Skiing and SnowBoarding - 2018

Any other skiiers/boarders on the forum?

My kids have been skiing since they were little, but have been trying out snowboards the last few years. Since they are back to learning, the small mountains come back into play.

Took my daughter to Mt. Peter this past Saturday. Super easy for a day trip. Hour and 15 minutes from the city. Small hill, but plenty of space if you want to learn.

I'll be taking the family to Butternut in Great Barrington over Presidents. Nice family mountain, a few clean hotels nearby. I like the food and the town. Certainly beats trying to find a decent place to eat in Vermont.

I enjoyed it when I did it. Here's a related question to the first two sentences.

what age did you start your kids at? I think 3.5 is probably too young right now, but maybe it'll be fun in another year to at least try?

I love skiiing, and there is even a small operation within five miles of my house. But I don't get to do it very often.

Last time I went I was chaperoning our church youth group and some of the kids lured me over to an area where there were some very little jumps. Maybe only a foot or so tall. They were flying off them with ease. I got cocky by the end of the day. I have a memory of sliding down hill sprawled on my back, head first, poles and skis gone, looking up at the quickly moving sky and trees above me and realizing that there was pretty much no way to stop until I got to the bottom.

Luckily, it didn't get that bad. But we stuck to safer activities for the remainder of the day.

Swore off skiing a long time ago. I like my legs unbroken.

Me too. I've skiied three or four times in my life, and not at all since high school. I hated it each and every time. The last time I was doing okay, but the fist time I fell some other kid ran over my head. That was enough for me. I walked the rest of the way downhill and sat in the lodge drinking hot chocolate until it was time to take the bus back to Long Island.

My son started skiing at age 4. I thought that was the perfect age to start him. But then my daughter started at age 3 since she couldn't stand to be left out while her brother got to have fun. For some reason it was a bad ski season and we didn't get out much that year, but it was good to get her started anyway.

I wanted them to get decent at skiing while they were young, since it seems like all the kids are snowboarding these days. I figured eventually they'd want to try that out.

The switch inevitably happened. Both are having fun on the snowboards, though on long trips they bring their skis and will ski at least one day. Hopefully they can do both for the rest of their lives.

My mother and father are 69 and 70 respectively, and avid skiers. One of their favorite things is flying down the mountain with their grandkids.
