Jay Bruce has been (re-)signed for three years and $39 million. Tell us how you feel now to lend credibility to your feelings later.

Like. Particularly the terms.

Hopefully this isn't it, and there's more to come.

Re: Jay Bruce

Considering what the Phils paid for Carlos Santana Jay is a bargain.

I'm unhappy that it could mess up my Zimmo All-Star fantasy but we're better than yesterday. I also think it portends a future move as we still could use a real infielder

Re: Jay Bruce

I'm certainly upset with how it marginalizes Nimmo, but it provides depth at four positions, and considering the attrition of 2017, you've got to understand and accept that. Apart from burying Brandon and forcing Conforto to continue to pretend to play center, it's a hedge against Conforto not recovering, Smith not developing, or Céspedes crashing his Testarossa, any or all of which could happen by opening day.

I clicked "Dislike," but I could be persuaded to shift to neutral. What's wrong with me that my own poll isn't granular enough for me?

Re: Jay Bruce

They still have bigger needs, but they got good value. As long as the bigger needs (pitching, second base, did I mention pitching?) are well addressed in time for the season I'm for it.

Like I said in the other thread, I'll worry about too much depth on the active roster when it actually happens. As it stands, the Mets can contend with the outfield they have.

Yeah, that's where I am. I'd rather have Jay Bruce than Nori Aoki, but not as much as JD Martinez.

I fear that before the three years are up, he'll go back to being the guy that they wish they could trade.

Re: Jay Bruce

Too early to vote much higher than indifferent without knowing
what comes or doesn't come next. Like I said in the other thread,
and I haven't read anything today more about contract, it's quite
possible the Mets could be saddled with a a $20+ mil paycheck
in 2020 for someone who isn't playing. Again.

Lending credibility is a bit much, no? I post crap at 11pm and change
my mind at 8am the following morning but it's still creditable. It's more
creditable that some guy/gal getting paid $80K citing unnamed sources
and spouting opinion-as-fact to the tri-state area under the guise of an
expert journalist or reporter because they have a press pass.

Ditto. Right field wasn't the most pressing need. But it's a pretty team-friendly contract.

Re: Jay Bruce

Indifferent. In a vacuum, Jay Bruce is fine, should be a decent value even if he doesn't replicate his good 2017 season, and he makes them team a better than a Jay Bruce-less Mets team.

Big picture, I think we could've gotten a better fit somewhere, maybe a right-handed slugger OF/1B, maybe a real CF allowing us to put Conforto in RF, or an outlandish trade for a slugging infielder. I hope, but am doubtful, that more "big" moves are to follow. In the near-term dystopian future where the Mets have a DH position, I would have clicked "like".

Agree with this, but I went with dislike. I would have picked slightly dislike if that were an option.

this. If this contract doesn't prevent Sandy from making other necessary moves, than ok i guess. but i have a feeling it may.

Ditto.

I like it because I feel 3/39 is a good value for a player of Bruce's caliber in the FA market and he provides us a fair upgrade somewhere, even if we don't exactly at whose expense the PAs will come yet.

I like Nimmo too, as Edgy mentions, but for Nimmo to noy play often would mean a healthy Conforto and Cespedes, a performing Bruce, and a performing Smith. And Nikki can still face the lefties if any of the lefties above are showing again that they can't. That's a nice problem to have.

I didn't want jd Martinez's awful defense on a long term deal. The only superior option to me was Cain.

Yes, there are players I would rather have at 2b/3b/pitcher but this move doesn't in any way change those roster spots and I don't want to judge it based on Wilpons perceived budget.
If the Mets "can't afford" Neil Walker or Alex Cobb because of this deal then I say "fuck Wilpon" not "fuck this deal"

I'm curious as to whether this has happened before: a team dumps an upcoming free agent for prospects and then re-signs him during the off-season.

I like it. Contract terms are fine. I have no faith in Nimmo suddenly finding a power stroke. One might think that 35 HR, 100 RBI guys are a dime a dozen until you remember that the last time the Mets had one of those was David Wright in 2010.

Re: Jay Bruce

I don't think anyone thinks Zimmo is going to develop real power. But there ought to be a place for a guy who gets on base a lot and hits a ton of doubles, which he can do.

I suspect Bruce is here to play first base, but I also thought that should have been the case when they first acquired him from the Reds.

RBI are a team stat. The best way to get a guy with 100 RBI is to find a good hitter and put someone like Nimmo in front of him.

counting stats.

Duda hit 30, then 27. 20 last year combined.

Cespedes hit 31 in 2016.

Literally 37 players hit 30 home runs last year. 89 hit 20. guys like Nomar Mazara and Tim Beckham and Tommy Pham.

And I was closer than....well, a closer friend with you than any other board member. I enjoyed all our communications, whether out here or thu PMs.
I enjoyed all your Metly contributions and even your sometimes piss poor attitude.

I even had to ask someone how to do it. And I'm not going to ask anyone how you unblock someone.

So, bye bye.
