Sixty-one guys piled into camp, and only one was going to come away with the John J. Murphy Award for Outstanding Rookie in Camp.
Yeah, OK, like three quarters of those guys were ineligible, but still, the guy who won it was me. Amed Rosario, Darryl Strawberry, Ron Darling and me.
Or, if you're a glass-half-empty type of guy, Mike Bruhert, Darren Reed, Garth Brooks, and me. But hey, Brooks may still break out.
I'm a throwback. I'm a third baseman who puts up a slash line that looks like what you'd expect from a thirdbaseman in the minors: .261 / .317 / .415 // .733. Good enough to keep around, get his promotions, but shouldn't expect a long career.
But the thing is that those numbers come with great RBI rates. Yeah, they tell me RBI is more of a team stat, but it's a team stat that has made me look good year in and year out. And it won me a Murphy trophy. And it's also gotten me to Vegas, despite TOS surgery, passing Jeff McNeil and Jhoan Urena in the process. So team-stat this. And tell me what's next.
