Travis Shaw

Shaw could be on the move if the Brew Crew sign Moustakas. . .

Can Wheeler and Lagares get this done?

There is really not much of a need for Lagares and (as evidenced below) I think that they can get away with moving Wheeler.

2018 rotation without Wheeler:
Syndergaard
deGrom
Harvey
Matz
Lugo/Gsellman/Montero

Re: Travis Shaw

I wouldn't count on Harvey - worst pitcher season in Mets history last year.

Given the Mets health issues, I would say Wheeler is pretty unavailable.

Wheeler! You want me to bust a vein over here?

Re: Travis Shaw

I git Wheeler above Matz, in my little book that probably makes no sense.

Re: Travis Shaw

Yeah. Right now Wheeler is my 3rd starter, Katz is 4th, Gsellman, Harvey, Montero, Lugo are fighting for #5/bullpen.

AND? are you drunk?

Maybe Lagares straight up, but I don't trade a starter than a reliever. Wheeler in the pen is more valuable than Shaw as it is.

Re: Travis Shaw

I don't get this at all from the Brewers perspective. Why sign somebody likely worse than Shaw at free agent $$ when you have Shaw at cost control. And then deal him for two question marks coming off DL-laden seasons?

What's the deal? Isn't Shaw the sort of guy they should be building around? Spending their Mousakas money on a pitcher and an outfielder that brings a little more guaranteed than Wheeler and Lagares?

Beyond that ... regarding that last post above mine ... please explain.

Wheeler in the pen is more valuable than Shaw? Shaw got four WAR last season from baseball-reference, and a more conservative 3.4 from fangraphs. Wheeler — who has never particularly pitched out the pen, coming off two full missed seasons from Tommy John surgery followed by less than a half season, having his effort cut short by recurring tendonitis and a "stress reaction" — is somehow automatically more valuable if given a relief role? And this is so obvious as to categorize detractors as "drunk"?

I'm not seeing it.

Re: Travis Shaw

oops, I got him conflated with the meh Indians reliever some Mets folk were drooling over earlier.

Travis is seemingly legit and I don't buy that the Brewers are moving him. Wheeler and Lagares doesn't get it done either, Comforto and Smith maybe.

This.

And this.

I vastly would prefer Shaw to Mousakas at their relative costs. I'm not sure what the Brewers are thinking.

Re: Travis Shaw

As it's a rumor, I won't assume the Brewers are thinking anything. But yeah, there's no good reason to push Shaw out in favor of Moustakas. His offensive value is comparable and his defensive value is superior.

Re: Travis Shaw

Shaw has some experience at 1B; they could push out Thames instead. (And get basically a win or two of corner-infield defensive improvement for whatever Moustakas costs.)
