's just semantics at this point.

Rick Pitino also have to have the tattoo he got commemorating that title removed?

Re: Apropos of Small Things and What Not 2018

Michigan was the runner up, but being as there is a case for each team Louisville played along the way advancing, there isn't a very good way to unscramble the eggs. I'm sure Wichita State would be a little peeved if the title was awarded to Michigan, and it apparently isn't going to be.

What would be cool would be if they replayed the Louisville games in the bracket. We just pretend that they lost in the first round to #16 seed North Carolina A&T, and have the NC A&T alumni reunite to play Louisville's round two game against alums from #8 seed Colorado State, and so on.

Can that be set up with Out of the Park? Set up eight teams and have them resign all these guys at 45-50 years old (except the Yankees, who would be 55-60), have them work out for two weeks, and then have them play each other with the age-appropriate skills?

Re: Apropos of Small Things and What Not 2018

This may be better in the baseball forum, but anyhow:
We CPF-ers often talk about how good the broadcaster are for the New York teams.
Well, not ALL New York teams.
I just drove home from work. Got in the car about 4:05 and the radio was on the New Jersey Devils game. It was during the intermission between periods 1 and 2.
The second period started.
By then, they had not told us the score.
At about 4:15, Tampa Bay scored and we were told the score was 2-1.
But THEY NEVER TOLD US WHICH FUCKING TEAM WAS WINNING.
They said the score was 2-1 a few more times.
Still had not told us who was winning.
They kept announcing the "action" for about ten more minutes. I was literally screaming at the radio for them to do their job and inform the listeners of the score.
I listened until almost 4:30 (it was 4:28) before they told us Tampa Bay had the 2-1 lead.

We are spoiled. Sometime we really don't appreciate how good the Mets announcers are until we have to listen to an incompetent crew like that. And they are the Devils' crew.

I don't really care about hockey and don't have a rooting interest in any particular team.
The only reason I kept listening was I wanted to see how long they would keep us in suspense, in case we really cared.
I guess it was why we can't take our eyes off a train wreck or a film of a natural disaster. We want to feel better about what we do have.

End of rant.

And that hasn't improved the quality of some broadcasting teams on radio.
They should all learn from one-time announcer Red Barber.
He had a two minute hour glass (minute glass?) in the booth, and which he used to remind himself to give the score every two minutes to his listening audience.

Dandelions have a special place in my heart.

My dad always picked the first dandelion he saw for my mom. Yesterday I saw a little wilted dandelion on her table and knew she picked it in dad’s honor

My other grandpap’s birthday was in April and grandma Y always picked dandelion greens for his birthday meal. That’s what he wanted.

Save the dandelions. They’re not just weeds and they are important for early spring pollinators

I tend to not be as uniform savvy as many of you guys, plus am not much of an NBA guy and when it comes to the Milwaukee Bucks we may have to go back to Lew Alcindor to find a player I can identify.
So, in contrast to the 'Mb Glove' logo used by Milwaukee's Brewers which I knew about all along even as it escaped the notice of many baseball fans (and even players ... Keith!), I just realized this week that
the inner antlers of the Bucks' logo cleverly suggests a basketball ...

There's an "M" at the forehead of the Maverick in the logo. Is that for Maverick or Mark (Cuban)?

Sometimes I have my phone on vibrate in my front pocket. If I get a call with a continuous repeating vibrate, I sometimes find that to be pleasingly stimulating, depending on the angle, of course.

But if I get a text or a reminder, it's just one short, little, buzz, and I briefly feel like I just peed myself.

I have no idea who she is or why she's seemingly the most important person in the country at the moment -- or if she's related to Queen Bee, Aunt Bea, Medicare Plan B, CB radios, D. B. Cooper, Obi Wan
Kenobe, TB shots, the WB network, B. J. Hunnicut, or Johnny B. Goode, (and, no, I'm not asking to be brought up to date) -- but judging by the amount of 'ink' lately, I can draw no other conclusion.

Exactly - the three signs of Steroid use:
1) Sudden improvement in performance - he was a .265 hitter for seven years in Cincy and a .310 hitter for his MFY career.
2) Acne - his skin looks like a topographic map of a lunar landing site
3) Rage - plenty of film and stories about broken dugout water coolers and clubhouse light bulbs.
