JK. It was me being me, tilting at windmills again. Later OE: Flashback - The first CPF-er I ever met was Kase. It was at a flea market. He told me that there was an old Mets Yearbook, among other memorabilia, for sale and wondered if I would be interested in buying it. I said I wasn't, but thanked him for telling me about it. I guess I'm not a yearbook kind of guy.

Yes, they are! Thank you! Still missing three: * Revised edition cover for 1991 (Vince Coleman and Hubie Brooks) * 2017 cover * 2018 cover And, perhaps, any other years (that I may not recall) where the revised cover is substantially different from the original. I just know about 1977, 1990, and 1991. Are there any others?

Edgy MD Mar 15 2018 10:11 AM Re: Introducing the Mets Yearbook Cover Derby! |
The 1982 is my dark horse. It's deeply and joyfully blue and at the same time wonderfully disposable looking. It's like a cross between the cover of a Little League dinner program and the cover of a gay wedding program. It's like a high-end chewing gum wrapper.

Do they have different-looking covers? If we can put two Spanish versions in the mix, that would get us to a nice NCAA-friendly count of 64.

Through 1999, there were four. 1988 (same front cover as English), 1989 has different photos and Mets logo baseball (I might not have this, now I'm gonna go all ocd), 1990 not sure what is on the cover and 1992 there's a bi-lingual edition Los Mets de Nueva York with Bonilla pictured. No idea if they continued after that.

|
Benjamin Grimm Mar 15 2018 01:41 PM Re: Introducing the Mets Yearbook Cover Derby! |
My greatest familiarity is with the covers of the 1970s and 1980s. By the 90s I was buying with less enthusiasm, and I stopped altogether a few years ago, when I realized I was bringing them home and putting them on a shelf with barely a glance inside.
|
batmagadanleadoff Mar 15 2018 02:21 PM Re: Introducing the Mets Yearbook Cover Derby! |
No to 1st round chronological order matchups. Those Willard Mullin covers are among the best. Why don't you secretly seed them yourself and then have a 1 v 64, 2 v 63, etc. NCAA style bracket. Do that without telling us you did that.
|
Edgy MD Mar 15 2018 02:56 PM Re: Introducing the Mets Yearbook Cover Derby! |
Yeah, I think treating 1962 as the top seed and 2018 as the bottom has merit. Without endorsing a favorite, I'd say that keeps like from matching up against like until the later rounds.
|
cooby Mar 15 2018 05:01 PM Re: Introducing the Mets Yearbook Cover Derby! |
Obviously, we think this exciting :D
|
Frayed Knot Mar 15 2018 05:17 PM Re: Introducing the Mets Yearbook Cover Derby! |

I think a totally random set-up would be the fairest way to go. Any other would tend to have some kind of bias, intended or otherwise. And even though this can be set up like the college hoops tourney, there's no real seeding to do. Each year is its own entry but it's not like it pre-earned a right to face off against a particular level or era of opponent.

Yeah, I'm currently at 63, which isn't going to work. We'll either have to add a 64th cover, or I'll have to skip the one Spanish cover and go with one cover getting a first-round bye.

Since this is going to take a couple of months to get through, I figured we might as well get started sooner rather than later. (There's also pressure from the home office to get this underway before the Daily News steals this idea as well.) The competition between the 1962 and 2018 covers will, of course, have to wait for 2018 to become available, but all remaining matchups will be presented, starting Friday, in random order.

Sign me up for the graphic department. Writing is not my strong suit. I have to write a fictional interview with Ray Sadecki concerning the (not so famous yet) Sadecki Spot and I don't know where to begin, how to end, or what to say in the middle. Anyone want to do that for absolutely no remuneration? I can afford to give full credit. :) My plan is to make a comic/panel type of post for that.

G-Fafif Mar 25 2018 01:27 PM Re: Introducing the Mets Yearbook Cover Derby! |
I don't remember when the broadcasts stopped advertising the yearbook, particularly the opportunity to send a check or money order for a dollar-fifty (including postage and handling) to Shea Stadium, Flushing, N.Y. 11368 (which I did to obtain my first). Bob, Ralph and Lindsey showing it and talking it up made every edition -- with its suitable for framing team picture -- a must have for every baseball library. I doubt I would have made a beeline every year for the concession to get one had I not been so expertly primed to part with my 75 cents or dollar or whatever it rose to as time went by. Though I've dutifully laid down my cash for one every year of my sentient game-going life, they now feel part curio from another age, part orphaned from the entire Met experience. The announcers don't mention them. I don't believe there's any real push to sell them via PA. Like so much of what we are ingrained to look for as baseball fans, the yearbook is one of those things you wouldn't necessarily invent today if it hadn't been invented already.

Coincidence City: I had lunch today with a gentleman whose father's company was responsible for printing the Mets yearbooks during the latter half of their first quarter-century or so. Had several swell stories related to being a kid who occasionally got to meet players and see things in shall we say the classic era of Mets baseball (which is to say when he and I and a number of you were young).

|
Benjamin Grimm Mar 31 2018 06:10 AM Re: Introducing the Mets Yearbook Cover Derby! |
Round 1.02 has now closed, with 1983 winning an easy 12-5 victory over 1996.

The Spanish-language 1992 cover, which probably isn't a yearbook at all and is therefore a likely ringer in this competition, has been eliminated by the 1987 Original Edition, by a resounding score of 18-1. That one vote that the Bonilla cover received saved it from the ignominy of being the first cover to suffer a shutout loss.

Today's poll was the 22nd of the first round, which means we've been presented with 44 of the 64 covers that are participating in this competition. Tomorrow, the 16th poll closes, at which point we'll know half of our first-round winners. We have our second unanimous winner. In the 29th poll of the first round, the 1988 cover received all 17 votes cast, thus eliminating the 1991 revised edition.
|
Benjamin Grimm Apr 28 2018 04:58 AM Re: Introducing the Mets Yearbook Cover Derby! |
Our 30th first-round poll, which spanned exactly a half century of yearbook covers, received a mere 13 votes, but Willard Mullin's 1965 cover got 11 of those 13, and thereby advances to the second round as 2015 retreats to the sidelines.

Thank goodness. I've been thoughtfully comparing and contrasting matchbook covers all week and it's just not the same.

Benjamin Grimm Apr 29 2018 04:48 AM Re: Introducing the Mets Yearbook Cover Derby! |
Our first round has had very few close votes, but this one was in fact close. With only a two-vote margin, the 2007 cover, in something of an upset, has knocked out the 1973 cover by a vote of 10 to 8.
|
Benjamin Grimm Apr 30 2018 08:43 AM Re: Introducing the Mets Yearbook Cover Derby! |
The final poll of the first round has now closed, and the 1984 cover has defeated the 1995 cover by a closer-than-usual vote of 9 to 6.

Benjamin Grimm May 04 2018 07:51 AM Re: Introducing the Mets Yearbook Cover Derby! |
It looks like there's a lot less interest in this thing now that we're in the second round. I'm not going to abandon the project, but I think I might accelerate it so that it wraps up more quickly. Don't be surprised if we start seeing multiple polls introduced each day instead of one at a time.

The 1962 Baby Met cover, which romped to a unanimous 21-0 victory in the first round, faced a bit more resistance the second time around, with four votes against. Final tally: 16 votes for 1962, and 4 for 1990.

The 21st Century earns its first berth in the Sweet Sixteen as the 2002 cover, with Casey Stengel and Bobby Valentine, scores a 11-3 victory over the 1977 original edition celebrating Jerry Koosman's 20-win season.

Its looking like the Academy might want to take the proceeds from the Yearbook Cover Derby and build a Willard Mullin rotunda.
|
Benjamin Grimm May 10 2018 07:34 AM Re: Introducing the Mets Yearbook Cover Derby! |
Our lone remaining cover from the current decade survives another round, winning an 8-5 victory over the 1985 cover.
|
Benjamin Grimm May 11 2018 05:54 AM Re: Introducing the Mets Yearbook Cover Derby! |
In our third unanimous result, and the first of the second round, the 1970 cover has ousted the 1984 cover by capturing all 14 votes cast.
|
Benjamin Grimm May 12 2018 05:29 AM Re: Introducing the Mets Yearbook Cover Derby! |
Today was a good day for Mr. Met in the Yearbook Cover Derby. In all the years of Mets yearbooks, he's only been featured on the cover twice, in 1963 and again in 1976. And both of those covers were winners in the polls that closed today. The 1963 cover scored an easy 15 to 1 victory over the 1989 Revised Edition and the Bicentennial cover prevailed over John Stearns' 1978 action shot, 12 to 8.

Benjamin Grimm May 13 2018 05:03 AM Re: Introducing the Mets Yearbook Cover Derby! |
Two more polls have closed today. The 1968 Willard Mullin cover with the portrait of Gil Hodges defeated the silver 25th Anniversary 1986 cover, 12 votes to 5. And the 1971 action shot of Jerry Grote making a tag at the plate fared better than the similar John Stearns cover from seven years later. The 1971 edition knocked out 1983, 14 votes to 4.
|
Benjamin Grimm May 14 2018 04:42 AM Re: Introducing the Mets Yearbook Cover Derby! |
Today two more covers advance, and two more are eliminated. In a clash of Shea Stadium images, the 1964 cover logs an 11-5 victory over the 1991 fireworks cover, and Mike Piazza's 2000 cover gets the better of Tom Seaver and his balls, from 1975, 13 to 1.
|
Benjamin Grimm May 15 2018 07:22 AM Re: Introducing the Mets Yearbook Cover Derby! |
Today's poll closings consist of a 12-7 victory by the 1967 Willard Mullin "stairway" cover over the 1987 cover featuring the World Championship logo and a 15-3 win for the 1972 cover featuring four Mets stars over 1997's Todd Hundley hologram cover.
|
Benjamin Grimm May 16 2018 07:45 AM Re: Introducing the Mets Yearbook Cover Derby! |
The 1965 cover has defeated the 1988 cover, 11 to 3, and 1974 has ousted 1999 by a vote of 11 to 4.

The decade the Mets let Old Timers Day and Banner Day wither and die. Seems apropos that the yearbooks wouldn't keep up with their predecessors.

Benjamin Grimm May 25 2018 08:10 AM Re: Introducing the Mets Yearbook Cover Derby! |
Third-round polls are beginning to close. Today, the 1962 Baby Met cover completes its comeback victory over 2002's Casey-to-Bobby cover. 2002 had had a 9-6 lead, but four late unanswered votes gave the victory to the toddler in the Mets cap.
|
G-Fafif May 25 2018 09:56 AM Re: Introducing the Mets Yearbook Cover Derby! |
I voted for 2002 because it was everything I could have wanted out of a commemorative cover (and I continue to be amazed the Mets pulled off something that savvy) but I'm not at all sorry to see the baby toddle onward.
|
Benjamin Grimm May 26 2018 01:08 PM Re: Introducing the Mets Yearbook Cover Derby! |
Two more polls have closed. 1976 wins the battle of the Mr. Met covers, 15 to 1, and Willard Mullin's 1968 Gil Hodges cover ousts the 1971 cover, 12 to 4.

Benjamin Grimm May 28 2018 04:33 AM Re: Introducing the Mets Yearbook Cover Derby! |
Today's poll closings mark the end of the third round. We see another victory for Willard Mullin, but also his very first defeat. The 1974 N.L. pennant cover has bumped Mullin's "You're the Most" 1965 entry from the competition by a vote of 12 to 7. Mullin's 1966 "GO-GO-GO" cover, however, eliminated Bill Gallo's "Recipe for Mets Magic" from 1981, by a count of 14 to 3. Gallo's cover was the last remaining cover from the 1980s.
|
Benjamin Grimm Jun 05 2018 06:45 AM Re: Introducing the Mets Yearbook Cover Derby! |
A 10 to 4 win makes 1970 our first cover to advance to the Final Four and sends 1962 and Baby Met to the showers, or, perhaps, a bath in the kitchen sink.

Benjamin Grimm Jun 07 2018 06:55 AM Re: Introducing the Mets Yearbook Cover Derby! |
1967 becomes the third cover to join the Final Four as it scores a comfy 13-1 victory over 1964.
|
Edgy MD Jun 07 2018 07:12 AM Re: Introducing the Mets Yearbook Cover Derby! |
I like how 1967 no longer needs "New York." At least, not necessarily. It's 1967, and the Mets are the Mets. What other Mets could they be?
|
Benjamin Grimm Jun 08 2018 07:18 AM Re: Introducing the Mets Yearbook Cover Derby! |
1966 eliminates 1974 by a vote of 8 to 4. (Lower than normal participation for this one.) This completes our Final Four. Our four surviving covers (1966, 1967, 1968, and 1970) were all issued over a span of five years. Three of the four covers feature the artwork of Willard Mullin.

Our two finalists are... 1967 and 1968! 1967 scored an easy 11-2 victory over 1966, and 1968 pulled out from what had been a neck-and-neck race to defeat 1970 by a vote of 14 to 8.
