Return of bullpen carts?

Cool feature of speed-up-the-game negotiations between MLB and players: The return of bullpen carts! Union has asked MLB to consider them, and MLB is considering it, where possible, as early as 2018 season.

Heck yeah!

Would it really save any significant amount of time? Bullpen carts are fun, but even when I was little, I thought it was silly that a professional athlete would need a ride from the outfield to the pitcher's mound. Shouldn't the outfielders also get an Uber at the end of each inning? Especially a left fielder who has to go to the first base dugout, or a right fielder going to third base.

Re: Return of bullpen carts?

I'm sure Jeff would screw this up by plastering a sponsor's name all over the cart, but for nostalgia's sake I'd be happy to see the return of the bullpen ride.

I'd be shocked if any team didn't sponsor the carts. Yankees will have two sponsors.

Yeah you're right. They'd look like race cars with all the ads. Maybe not so great, after all.

If not for bullpen carts, Jake Taylor would never have tracked down Lynn.

Agreed. A Met cap golf cart with say, a Wise Chips logo somewhere on the back is much more appealing than a Wise Chips cart with a Met logo stuck on somewhere.

That was my thought. Is a player getting into the cart, then the cart riding around the warning track, then the pitcher getting out of the cart and walking to the mound any faster than a pitcher walking directly to the mound?
As the football coach said when asked if he had a good time on his honeymoon, I'd have to see the film.

Re: Return of bullpen carts?

I don't know. If I were a reliever, I'd wave off the cart and jog in from the bullpen. I would think that a grown man would be embarrassed to need a ride in a silly buggy for a trip that's about 300 feet in distance.

Re: Return of bullpen carts?

While I agree that it's a nice memory from my youth, I'm afraid it's just another
gimmick in a present-day ballpark full of gimmicks. Who needs a billboard on wheels
when everywhere you look there's a giant ad for something. And the larger than life
ads just piss me off even more when they don't/can't spend all that advertising re-
venue. And on the tv side, 'this ride from the bullpen brought to you by Enterprise'
is gonna be in addition to the stupid call to it from AT&T. Ugggo.

(sorry between the wind chills and that stupid fraidy-cat groundhog I'm a tad grumpy for a sunny Friday)

But it's "old-timey" to the era of concrete doughnuts and astroturf.

I think I'm a few years younger than most of you so I have no nostalgia for the bullpen cart and don't really see what good purpose they have for in-game use. Maybe one would be fun to have around for driving around VIPs who have trouble walking to pregame ceremonies though.

The reliever with the most recent blown save has to provide the muscle.

Yeah they would HAVE to make it acceptable and not with a bunch of advertising all over it. I don't mind the signs on the walls, that is traditional, but those carts were just so cool.

Thinking of Tug McGraw riding cool-y in. For some reason I can even picture Seaver in one

I don't get anyone who wouldn't want one of these rolling thru Citi. I don't care what the reason is for bringing them back.
They better do it right though.

If the Wilpons need money to do this the right way I suggest we give them cart blanche.

If it's one sponser, I'll let it slide as long as they don't put a garish marking on the cart. Any more than one ad and I'll be averting my eyes whenever the cart appears.

Great job on that cart^! :)

Man, the Dbags never had bullpen carts to begin with. DWG seems like he was right... 3 adverts on the cart and the giant one on the side of the cap is prob a sneak peak into a shittier future for all teams.

I think this will happen more often than not. Less due to embarrassment, but more because a dude wants to get the heart rate up a little with a jog or a sprint before entering the game.

They tended to take the ride to the dugout, and then took a vigorous trot from there to the mound to get the juices flowing.

Re: Return of bullpen carts?

might as well go full kitchy if you're going to do it.

Have a promotion where a fan races the cart.

deck the car out with fireworks, and glitzy LED screens.

Have it self driving.

Or have it fake-remote controlled and show Mr. Met on the jumbo 'driving' the cart to the mound.

might as well go full advertising. besides the obvious 'self driving car by Tesla' advertising. Have a pokemon sit in the drivers seat. Give the cart airplane wings and have a monster on the wing.

If you're bringing in a reliever that used to be on the other team swing by their dugout as a joke.

Have the car fake break down, billow blue and orange smoke, and make the reliever walk the last twenty feet.

Re: Return of bullpen carts?

I'm imagining how anticlimactic it would have been if Trevor Hoffman would have walked out of the bullpen in San Diego in a tense 9th inning, "Hell's Bells" blaring, fans losing their shit, then he climbs into a little golf cart covered in ads for Sea World, life insurance and Karl Strauss beer, and slowly rolls to the mound.

Edgy MD
Mar 07 2018 03:43 PM
Re: Return of bullpen carts?

Yeah, but if peoples can get, like, 12% creative, he can climb into a cart worthy of the here-comes-a-badass "Hell's Bells" factor.

The real problem with cultural changes in the league is not that they get sponsored. At least not necessarily. It's that the whole league copycats each other. Or agrees to add something collectively at the same time. Put a few hours into brainstorming an original thought, and this could be a lot of fun. Try a flanking maneuver! Veeck the whole thing up! You're supposed to be competitors, for Pete's sake!

That's fine by me.

Do they really have a professional marketing staff sit down and shoot ideas to come up with what they do?

[list:2b84ftzo]"We can be the 17th team to add a costumed character race."[/list:u:2b84ftzo]

[list:2b84ftzo]"I'd like to note that Orin also is the one who suggested we play 'Sweet Caroline' during the seventh-inning stretch."[/list:u:2b84ftzo]
