Multiple outlets reporting and the Mets acknowledging Rusty Staub not doing well.

Well, fuck.

That sucks. Rusty Staub is definitely one of the all-time Mets, both for his contributions to the 1973 pennant winner and his role as an elite pinch-hitter when he returned in the 1980s. I was at that 18-inning game in 1985 against the Pirates where they kept switching him between left field and right and he made that running catch.

Considering how huge Rusty has been for a long time now, I can't say I'm surprised by this news even though he's still a few weeks shy of turning 74 (4/1 - if he makes it).

Hoping for the best and wishing for peace for his family.

Being born in 1973, the image I have of Rusty is the second iteration of his Met life, the wizened pinch hitter. God bless.

Best to Rusty; everyone's favorite, a sprinkle more than the other favorites.

Side note: The Mets leading with F&J reaching out to Rusty reads like preemptive defensiveness after Eddie and Buddy let it be known the Wilpons never called or wrote.

Nor did they say a word or lift a finger to do anything to observe the passing of Nelson Doubleday, an act of omission that I consider to be their greatest indignity as the owners of the team.

They did offer a one-paragraph statement. http://www.nj.com/mets/index.ssf/2015/0 ... elson.html
There was a joint moment of silence for Doubleday and Darryl Hamilton at Citi Field at the outset of the first homestand following their respective passings. I remember it because I was fortunate enough to be in a suite that night and unfortunate enough to be next door to disrespectful dopes who wouldn't quit yapping during it.
