Something humans do that no other species does - kill shit for fun. Of course Harvey's in the middle of this. Nice "optics", Callaway & the Mets. For fucks sake...

One thing that comes up regularly among the #RealNews accounts of the president's illicit relationships is his numbskull hatred for sharks.

Re: That's Some Team-Building Exercise

There's some implication in that article that Trump insinuated himself into the group.

This is sure going to place Phil Evans on the hot seat.

Re: That's Some Team-Building Exercise

According to Anthony DiComo, this came about because Brandon Nimmo caught a "huge sailfish" two miles off the Florida coast. Callaway got jealous and organized the shark hunt.

Phil Evans says Trump happened to be fishing on the same beach.

Re: That's Some Team-Building Exercise

A little less to this than it appears. Jr. didn't go fishing with them and tried hanging out with them when they came back, like a lot of rich jock-sniffers tend to do. Trump had been fishing with the same captain earlier in the day and crossed paths when he was getting off and they were getting on. He apparently lay in wait for them to come back. It's a little pathetic, actually.

Trump being part of it would make it more nauseating for me personally, but it still pisses me off these guys went out and killed a couple sharks as some bro down exercise. Saw a vid on Nimmo's insta where is was so excited they got 2 at the same time. I eat meat and all that, but these aren't hungry lions killing a gazelle, has nothing to do with the food chain. These are young, rich assholes killing animals cause they think it's cool and shit.

Re: That's Some Team-Building Exercise

Well, fishing is what it is. It's generally just an excuse for a bunch of guys to get drunk together, which was the 'team-building' part of things. Trump Jr. was just a minor annoyance.

Re: That's Some Team-Building Exercise

My son will have a damn fit if he sees this. He is an avid hunter and fisherman, but as he often says, "I will not kill any animal that I do not intend to eat". He has caught numerous sharks in the past few years, but he always releases them after recording their vital statistics (length, sex, species of shark, approximate age, etc).

To catch the shark or shoot any animal for a "trophy" is just stupid and wrong in my view.

I’m less angry now that I hear that he was a tag along rather than being invited.

But these assholes have to know what that family stands for and how this is not just “politics”. No first family has ever outwardly promotes bigotry and hate as them. If they don’t realize how that picture would be received, this is the definition of white privilege.

As for Mickey, I can do without the brush off he gave this topic. He should go talk to his first baseman and find see if he thinks this is no big deal.

He can talk all the bullshit he wants about how he’ll manage the pen. This was his first test and he failed it miserably.

I agree. Very disappointing.

I saw somewhere that two Mets players said that they were glad that they skipped the shark-hunting trip because they wouldn't have wanted to associate with Trump Jr. Six honorary Schaefer points to those two players, whoever they are.

If I was in that situation (and I wouldn't be, because I wouldn't hunt sharks) I wonder what I would have done? Would I have been polite to Uday Trump, or rude? I think I would have at least said, "Sorry Uday, but I don't want to be photographed with you."

Let's not gloss over the shark hunting itself. which is actually worse than even hanging with that idiot. Just having the same hobbies/guide in common is disappointing.

Re: That's Some Team-Building Exercise

Being pissed off that pro-athletes who work for a team you like spent their own time with the-president-who-you-don't-like's son seems incredibly silly to me.

Being pissed that they went shark-hunting, no matter who was or wasn't there, seems a lot more reasonable/meaningful.

Let's be fair. It's not that he's the son of a president I don't like. I don't like him either, on his own merits. With good reason.

That said, jerks have been stealing credibility by sticking their heads in photos for a long time.

Oh, bull. Don't you guys remember the damage that sharks did to Citi Field?

[youtube:oscidnfh]0F8eK_lcKYo[/youtube:oscidnfh]

I give Mickey credit for sending a message, loud and clear. Look, sharks. You mess with our ballpark, and we're coming after you. And we've even got help from the White House and its big button.

It's about time someone on this team got tough with these monsters of the deep. And the air.

Huh.

In every way. Just... extraordinarily dumb. And, like, Harvey of all people should know better.

Re: That's Some Team-Building Exercise

Zimmo, apparently still sporting a raging boner over shark fishing, posted another pic on instagram today, this time featuring he and his lovely bride giving the ol' thumbs up as they hover over a shark he caught.

The caption on this probably read something like, "Praise ye, baby Jesus, for giving us these beautiful creatures we can yank out of their environment because, golly-gee, it sure is fun."

He then linked to the page of the company who took the team out, hyping a video they made of the team outing. When you get to their page, you're greeting by a pic featuring Harvey, who of of course looks like a huge dildo, along with Mickey and the dude who runs the fishing company.

The caption for this one actually reads:

blacktiph Double header blacktips with @Mets pitcher Matt Harvey and manager Mickey Callaway. The bite was insane, we hooked a blacktip shark every five minutes!! All sharks were released. Video goes live tonight! #blacktiph #fishing #shark #mets #mlb #baseball #sharkfishing #beach #florida #doubleheader #landbased #catchandrelease #froggtoggs #ceuticore #finandfield

I still might not choose shark fishing as my first entertainment option, but as a pretty harsh critic of this shit, I was glad to read they released all the sharks anyway.

Here's the vid, which includes an awkward few moments where Td'A, Harvey, and Plawecki all stand with their arms around one another for a strangely long time, like they posed for a photo, then just kept posing. I didn't see Donny Jr.'s face in the vid anywhere, so there's one less thing that could make ya sick.

Expect the Mets!

Re: That's Some Team-Building Exercise

Wait - so the company says "all sharks were released"? If so, I really dont have much of an issue with it.

I'm with you Seo, no interest in doing it myself, but I don't mind others catching and releasing (or catching and eating any non endangered species) - its the "catch it and waste it" that bothers me.

Yes, the caption on that Mickey/Harvey pic says all the sharks were released. In the vid, shark guy explains that that particular area where they fished is a hot-bed for shark activity. Also, Sandy Alderson was in the group, so whether this was Mickey's idea or it wasn't, the boss being there is a pretty clear approval. Kinda glad I don't hate the Mets over this anymore.

The manager being there counts as "team apptoved activity" in my book, even if the GM isn't there.

Glad to learn that the sharks were ultimately released. So long as the sharks were released, I don't really have a problem with it.
