David Wright 2018

Figured David would be a subject of much discussion so here's to a sugary new year thread.

Benjamin Grimm Jan 25 2018 07:37 PM Re: David Wright 2018 |
Discussions of David Wright are more likely to be "surgery" than "sugary", I'm afraid.

Lefty Specialist Jan 25 2018 07:43 PM Re: David Wright 2018 |
I would imagine that Wright will give it a go in spring training, find out fairly early that it's not going to work, and hold a teary press conference announcing his retirement.

Ceetar Jan 25 2018 07:52 PM Re: David Wright 2018 |
David Wright's going to appear in 65 games this year. It's just what it is. The surgery he had was designed for short term relief of his condition. Whether the stenosis caused the shoulder/throwing problems from early last year or not, I have a belief that a full year off from the second surgery on the shoulder probably has his body in working order again. Likely the stenosis keeps him limited, and perhaps even causes more injuries, but I think he'll be around some.

...and then the Wilpons cut payroll because insurance didn't pay his salary this year.
|
Ceetar Jan 25 2018 09:17 PM Re: David Wright 2018 |

well, they still get 75% of his salary back for the ~80 games he's on the DL for.

Ashie62 Jan 25 2018 11:38 PM Re: David Wright 2018 |
My fear is that David cannot play yet does not retire.
|
Centerfield Jan 25 2018 11:59 PM Re: David Wright 2018 |
I think we will see David on the field at some point this year. I think it will be largely unsuccessful and this will be his final year.
|
Rockin' Doc Jan 26 2018 12:36 AM Re: David Wright 2018 |
I don't expect to see David Wright playing in a regular season game. I think he will try to give it a go in spring training and find that his body can no longer up to the rigors of MLB. Whether he retires, or continues to rehab in hopes of someday being able to play at the MLB level once again is the only part I feel uncertain of. I suspect that David's desire to play will not allow him to give up his dream of a return to the Mets.

I can go for that, yes can do.

This would be nice. If David plays an inning does that mess up the insurance? He could just line up between innings I guess.
|
Benjamin Grimm Jan 26 2018 03:05 AM Re: David Wright 2018 |
I believe it would. As I understand it, insurance only kicks in after he's out for 60 consecutive days. So if he plays one inning that inning would cost the Mets twi months of his salary. That would be a very expensive inning.
|
Ceetar Jan 26 2018 12:25 PM Re: David Wright 2018 |
|
as long as he's hit the 60 days the inning merely costs them 1/180 of his salary. Unless it's game 60. but if he's not ready to go Opening Day and not playing in minor league games, he's practically guaranteed to be out until June.
|
Benjamin Grimm Jan 26 2018 12:32 PM Re: David Wright 2018 |
But if he plays one inning on June 1 and doesn't play again, then wouldn't the Mets have to pay him his full salary for the 60 days beginning June?
|
Ceetar Jan 26 2018 02:27 PM Re: David Wright 2018 |
as long as he has 60 total days on the DL they get 75% of his salary for every day he's on the DL.

So we'll know on the 14th if we can expect to see him any time soon or not. That's fine.
|
MFS62 Feb 03 2018 10:40 PM Re: David Wright 2018 |

60 total days? I thought it must be 60 consecutive days. Big difference. IMO it would cause a lot of negotiatus interruptus in the determination in any year's insurance payoff if they had to wait to string DL stints to get to the 60 total. When/ where did you read that? Later

Seems to me that we may know as early as Feb 14th. That's the first day the team can assign someone to the 60 Day DL list, but it's certainly conceivable that no decision will be reached by that date.

Zvon Feb 03 2018 11:09 PM Re: David Wright 2018 |
We already know our owners.
|
Nymr83 Feb 04 2018 12:33 AM Re: David Wright 2018 |
If the Mets knew they had a roater spot coming on the 14th, why not hold off making the Reyes deal off until then? I doubt he was in such high demand that they couldn't make him wait.
|
Benjamin Grimm Feb 04 2018 12:48 AM Re: David Wright 2018 |
I guess they probably didn't value Josh Smoker all that much.
|
Nymr83 Feb 04 2018 01:39 AM Re: David Wright 2018 |
You can have a deal without signing papers and submitting them to the league yet - though I think the vhances of such a deal not leaking are pretty low
|
Ceetar Feb 04 2018 03:24 AM Re: David Wright 2018 |
T.J. Rivera will open on the 60 day. And I'm not sure the Mets are super worried about losing Matt Reynolds, a 27 year old infielder. There's your starter and your Frazier/Walker guy.
|
seawolf17 Feb 04 2018 03:45 AM Re: David Wright 2018 |

Yeah, I was surprised that Reynolds wasn't the guy to go for Reyes.
|
Benjamin Grimm Feb 04 2018 11:43 AM Re: David Wright 2018 |
Conforto can also go on the 60-day on February 14, which means three roster spots opening up. I imagine other teams are in a similar situation, so maybe that's when the free agent logjam will begin to loosen up.

Back to David trying to come back.
|
Edgy MD Feb 04 2018 02:22 PM Re: David Wright 2018 |
I don't think Eddie Edwards is analogous to David Wright. Wright has long been good at what he does, rather than farcically out of his depth, and he works on the ground.
|
Ashie62 Feb 05 2018 02:41 PM Re: David Wright 2018 |
Davidoff reporting today that the Mets may place Wright on the 60 day DL as early as 2/14/18.

Edgy MD Feb 09 2018 01:32 AM Re: David Wright 2018 |
Just realizing that the team hasn't announced a coaching staff yet for Kingsport.

A Boy Named Seo Feb 17 2018 04:25 PM Re: David Wright 2018 |
Certain the facebook comments are exactly what I'd expect them to be. Poor Dave. He's just quietly trying to get better. As always, he's brought no negative attention to himself or the team. And every last one of those turds talking shit on him would collect that paycheck (that AIG or whoever is paying the majority of), same as he's doing.

the downward spiral, if it exists, was always there. Social media just makes it louder.
