New job!

Had this on FB today, but wanted to share with the friends here. Very excited about this new opportunity.

It has been such a tremendous honor working for Governor Rick Snyder and Lt. Governor Brian Calley. They care so deeply about this state and its people.

Changes they set in place reinvented Michigan to end the "lost decade," and also put our state on a successful path that will help residents long into the future.

I've also loved working with the team at the Department of Talent and Economic Development, a new adventure that focused on helping residents get in-demand skills for rapidly changing workplaces.

Our goal is to make Michigan the leader in developing and attracting talent so the economic reinvention under Governor and Lt. Governor extends for generations to come.

Community colleges play a vital role in that effort, and will become more important as people recognize the need for lifelong learning and adding new skills.

Touring community colleges around the state, I know Grand Rapids Community College is one of the very best. President Bill Pink is an amazing person, and he's asked me to come on board as his new communications director and tell the stories of the college and the people who attend it.

I'm very excited about this next chapter. Attending Nassau Community College in New York changed my life, giving me the skills and confidence for a career in journalism and public service. I want to help others have opportunities to follow their dreams.

I know, and deeply appreciate, that I'm blessed. I have a supportive family that accepted many challenges that go with working in politics and public policy. It gets pretty rough. And I've had wonderful mentors, especially at the The Grand Rapids Press and MLive.com, who patiently inspired, guided, and corrected me along the way.

Thank you!

That makes me smile. People who are always jostling their kids into power universities make me scratch my head. I guess there's a reason.

But I love local and community colleges too!

And yeah I know I defend Penn State, but it is a local college for me, as is Lock Haven University and Penn College in Williamsport.

(And Lycoming but it's $$$!)

Thanks, everyone!

DocTee, I didn't realize you did that. I'll absolutely pick your brain!

Had a good first week. My office is on a floor called the Mezzanine, which makes me think of Shea. I'll need a green chair.

Gratz 41!

But go with the original blue for the chair.

Then you're set!
You may not be wrong. I thought they went green in the mezz in later years. Can't find a pic to corroborate that though.

Congratulations, 41. Hope your mezzanine seats aren't under the overhang, because you can't see a damn thing from there. Also hoping some of those lefty academics will convince you to come over to the dark side. We have cookies. Sweet, vegan, gluten-free cookies.

See, the fact that you guys think vegan, gluten-free cookies are a recruiting tool is part of the problem! :)

I did bring them a big batch of my chocolate chip cookies on the first day. I'll have to send Zvon a photo of my new office so he can digitally decorate it again.

Giving my notice tomorrow morning after 7+ years with the same company -- a round of layoffs to the team that I support, two months ago, got me looking. I'm excited and anxious to go somewhere new. My new job starts December 10th.

Re: New job!

yeah congratz on the new gig.

I move to a new office next week that will cut my commute time by three (literally a mile and a half away in Brooklyn --L train shutdown anxiety). Mixed feelings as I like this office we have and not sure i'll ever get into Manhattan again.

Re: New job!

I am liking it so far. I'm adjusting to being the newest guy that can't do much to help yet while accepting that it's a temporary state while I ramp up on their proprietary product and the technologies and applications I don't already know how to use. But the place itself is great, the coworkers are nice, my boss is supportive and I have nothing negative to say.

And, since I've left my previous employer, two more long time managers and another senior engineer also gave their notice. It's a sinking ship.
