Y U No Run? Running 2018

Five weeks into 2018 and nary a single running post from the gallery?

I am still running. Training for the beautiful Big Sur Marathon, the last Sunday in April, 26.2 miles along the central California coastline, from Big Sur to Carmel. Long a "bucket list" race for me and I am training for it now.

Another steady month for me, in January -- 121 miles all total, 29.9 on my bike (I have a trainer, for use in my basement, and an odometer on the rear wheel to give me an approximate distance covered in miles), and the other 91.1 via running. Feeling healthy and happy when I'm running, which is the best case scenario.

Re: Y U No Run? Running 2018

i'm a slacky slacker. terrible, really. i managed zero miles in december without really trying to or having a good reason to gooseegg it...

my half-reason is that the weather wasn't terribly conducive to unslacking. and it seems like most of the unshitty weekend days were spent walking in close proximity to three year olds on balance bikes.

in january, i managed to get in a whole 13.2 miles, spread across 4 occasions! woo! did managed to get a bunch of unlogged miles on an exercise bike.

the three year olds are now 4 year olds, with training-wheeled bikes, so they're more mobile, but still not with any meaningful speed. i need to do a better job of taking advantage of what scant opportunities i have that aren't terribly icy, like today.

i did decide, though i have yet to actually fork over cash for it, that i'm going to do the star wars virtual half marathon, which is both a completely bullshit scam by disney for people to mostly just pay money to pretend to run a long distance and still get a medal, and at least a good incentive for me to do something.

i'm also signed up for the 2018 spring lake five mile run for memorial day weekend. so there's that, too.

I've made that drive dozens of times, one of my favorite places anywhere. That run is going to have some stunning views, homie.

A repeat winner of "Most Scenic Marathon in America" surveys, year after year. The course is no joke, 26.2 into a headwind and a 2 mile hill in the middle of the course. It's all good though.

I have not been allowed to run or lift weights since January 18th. I have gone for a few brisk 50 minute walks while reading on the treadmill. Hopefully, I will be cleared to resume my workout in another week or two.

Re: Y U No Run? Running 2018

Pretty well ramped up, mileage-wise, in preparation for my late April marathon. Got a total of 133 miles in for February, 15 via bike (indoor trainer) and 118 via running (111 outdoors and 7 on the track at my gym).

Got rejected in my 5th attempt to enter the NYC marathon via lottery. Pretty bummed.

Looking at the charity route. The official charity of the race, NYRR for Kids, seems like both a good cause (promoting running and fitness for young people in poor neighborhoods to attempt to combat childhood obesity) and perks ($2650 fundraiser requirements is just a bit more than the $2500 minimum, plus transportation to the start and a heated start line area). I have to consult with the Mrs. but I am likely to go that route.

Re: Y U No Run? Running 2018

Strong March worth of training, for me, 166 miles total (22.4 on my bike trainer and the remaining 143.6 on foot). Lots of easy long runs this past month.

April will be busy -- a half marathon, a week from today, in Ithaca (plus 8 miles before the race as my last long run before my 26.2), then a ten mile race in Orlando while on vacation with the family, and, lastly, a trip to Big Sur for marathon #13. I'm feeling great -- ran a hilly 16 miles yesterday at a consistent 8:40/mi pace, which is where my long runs have mostly been this past session. Prior to that, the other weekends this month, I ran a 19.7 mile run, a 14 miler, an 18.1, and a 17 mile run the first weekend of the month.

And May? Oh, boy, more on tap for May :)

Re: Y U No Run? Running 2018

March was my first time back in the gym after being away for 6 weeks following my surgery. I ran a little slower as I eased back into running. I got in 13 sessions (weight lifting followed by running) for the month. I covered 60.92 miles for the month.

I was surprised that the running came back much easier than the weight training did. Thankfully, the stiffness and soreness went away after the first week, but I am still much weaker than I was at the 1st of the year. I am slowly making progress back to where I had been and hope to be back on my old routine by May 1st.

Re: Y U No Run? Running 2018

Put my 13th marathon in the books today, I ran and completed the Big Sur Marathon, from Big Sur, CA to Carmel, CA, in 3:56:22, which put me 75th out of 321 dudes in my age bracket, and 670th out of 4491 total finishers (top 15%). There was wind, and rain and 1800` of total elevation gain. It was the toughest 26.2 mile course I have ever run and I was beyond pleased to have been able to come in under four hours.

Thanks Doc! I do. It was a grueling 26.2 miles but I only walked at the water/food stops. Had I taken any walking breaks of even a few minutes I would have missed my goal time.

Strong mileage for April, 152 total, split over 36 on my bike and 116 on runs. At 583.8 miles for 2018 to date. Ran races in New York, Florida and California all in one month.

Busy May on tap -- my annual favorite local race, the ten mile Mountain Goat run this Sunday, and the Ottawa Marathon the day prior to Memorial Day. Plus hopefully lots of warm weather days for biking and running.

Here are some snapshots I took, I drove the course the day prior to the race, to preview it, and get some pics along the way. Glad I did, as the race day was overcast and much less conducive to photos compared to the day I took these.

If you're going to run, that looks like a beautiful scenic course to do it on.

I got to the gym for 16 workouts in April. I ran a total of 75.22 miles. I have slowed my pace a little, but I have increased the incline that I run. It took me roughly 6 weeks, but I am back to doing my full workouts without reducing the number of reps or amount of weight.

Re: Y U No Run? Running 2018

Capped another strong month with 3.2 easy miles in the humidity after work, putting me at 103.6 miles running and 90.4 miles biking, 194 total for May.

Ran my 14th full marathon last weekend, a 3:46:50 in Ottawa, returning to the scene of my very first marathon in 2013. We got fortunate weather, cool, cloudy and breezy with temps between 55-63 for most of the morning. I will be writing a more detailed report for the running thread on Reddit and I'll share that link here.

Got a few things on tap for June - the anniversary of my very first 5k, in 2010, which I am doing this Saturday for the 9th straight year, and the JPMC Corporate Challenge 3.5 miler the following Wednesday with my coworkers.

I only got 11 workouts/runs in this month. I didn't do anything than lay on the beach and occasionally lift a pint of craft beer during an 8 day vacation on Ocracoke Island. Still managed to run 52.3 miles, so the month wasn't a total wash out.

Set a new 5k PR for me, in my 74th 5k (yes, that is a lot!), running a 21:15, good enough to place me 37th out of 1967 runners and 2nd out of 65 in my age group. Six days after a full marathon and I felt no ill effect from those long miles, had plenty of bounce in my step. Feels great to still be getting better after nearly nine years of running.

Re: Y U No Run? Running 2018

not nearly enough.

a combination of things just kinda conspired against me the past year or two, combined with a healthy dose of apathy and laziness.

i'm trying to get my ass refocused on running more. i'm planning to run the army ten miler in october as part of a work team, and having that on my calendar is enough to get me going. not having an actual long distance race looming made it too easy to slack if i didn't quite feel the urgency of a race.

the biggest challenge right now is finding the time. coaching minimm in soccer takes away one of my weekend days, and other obligations got in the way of most of my sundays. and why run long if you don't need to train, right? mix in some busyness at work and it's a recipe for disaster.

in april/may, though, minimm and the μmms had been doing a 5-week kid-racing series a town over from us. there were a bunch of narrow age divisions, each with their own specifc distance. 2/3 year olds ran about 50 meters, 4/5 year olds ran about 75 meters, Kindergartners and first graders ran 1/4 mile, 2nd and 3rd grade ran a half mile, and 4th thru 6th grade ran a full mile. the boys had a blast doing it, and we all really got into it. for the parents, though, there was a parent fun mile planned for the last week. and naturally i'd circled the date on my calendar.

the mile course had about a 80' rise in the second quarter, with the rest being either flat or downhill, with a flat finish. my goal going in was to get my mile into the sevens, and hopefully beat anybody i thought i should. lining up, there were about twenty or so parents ready to run, mrs.mm included. i realized then that most of the parents who would race already run 5ks and whatnot, so they probably didn't feel the need to test their mettle in a fun parents mile. there was one dad, a coworker and neighbor, whose daughter is a friend of minimm's, who was clearly my only challenger. everyone else was basically joking that it was a fun run, so no racing was to be expected. but... that's not how my lizard brain works.

it was a wet, damp, swampy course, with long grass and deep puddles.

the start was downhill. which was exactly what i needed to find a groove. i shoot off the line, but consciously hold back so as not to prematurely burn myself out. sloshing through the puddles, i can tell there's only one person on my heels. and he's but a few steps behind. we wind through a muddy field, and turn onto a sidewalk. my brain is telling me to go go GO!!!! but i hold back. i know the hill is coming, and hills are my thing. plus, pounding on concrete sucks, so i conserve just a smackerel of energy. crossing a small pedestrian bridge, we turn off the sidewalk and start going up the long grassy hill. i feel the footsteps behind me. i tell myself that if i push up this hill, i can break my opponent's will. that's always been my cross country strategy, after all. halfway up, he's still there, but fading. i push harder, feeling good, reminding myself that when i get to the top, i need to accelerate over the crest and keep my speed once it flattens out. that's always been the challenge on hills, pushing through the crest and transitioning to a flatter form. near the top, we hit the halfway. i've opened up a gap. over the crest, i go, and down a slippery side-slope, and around the back fence of a softball field. after the field, its a downhill ridge to the final quarter. and the last 200m are flat and straight shot to the finish line. it's just me, all alone. it's kinda fun being in the lead - i don't think i'd ever actually experienced that in my running career! seeing the finish line, i suddenly wished they had been running a clock, or i'd worn a watch - i knew i was running a pretty good time, but had no idea what it was. but i was feeling good. i opened it up just a bit more - i'd been mentally prepared to have to race to the finish, not be all alone in a laugher - but held back from a full-on sprint. no need to risk pulling a hammy, or look like even more of a showoff! i crossed the finish line, still hoping for an official clock. no luck. second place didn't come through for maybe another 30 seconds. at least.

lacking an official time, i turned to the next best thing. minimm was snapping photos the whole time. he caught the start, and the finish. checking the timestamps, and a little bit of math later... 6:59. holy shit. mind you, when i run at lunchtime, i'm huffing and puffing when i start out at a 8:45, on dead-flat ground. like, i'd tried to squeeze in some speedwork, and was completely gassed by an 8:00 pace in a few 400s. yet after this race, i still felt fresh. like if i'd actually had to -race- i could've taken another 15 seconds off, easy. not bad for a 215lb behemoth who'd barely run hard in at least two years. i guess it's all mental. and some physical. and a bunch of adrenaline and stuff, too.

the next day, i felt sore, like i'd actually worked, but not too bad. and my running since then has been re-invigorated.

i don't think i'm close, anywhere near, to pushing that speed through a full 5k, but it's nice to know it's in there.

and last weekend i ran my annual spring lake five mile run. five miles. 80 degrees sunny and humid with zilch for a breeze off the ocean. and 10,000 more people to run with. started out slow and in the thick of the crowd with mrs.mm. taking it easy. too crowded to really move. after the first two miles, i tried to run it more aggressively. well, assertively. couldn't have run much faster if i'd wanted to, there were so many many people. every gap that opened up closed just as quick. struggled to get my last two miles in under 9:00 each. was able to open it up a bit in the final quarter mile, but at that point, i kinda feel like a dick sprinting it in. so i typically save that for anyone else dickishly sprinting it in past me. gotta put those guys in their place, amirite? not a concern this race, so i just cruised on in to the end. the good thing was, though my time was slow, i felt strong for the distance, and ran seven miles two days later at a faster pace than i'd run in the 5 mile race.

so i'm getting back. and itching to get faster running mixed in more consistently.

maybe come october i'll have a better race report to go through.

btw, i've still got you by one second. 21:14. run faster! :P

(though that was NEVER 6 days after a full. sheesh! )

Another strong month for me, 100.9 miles biking and 107.1 miles running for July.

Dealing with an abdominal strain that is stubbornly hanging around. I ice it a few times per day and it's slowly healing. It's tough to do long 15+ mile training runs and spend so much time focused on my core but I have another marathon, on September 30th, and have to stay on target for it.

While there's no official record for the marathon -- every course being different and all -- Kenyan Eliud Kipchoge ran today's Berlin Marathon in a stunning 2:01:40
That's one minute and 17 seconds faster than any other one recorded.

So, in his honor, go out and run a 4:39 mile ... and then go do it again 25 more times in a row.

Amazing. I am running my 15th marathon two weeks from today and I hope to come in under 3:40:00 for the first time, as I'm returning to the Wineglass Marathon, the site of my previous best 3:41:17 from four years ago.
