EXPECTATIONS FOR 18: Marcos Molina

A former top pitching prospect who got hurt, I put myself back in the mix last year. Yeah, my velocity isn't all the way back and possibly never will be, but I cleared the 100-inning plateau and had a respectable year doing it. When literally dozens of pitchers were coming up hurt between St. Lucie and Bingo, being a healthy guy was a relief. Now it's time to climb those last few steps.

How much climbing will there be? Because, you know, the Mets could use someone like me. Starting, relieving, I dunno, but top prospects don't just throw up their hands and quit. What's next? Because this beard will not be kept down on the farm.

Know what's sadder than being a former top prospect on the long road back? Arizona Fall League crowds are sadder.

Which always struck me as weird, because when ELSE is it pleasant to watch baseball in Arizona... And what is competing with baseball in those towns, at those times?

Molina has a career in front of him-- the only question is whether he can develop a third pitch and make himself a starter.

Nothing Metly in 2018, except for maybe some September fluff.

He's 23? Looks more like pushing 30 in some pics.

Released.

Probably had a chance to clear waivers, but he instead gets released outright.

So, this is worth talking about. Molina hadn't been fooling anybody this year, but that makes it even more likely he could have cleared waivers. If he doesn't, it's the same, effectively as a release, except the Mets don't carry his salary. Also eligible for a pass through waivers was the recently debuting Drew Gagnon. Most obviously, they could have retroactively put Yoenis Céspedes on the 60-Day DL, having already covered 58 of those days.

But nope, it's an exit instead through a trap door for Molina, who was listed as among the team's top two or three prospects after a great 2014 in Brooklyn, before getting derailed by injuries, and then pitching his way back onto prospect lists (but not in the lofty position of previous years) with a solid 2017.

Keith openly speculated that he was in somebody's doghouse, while Ronnie suggested that he was a victim of the new regime, having lost his champion when Alderson stepped down.
