EXPECTATIONS FOR 18: Steven Matz

Body language. I'm working on it.

I get it. You win some, you lose some. But either way, you've to get back out there with the mound presence. I wish I could be like Bartolo, and when somebody homers off of me, just play catch with myself until the next batter. But I get so gosh darn upset when adversity strikes. I want to make my foxy grandpa dance more, and make my Contemporary Christian wife write inspiring songs about me. And I press. And the body language is ... well, I guess it's not re-assuring ... unless you're the next batter.

Spring is for working on stuff, so I guess I'll work on that. Summer, fall ... that's the time for putting up numbers. Actually ... it's the time for not getting hurt and for putting up numbers. What numbers are you going to see next to my name?

And will I get hurt? OH, GOD, not again!

Unreliable and until that changes, will pitch like it. That's when he pitches at all. If he was any other guy, fans wouldn't hesitate to speak if him as though he was Aaron Heilman, who incidentally accomplished quite a bit more as a Met and a pro as Matz ever had, and perhaps ever will.

I get it, he can be and might be good, but he's gotta start being good and reliably so before we treat him as such. Till then, he's a just another fragile, unpredictable arm. 12 starts, 4.91 ERA, 3 DL assignments each for a different ailment, 2 games where he's got a big lead and leaves with a big deficit, 1 game where he does really well and his grandfather cheers him on.

PROVE ME WRONG, STEVE

4-3 in 2018, fan frustration with him doesn't miss a stride.

I think he's maybe the guy on this team I'm least confident in guessing how he might do. He looks like a bag of chewed assholes this spring.

I'd like to see it! Never *started* more than 22 games in a year, yet you've got him with 25 decisions!

Re: EXPECTATIONS FOR 18: Steven Matz

He currently seems to have a lot of positive vibe around him, given that he's had a few good consecutive exhibition game outings. If he maintains this, it will be fantastic, but I'm skeptical.

Two years ago on May 25, Matz was 7-1 with a 2.36 ERA and 50 strikeouts and 9 walks in 49.2 innings. If that's how he pitches when healthy, and if he defies his history and stays healthy, then maybe this will be his year.

It seemed like a cakewalk to Rookie of the Year at that point. Whoops.

I'm hoping that the same thing that surgery that was successful for deGrom is just as effective for Matz.

14-11. 3.78 ERA.
