'Best Shape of His Life' - Dom Smith edition

Actually he's merely quoted as saying he feels "more athletic" than at any other time - but that's close enough.
The Post's Ken Davidoff joins Smith for a workout and reports on the results. And, no, it's not with Barwis.
“I feel more athletic than I’ve ever been" ... “In spring training, I’ve always looked the part, but as far as my mobility and loosening up some hips and being more flexible, more agile as an athlete, I feel like this is the most advanced I’ve been for sure in my career.” ... “I feel the difference. “I feel like my whole posture is better. The way I walk around is better. My body doesn’t hurt. I just feel more like an athlete. And that’s something that I didn’t have in the past.”

The numbers reported (which I'm always skeptical of taking as gospel truth) are that Smith is currently at 224
Last year he was said to have reported to spring at 236, down from his previous year's 254, but had gained most or all of that difference back by later in the year.

I'm glad he's working hard and hope he's not too discouraged by the Adrian Gonzalez thing. Perhaps I should hold my predictions until "Expectations of Eighteen" comes around, but my hunch is that he'll spend more time in [crossout:xdg694jx]Tidewater[/crossout:xdg694jx] Las Vegas than in Queens this year.

You get the feeling that this is going to be an ongoing thing for Dom. If he can't keep his weight down at 22, the long-term prognosis is cloudy. With a chance of Meatballs.

I wish we could pretend like Adrian Gonzalez never happened and sign Lucas Duda to a one year deal.

Re: 'Best Shape of His Life' - Dom Smith edition

I disagree. If we signed Lucas Duda he would be getting a normal salary from us and we would play him, effectively blocking Dom Smith. Since we are paying Adrian league minimum we could always drop him if Dom Smith becomes the Dom Smith we want him to be. Enough with the recidivism!

This. A-Gon's pittance of a salary removes the financial consideration from the table, always a big factor when deciding personnel moves with this team.

not just THIS team - there are a few franchises who will walk away from a guy they signed to a big deal, but I think you'd be hard pressed to find many examples of teams that walk away from from big money in the first year of the deal - any team that gives Duda 9 million dollars (or, say the Frazier contract) is playing him Year 1 with no question asked bout who is getting blocked.

Re: 'Best Shape of His Life' - Dom Smith edition

Obviously I'm motivated in part by sentiment on the Lucas Duda comment. It's tough to hear that he is in Port St. Lucie but can't play with the others. Just not right.

But trying to look objectively. If Frazier had to take $17 million over 2, it's not hard to think Duda can be had for a 1 year deal for $5-7 million. The team should be able to absorb a number like that. Duda is a good bet to post an .800+ OPS. It's hard to imagine Gonzalez or Smith approaching that this year.

As for blocking Smith, if Duda is producing, there's no harm there. If he's not, I don't think the Mets, or any club, would let a one year commitment, at that number, stand in the way if Smith is ready.

Yeah if Duda is really available for 1 year at 5-7 million id kick gonzo to the curb and sign duda. I dont think that is the case.

Re: 'Best Shape of His Life' - Dom Smith edition

I got no problem imagining Gonzalez and Smith approaching (or exceeding!) an .800 OPS.

If 2018 is anything like 2017, homers are out there waiting to be hit, even for the old and the young.

Smith had a higher OPS than Gonzalez last year and had a criminally low .218 BABIP. I'm still very bullish on him and I think he should, and will, play.

Re: 'Best Shape of His Life' - Dom Smith edition

I would wager that the lefthanded portion of the Mets first base (Smith or Gonzalez or a combo) will outperform Lucas Duda wherever he might end up (I'm thinking he re-signs with the Rays but I have no real basis for saying that).

Re: 'Best Shape of His Life' - Dom Smith edition

Yeah, looking at the Duda's last three partial seasons shows a 714 OPS for his partial (172 PAs) 2016 campaign, and an almost-as-bad 729 during his 200 PA post-trade stint with the TBR, which tends
to make the 879 (291 PA) he put up in the front half of his 2017 look like maybe it'll be the outlier going forward. And that's before we even get into the platoon splits.
In any case, it's not like the just turned 32 y/o (last weekend) Duda is anymore a slam dunk to exceed an 800 OPS either.

I think this is clearly a case of allowing AGon the opportunity to show he's got something left which, if so, gives Dom another half-season in AAA.
And if Gonzo looks like he's ready for the glue factory then I like a Smith/Flores combo at 1B a lot better than Smith/Duda and at least as much as Flores/Duda

Well that's one way to say it. Another way to say it would be that Lucas Duda has had an OPS of 800+ for three of his last four seasons, the one season being the injury plagued 2016. During those three seasons, he hit 30, 27 and 30 HR's. Career .796 OPS.

I have absolutely no reservations taking a 32 year old on a 1 year deal.

Put it this way. If the fate of the world relied upon the Mets winning it all in 2018, and the money was the same all around, no one would pick Gonzalez or Smith over Duda.

Seen enough of this with the NY Giants offensive line. Let's see how you perform on the field.

Re: 'Best Shape of His Life' - Dom Smith edition

How does the best shape of Dom Smith's life compare to the best shape of other starting major league first basemen?
Or do we even care, if he plays the position very well, while having a small gut hanging over his belt?

Re: 'Best Shape of His Life' - Dom Smith edition

Saw today Dominic Smith has lost 30 pounds going into spring training.

Hopefully lost from all the right places. Looking forward to a photo.

Saw earlier Duda 1 yr 5-7 million?

More like 1 year 2 million.

Smith and Gonzalez will do just fine.

I'm a little concerned that now his stomach goes out and then in and then out & in again.

There's a better pic of his better shape on fb, if I come across it again I'll share.

What position does the guy behind him play?

Is that Eric Langill?

What makes you think Reyes is going to play 2b over Cabrera?

The inevitable knee injury Cabrera sustains in Spring Training.

He's definitely demonstrated that. One of the most impressive things about 2016 was discovering what a warrior Asdrubal Cabrera is.
