David Wright 2018

Figured David would be a subject of much discussion so here's to a sugary new year thread.

I still think of David as "Captain America" and a guy who bleeds blue.

These are trying times for you David Wright.

These are trying times for Met's fans; not by anytime unusual for many Mets fans this time of year.

I guess Asdrubal Cabrera is the 3B today.

Re: David Wright 2018

Discussions of David Wright are more likely to be "surgery" than "sugary", I'm afraid.

Re: David Wright 2018

I would imagine that Wright will give it a go in spring training, find out fairly early that it's not going to work, and hold a teary press conference announcing his retirement.

I take no joy in that prediction.

Re: David Wright 2018

David Wright's going to appear in 65 games this year. It's just what it is. The surgery he had was designed for short term relief of his condition. Whether the stenosis caused the shoulder/throwing problems from early last year or not, I have a belief that a full year off from the second surgery on the shoulder probably has his body in working order again. Likely the stenosis keeps him limited, and perhaps even causes more injuries, but I think he'll be around some.

'ideally' he gets 40 games in April and May, has nagging stuff, is shut down all summer, and returns for September and October.

well, they still get 75% of his salary back for the ~80 games he's on the DL for.

Re: David Wright 2018

My fear is that David cannot play yet does not retire.

Why would he give up money on a contract due to injury?

I don't understand the money and math involved here; should it "drag on" without resolution I would not like to see David viewed as a "pariah".

Re: David Wright 2018

I think we will see David on the field at some point this year. I think it will be largely unsuccessful and this will be his final year.

Last game of the season, long having clinched the NL East crown, Reyes and Wright will line up at 3B and SS and get huge cheers from the Citi faithful.

Maybe we can get Johan to close the game.

Re: David Wright 2018

I don't expect to see David Wright playing in a regular season game. I think he will try to give it a go in spring training and find that his body can no longer up to the rigors of MLB. Whether he retires, or continues to rehab in hopes of someday being able to play at the MLB level once again is the only part I feel uncertain of. I suspect that David's desire to play will not allow him to give up his dream of a return to the Mets.

I can go for that, yes can do.

This would be nice. If David plays an inning does that mess up the insurance?

He could just line up between innings I guess.

Re: David Wright 2018

I believe it would. As I understand it, insurance only kicks in after he's out for 60 consecutive days. So if he plays one inning that inning would cost the Mets twi months of his salary. That would be a very expensive inning.

as long as he's hit the 60 days the inning merely costs them 1/180 of his salary. Unless it's game 60. but if he's not ready to go Opening Day and not playing in minor league games, he's practically guaranteed to be out until June.

Re: David Wright 2018

But if he plays one inning on June 1 and doesn't play again, then wouldn't the Mets have to pay him his full salary for the 60 days beginning June?

Insurance wouldn't cover his full salary for the entire season if he misses two months and then plays every day for the next four.

Re: David Wright 2018

as long as he has 60 total days on the DL they get 75% of his salary for every day he's on the DL.

Re: David Wright 2018

This is interesting:

As early as February 14, the Mets can place Wright on the 60-day disabled list, which doesn’t count against the team’s 40-man roster. That could be especially crucial this year in light of the extremely slow-moving free-agent market — and the industry-wide roster churn once guys finally start signing — off which the Mets want to capitalize. The Mets chose to trade Smoker, the big, hard-throwing lefty with mediocre results, because they had to make room on their 40-man roster for the re-signing of Jose Reyes. Wright has been occupying one of those cherished roster spots.

The roster spot won’t become an issue again until November, when teams must finalize their 40-man rosters in anticipation of the Rule 5 draft. That serves as a de facto deadline for Wright and the Mets to figure out their future.

So we'll know on the 14th if we can expect to see him any time soon or not. That's fine.

60 total days?
I thought it must be 60 consecutive days. Big difference.
IMO it would cause a lot of negotiatus interruptus in the determination in any year's insurance payoff if they had to wait to string DL stints to get to the 60 total.
When/ where did you read that?

Seems to me that we may know as early as Feb 14th.
That's the first day the team can assign someone to the 60 Day DL list, but it's certainly conceivable that no decision will be reached by that date.

We already know our owners.
We don't know what kind of manager Callaway will be. A players guy, a puppet? It'll be interesting to see how he handles this.

Re: David Wright 2018

If the Mets knew they had a roater spot coming on the 14th, why not hold off making the Reyes deal off until then? I doubt he was in such high demand that they couldn't make him wait.

Re: David Wright 2018

I guess they probably didn't value Josh Smoker all that much.

I do wonder if they're waiting until February 14 to sign that starting pitcher we've been hoping for. It's a bit of a risk, since there's no guarantee that Cobb and/or Lynn will still be available by then.

Re: David Wright 2018

You can have a deal without signing papers and submitting them to the league yet - though I think the vhances of such a deal not leaking are pretty low

Re: David Wright 2018

T.J. Rivera will open on the 60 day. And I'm not sure the Mets are super worried about losing Matt Reynolds, a 27 year old infielder. There's your starter and your Frazier/Walker guy.

Yeah, I was surprised that Reynolds wasn't the guy to go for Reyes.

Re: David Wright 2018

Conforto can also go on the 60-day on February 14, which means three roster spots opening up. I imagine other teams are in a similar situation, so maybe that's when the free agent logjam will begin to loosen up.

Back to David trying to come back.
To me, he's in the same situation as "Eddie the Eagle", the inexperienced Englishman who wanted to compete in the ski jump at the Winter Olympics.
We admire his dedication, but we're hoping he won't get seriously or permanently injured, and wish he'd reconsider.

Re: David Wright 2018

I don't think Eddie Edwards is analogous to David Wright. Wright has long been good at what he does, rather than farcically out of his depth, and he works on the ground.

Wright is certainly well aware of his situation as are the doctors advising him, far more than we are. Yeah, he can get hurt. They all can.

David has not resumed baseball activities and retirement has not been planned.

Certain the facebook comments are exactly what I'd expect them to be. Poor Dave. He's just quietly trying to get better. As always, he's brought no negative attention to himself or the team. And every last one of those turds talking shit on him would collect that paycheck (that AIG or whoever is paying the majority of), same as he's doing.

the downward spiral, if it exists, was always there. Social media just makes it louder.
