Trainer's Room: Injuries in 2018

Edgy MD
Feb 25 2018 04:25 PM

Dominic Smith is suffering from a strained right quad, almost certainly sustained on that dynamite stretch he performed yesterday. He has an MRI (which stands for "a Met is Really Injured") scheduled.

Also
Juan Lagares: strained lefty hammy, day-to-day.
Tim Tebow: sprained ankle, day to day, taking batting practice.
Jay Bruce: plantar fasciitis, day to day.

Longer-Term Dudes
Michael Conforto: dislocated shoulder, aiming for May 1, hitting against soft-toss pitching.
T.J. Rivera: torn UCL and Tommy John surgery, aiming for the second half, should begin throwing shortly.
David Wright: spinal stenosis, disc fusion surgery, rotator cuff surgery, actively rehabbing, allegedly back to his playing weight, return is anybody's guess.

Bruce: Plantar fasciatis.

That's one of those pestering injuries that could really linger. Here's hoping it doesn't.

In the great tradition of Mickey Mantle and Eliott Maddox, Tebow's ankle injury is the result of an unfortunate interaction with a sprinkler head.

Prognosis: Day-to-day.

Yoenis Céspedes
Injury/Malady: Mild shoulder soreness.

Prognosis: Day-to-day.

Dominic Smith
Injury/Malady: Strained quad, confirmed by MRI (stands for "Muscle Rip Indicator)."

Re: Trainer's Room: Injuries in 2018

the beating goes on...

Mets RH reliever Anthony Swarzak left Tuesday's game against the Astros in the top of the third inning due to an apparent injury.
Swarzak ran to cover first base on a grounder to first baseman Adrian Gonzalez, but was unable to catch what was an on-target toss from Gonzalez that would have ended the inning.
Swarzak was then visited by the trainer and departed the game.

no, he said he wasn't willing to commit to that.

you know, because he has to progress to that point and it's still February and he's starting slowly due to stiffness? but it was more of a "will he be ready in time" thing than a "oh, he's gonna miss three months" thing.

Sure but if he starts Tuesday he can start 4/1 instead of Opening Day. Or they can decide he's good to go but they'll limit him to 85 pitches for his first start of the season.

a billion times. it's the norm, but you instantly forget when it doesn't become more serious because it doesn't become more serious.

deGrom's already saying his side session went fine and he doesn't see any reason why he wouldn't be ready to go.

So deGrom got his throwing in, putting him back on schedule for opening day, Mr. Plantar Fasciitis is planted in right for today's lineup, and Lagares is taking his hammies out to center.

If they make it through today, things could be looking up. Get Céspequads out of the dh spot and into left once or twice next week, and we might be in business.

There's reportedly some concern that neither Rosario nor Smith will be ready for opening day.

It could be like 2010, when vets Mike Jacobs and Gary Matthews, Jr. appeared in the opening day lineup, but cleared out for younger players shortly after.

Re: Trainer's Room: Injuries in 2018

Hey look: Here's another article about the Mets revamping their training and nutrition regimen.

I have to say, good luck, but this is such a troubling pattern with them. Every few years (2005, 2010) they seem to admit they were half-assing it the year before and make a show of the new methods designed to prevent last year's calamities from happening this year. Remember when they adorned the clubhouse with the PREVENTON & RECOVERY signs? When their equipment staff was a pharmacy? When they screwed up Church's concussion treatment then made a gigantic show of how much they learned?

They finally whacked Ramirez -- he was hired in 2005 after the Reyes-needs-to-learn-how-to run fiasco -- but still employ a controversial strength trainer.

I feel like, baseball players guys are world-class athletes, and it ought to be an article of faith that the club is doing right by their training but it's always something. They seem incapable of balancing fitness and pushing-the-envelope training.

Anyway, meet the new nutritionist: is a firefighter you might recognize from your paper towel packaging. Another high-profile Michigan person, making me think this is a Jeff-Barwis thing:

Even though Mets left-hander Jason Vargas will undergo surgery on his right hand Tuesday, he might not miss any regular-season time, Tim Britton of The Athletic tweets. It’s not as if the soft-tossing Vargas is going to have to regain lost velocity, manager Mickey Callaway noted – “It’s not going to be too hard to go back and get his 84 again,” he said – while GM Sandy Alderson essentially expressed no concern over the situation. “If he can catch the ball coming back from the catcher, he’s probably good to go,” Alderson offered.

You can't remove an injured guy from the 40 anyhow.

The book closes on him for 2018, but he'll remain on the roster.

the 60-Day DL removes him from the 40 man in-season. I suspect he gets cut next offseason to keep him from impacting the 40 then (along with the negotiated retirement of David Wright)

It doesn't really remove him from the 40. It just keeps him from counting against the 40-man limit. For all other purposes, he's a man on the 40, with all rights and privileges, only moreso.

oh yeah, that's true, i'm thinking about him wasting a roster spot or not, i don't care that he is entitled to Wilpon's money or anything, that is a non-problem for us.

Vargas went four innings for Vegas Monday eve, allowing three runs, which is better than more than a few pitchers for the 51s this season. All the runs came in the third.

He's rejoining the Mets tonight and is expected to be activated and take the start Saturday.

Apparently, Robles is with the team and will be activated on Monday. I really don't care if he's healthy and there is a lack of healthy pitchers, there is no way that Robles should ever pitch again for the Mets. I would rather have Doug Sisk pitch for this team and I don't mean Sisk from 1984 I mean now and he's 60.

Re: Trainer's Room: Injuries in 2018

Jason Vargas was clearly beyond the simple and lowly skills of the New York/Penn League, throwing six shutout innings for The Cyclones against The Staten Island Yankees, giving up a lone single while walking none and striking out nine.

The Clones offense and pen were happy to help prepare him for his return to the Mets by giving him just a 1-0 lead to depart with and then blowing it in the bullpen, losing 2-1.

It was something of a reverse of the previous day, a 2-1 victory over the Yankees also featuring another encouraging start by a rehabbing Mets pitcher, with Noah Syndergaard going five innings, giving up one run on two hits, walking one, and striking out seven.

In the end I feel like we are going to be stuck with him. Even if he gets back and starts producing, I don't see any team taking on his salary for the remaining 2 years based on just a few good weeks.

I guess we can hope that he kills it for the entire second half, but even then with all the talent available in the offseason I don't see anyone taking him on.

Part of what makes it difficult to contend in 2019 is the money already committed to Bruce, Vargas and Anthony Swarzak.
