Scanning with iPhone

I love how on tv peeps just hold their phone up and it works. Ha. Not one bit interested in paying for my hoagie with my phone but... However I got my husband a Cornell bird songs of the day calendar with symbols to scan and hear but all I can figure out is that I am supposed to hold my camera in front of the symbol. Nothing happens. What am I doing wrong? Thanks for any input

'barcode scanner' and it'll load a url probably. surprised there's not a url with a type in code for a website there somewhere?
