Re: Introducing the Mets Yearbook Cover Derby!

I haven't figured that out yet either, but we'll soon see.

I found a webpage that had quality images of most of the covers, but there are a few gaps, and if anyone can provide images I'd appreciate it.

What's missing are:

* The original 1977 cover (with Jerry Koosman)
* Revised edition cover for 1990 (Bud Harrelson)
* Revised edition cover for 1991 (Vince Coleman and Hubie Brooks)
* 2017 cover
* 2018 cover
* Any other years (that I may not recall) where the revised cover is substantially different from the original

I see a number of poor images online, but I'd like a crisp clean image that's at least 500 pixels in height.

If anyone can help let me know. I do have the 1977 Koosman cover that I can scan myself if nobody has a better version.

OE: Flashback - The first CPF-er I ever met was Kase. It was at a flea market. He told me that there was an old Mets Yearbook, among other memorabilia, for sale and wondered if I would be interested in buying it. I said I wasn't, but thanked him for telling me about it. I guess I'm not a yearbook kind of guy.

Still missing three:

* Revised edition cover for 1991 (Vince Coleman and Hubie Brooks)
* 2017 cover
* 2018 cover

And, perhaps, any other years (that I may not recall) where the revised cover is substantially different from the original. I just know about 1977, 1990, and 1991. Are there any others?

Re: Introducing the Mets Yearbook Cover Derby!

The 1982 is my dark horse. It's deeply and joyfully blue and at the same time wonderfully disposable looking. It's like a cross between the cover of a Little League dinner program and the cover of a gay wedding program. It's like a high-end chewing gum wrapper.

Bonus points for the skyline logo being hand-illustrated.

Re: Introducing the Mets Yearbook Cover Derby!

Thank you again!

We're just about all set. All we need is the 2018 cover and we can get started.

It looks like there will be 62 covers in this competition. If that holds true, we'll have 31 first-round polls. The first-round winner with the best vote percentage will get a second-round bye and advance directly to the Sweet Sixteen.

This is being put together in a hurry, so we have yet to hear from the people in Stockholm regarding how the winning cover will be honored.

Through 1999, there were four. 1988 (same front cover as English), 1989 has different
photos and Mets logo baseball (I might not have this, now I'm gonna go all ocd), 1990
not sure what is on the cover and 1992 there's a bi-lingual edition Los Mets de Nueva

No idea if they continued after that.

Re: Introducing the Mets Yearbook Cover Derby!

My greatest familiarity is with the covers of the 1970s and 1980s. By the 90s I was buying with less enthusiasm, and I stopped altogether a few years ago, when I realized I was bringing them home and putting them on a shelf with barely a glance inside.

There are some nice covers in the collection, and more than a few that are hideous. I already know which one is my own favorite. (I'll mention it when it appears in a poll.) I was pleased to see that not all of the more recent covers are as bad as I was thinking they were.

Unlike the Tabloid Cover Derby, these covers won't be presented in chronological order. (I don't want to start with 1962 vs. 1963, and then go to 1964 vs. 1965.)

I can either scramble them and we'd have random first-round assignments, or we can work from opposite ends: 1962 vs. 2018, 1963 vs. 2017, etc.

Thoughts?

batmagadanleadoff
Mar 15 2018 02:21 PM
Re: Introducing the Mets Yearbook Cover Derby!

No to 1st round chronological order matchups. Those Willard Mullin covers are among the best. Why don't you secretly seed them yourself and then have a 1 v 64, 2 v 63, etc. NCAA style bracket. Do that without telling us you did that.

OE--- I already know which is my fave. For many, many years.

Edgy MD
Mar 15 2018 02:56 PM
Re: Introducing the Mets Yearbook Cover Derby!

Yeah, I think treating 1962 as the top seed and 2018 as the bottom has merit. Without endorsing a favorite, I'd say that keeps like from matching up against like until the later rounds.

I think a totally random set-up would be the fairest way to go. Any other would tend to have some kind of bias, intended or otherwise.
And even though this can be set up like the college hoops tourney, there's no real seeding to do. Each year is its own entry but it's not like it pre-earned a right to face off against a particular level or era of opponent.

Do you need one more for 64? I can look tomorrow if you do.

I'm in the random or 1962-2018 camp along with the other comments.
Matching the early year covers against each other in the opening rounds
wouldn't be fair to their greatness.

Benjamin Grimm
Mar 15 2018 08:37 PM
Re: Introducing the Mets Yearbook Cover Derby!

Yeah, I'm currently at 63, which isn't going to work. We'll either have to add a 64th cover, or I'll have to skip the one Spanish cover and go with one cover getting a first-round bye.

I'd rather extend to 64 if possible.

Another option would be to include the World Series programs from 1969, 1973, and 2015. (1986 and 2000 had generic MLB covers.) But they're not actually yearbooks, so I'm not sure if that would be appropriate. And the people in Stockholm aren't returning my calls. AND it would get us to 66, which is also problematic, but in a different way.

Re: Introducing the Mets Yearbook Cover Derby!

Since this is going to take a couple of months to get through, I figured we might as well get started sooner rather than later. (There's also pressure from the home office to get this underway before the Daily News steals this idea as well.) The competition between the 1962 and 2018 covers will, of course, have to wait for 2018 to become available, but all remaining matchups will be presented, starting Friday, in random order.

As with the Tabloid Cover Derby, each voting thread will remain open for seven days. Because we have a full slate (as opposed to the downsized 2017 TCD) new threads will be started on weekends as well as on weekdays. If all goes according to schedule, this should keep us busy until around the All-Star break.

Here's the initial look at our brackets. The people in Stockholm apologize for the tiny cover images, but promise that they'll get bigger in subsequent rounds as more space opens up.

I have to write a fictional interview with Ray Sadecki concerning the (not so famous yet) Sadecki Spot and I don't know where to begin, how to end, or what to say in the middle. Wow, looking at the more recent yearbook back covers it looks like they have steered clear of that custom.
I only had the 1989 and 1990 yearbooks down off the shelf. Just looked at the yearbooks for 2010 and 2011. Those have Mets/Citi Field ads. 2013 is the last I possess and that's an ad for the All Star Game at Citi.

I don't remember when the broadcasts stopped advertising the yearbook, particularly the opportunity to send a check or money order for a dollar-fifty (including postage and handling) to Shea Stadium, Flushing, N.Y. 11368 (which I did to obtain my first). Bob, Ralph and Lindsey showing it and talking it up made every edition -- with its suitable for framing team picture -- a must have for every baseball library. I doubt I would have made a beeline every year for the concession to get one had I not been so expertly primed to part with my 75 cents or dollar or whatever it rose to as time went by. Though I've dutifully laid down my cash for one every year of my sentient game-going life, they now feel part curio from another age, part orphaned from the entire Met experience. The announcers don't mention them. I don't believe there's any real push to sell them via PA. Like so much of what we are ingrained to look for as baseball fans, the yearbook is one of those things you wouldn't necessarily invent today if it hadn't been invented already.

Not of the yearbook, I don't think.

In 1969, 1973, and 2015, the World Series program had a Mets-themed cover. (And I assume, one for the Orioles, A's, and Royals for their home games.) In 1986 and 2000, there was a generic MLB cover for all post-season games.

I would have liked to have included the 1969 program cover (below) but that's not a yearbook. Maybe if we ever do a Scorecard Cover Derby.

Re: Introducing the Mets Yearbook Cover Derby!

We have our first poll closing. In Round 1.01, the 1989 Revised Edition ousted the 1990 Revised Edition by a vote of 10 to 7. (None of the subsequent polls, to date, have been nearly as close. The second through eighth polls are all heavily lopsided.)

These seven polls are still open for voting. The response so far for 1.07 (1979 vs. 2000) has been a little light. Judging by the vote count, there are probably four or five regular voters who have not yet chimed in.

Did the Mets wear the pinstripes for home games this spring, or those blue tops? Because the yearbook photos have Frazier, plus de Grom with short hair before they appeared in a game at Citi. Maybe some PhotoShop magic.

Looking through my yearbooks today, I noticed that most of the books I have from the 1960s are revised editions, and later learned that there were, in some years, multiple revised editions.

Does anyone know if there is a site with a definitive listing to which years had revised editions, and how many?

I didn't know about that change in the 2008 edition. Was that the last time there was a change in mid-season?

The 1988 revised edition is still grumbling over the decision in Stockholm to keep it out of the tournament.

"We had Shea on the cover, we acknowledged an otherwise unnoticed anniversary and we paid homage to Tom Seaver, yet we were not invited to participate, while the clearly unofficial 1992 bilingual 'yearbook' was given a berth. Something's fishy in Sweden, and it's not just Swedish Fish."

And both of those covers were winners in the polls that closed today. Two more polls have closed today. The 1968 Willard Mullin cover with the portrait of Gil Hodges defeated the silver 25th Anniversary 1986 cover, 12 votes to 5. And the 1971 action shot of Jerry Grote making a tag at the plate fared better than the similar John Stearns cover from seven years later. The 1971 edition knocked out 1983, 14 votes to 4.

Today two more covers advance, and two more are eliminated. In a clash of Shea Stadium images, the 1964 cover logs an 11-5 victory over the 1991 fireworks cover, and Mike Piazza's 2000 cover gets the better of Tom Seaver and his balls, from 1975, 13 to 1.

The 1999 cover was the last surviving entry from the 1990s, making that the first decade to be eliminated from this competition.

The decade the Mets let Old Timers Day and Banner Day wither and die. Seems apropos that the yearbooks wouldn't keep up with their predecessors.

Re: Introducing the Mets Yearbook Cover Derby!

The final two polls of the second round have now closed, and we have officially established our Sweet Sixteen.

In Willard Mullin's closest vote yet, his 1966 cover edged the 1987 Revised Edition (featuring a World Championship montage) by a vote of 9 to 8. Meanwhile, Bill Gallo's 1981 cover defeated the 2007 edition by a vote of 11 to 5.

The 1981 cover is the sole surviving cover from the Mets' best decade.

In addition to the Gallo cover, our Sweet Sixteen consists of seven covers from the 1960s. All six of Mullin's covers remain, plus the 1963 Mr. Met cover. The 1970s are represented five times, by 1970, 1971, 1972, 1974, and 1976. After 1981, we skip ahead nearly two decades. The three covers rounding out our group of sixteen finalists are from 2000, 2002, and 2011.

Nine of the sixteen covers feature artwork: The six Mullin covers, the two Mr. Met covers (1963 and 1976) and the 1981 Gallo cover.

Third-round voting begins tomorrow, Friday, May 18. None of the Mullin covers will face each other in this round, so it's entirely possible that Mullin's cartoons will be featured on six of the eight covers that will advance to the fourth round.

Re: Introducing the Mets Yearbook Cover Derby!

Third-round polls are beginning to close. Today, the 1962 Baby Met cover completes its comeback victory over 2002's Casey-to-Bobby cover. 2002 had had a 9-6 lead, but four late unanswered votes gave the victory to the toddler in the Mets cap.

2011, the only cover from the current decade to advance out of the first round, with a victory over the 1969 floating heads cover, has lost, 15 to 3, to the cover that celebrates that 1969 season. 1970 advances to the fourth round. 2011 will be eating shrimp in the loser's lounge.

1962 and 1970 will face each other next week, and the winner will advance to the Final Four.

I voted for 2002 because it was everything I could have wanted out of a commemorative cover (and I continue to be amazed the Mets pulled off something that savvy) but I'm not at all sorry to see the baby toddle onward.

Today's poll closings mark the end of the third round. We see another victory for Willard Mullin, but also his very first defeat. The 1974 N.L. pennant cover has bumped Mullin's "You're the Most" 1965 entry from the competition by a vote of 12 to 7. Mullin's 1966 "GO-GO-GO" cover, however, eliminated Bill Gallo's "Recipe for Mets Magic" from 1981, by a count of 14 to 3. Gallo's cover was the last remaining cover from the 1980s.

We're now down to eight covers. Our Elite Eight consists of five 1960s covers from Willard Mullin, and three covers from the 1970s: The championship celebration of 1970; the N.L. pennant cover from 1974, and 1976's Bicentennial Mr. Met.

Voting resumes tomorrow, Tuesday, May 29.

Somewhere inside Shea Stadium, March of 1971...

"You sure about the composition on this picture of Grote making the tag for the cover?"
"Doesn't matter."
"Whaddaya mean it doesn't matter?"
"This cover isn't as good as anything that came before."
"I don't know, it's pretty good."
"It'll never be as good, not this year, not any year."
"Why are you saying that? We were kicking around some good ideas last week that we can still use. The Four Mets Who Form a Puzzle is an evergreen. Every Met Who Was Ever An All-Star, if we get a couple more who qualify, is gonna sparkle. Oh, and when we win a pennant, I have a helluva concept!"
"Doesn't matter. We've peaked."
"How do you know?"
"I just know."
"So why am I applying Fun-Tak to all these baseballs?"

I know that this is a few months late, but it took a while to schedule the ceremony for the winning cover. (There was, as you're surely aware, a long-running shower-curtain-workers strike in Sweden that was recently resolved.)

The Yearbook Cover Derby champion is Willard Mullin's 1967 cover. The winning cover will appear on Maja's shower curtain for the next year! The ceremony was held in Maja's bathroom, and Steve Gelbs of SNY was on hand to join in the fun!

Thanks to everyone who participated, and again, we do apologize for the delay.
