Mickey Callaway Hot Seat 2018

Ok, so no huge complaints, but a few nitpicks about our new manager:

1. Jose Reyes over Rosario? With the off-day and the likely snow, that's a lot of time for Amed to sit. Maybe sit him next week in Miami or something, but we need him out there on offense and defense.

2. Lugo/Gsellman yesterday. Sure, it's not a big deal with the offday today and snow for Saturday, but these innings pile up. What's the point of having Jacob Rhame if you can't pitch him with a 6 run lead? Let him get some innings. Let's see what this kid has.

It will be interesting to see how he handles the OF situation with Conforto back. With the lefty coming up, does he sit Conforto or Bruce in favor of Lagares? Or is that just our everyday OF now?

I wish Nimmo/Lagares could play second base.

I had a similar thought yesterday. They should be trotting out that last guy with a six run lead.

Amed throws out that second run by a half mile yesterday.

Re: Mickey Callaway Hot Seat 2018

Wasn't Rosario not feeling well a few days ago (or am I thinking of
someone else?) Maybe he's not 100% or something.

I'm probably wrong because the booth was going on about him not
playing too and they'd know who's sick and whatnot.

Oh, and 5-1 so let's not chase too many rabbits down holes just yet.

Skipping Rosario yesterday is the only gripe I have. Winning 5 out of 6 and getting some stellar work out of the bullpen makes Mickey OK in my book so far.

I do wish he would have had Bruce get some work in at 1B when they were in FLA.

Re: Mickey Callaway Hot Seat 2018

I'm skeptical about Reyes playing time, but I wouldn't have even signed him. But game 6. I need a larger sample of how he's actually going to use guys once things really get going. It's like a few years ago when everyone complained Conforto wasn't getting enough time and he finished the month near tops in PA anyway.

I mean, I'm sure I'll have gripes. I'm sure he'll use Bruce and Reyes too much and Nimmo not enough.

I think in some sense he's giving Reyes enough rope to hang himself. I'd like to see Zimmo or Conforto play first base, maybe.

I'm also bugging out at the frequency of use of the middle guys but godamn it's working. I donl't think anyone figured Gselly to be a stud with an 18 K/9

Mickey = MOY by a longshot so far.

Re: Mickey Callaway Hot Seat 2018

I think I wrote a few times this winter that I thought Gsellman could transition well kinda like Wade Davis. Shitty starter with great stuff that turns into a dominant reliever. Would be awesome if he keeps it up. The strikeouts are great, but if he gets three weak grounders every outing that's cool with me.

Mickey's gotta find a way to get Nimmo some AB's. Learn 1B or 2B, or 3B. Just get him in there.

I don't know if Rosario was sick or what, but Reyes got just 3 ABs in the first 5 games. I think Mickey wanted to try to get him going so he isn't a slug for the first 2 months like last year. Plus give Amed a day off against a tough righty.

I'm wondering if it being April and all the off days is a factor in those decisions. Hopefully he's not using them at that Pedro Feliciano rate when the schedule gets a little busier!

I was expecting to see Rhame in the ninth last inning. But for now anyway, I'll trust that Mickey knows what he's doing.

Re: Mickey Callaway Hot Seat 2018

It'd be nice to get Lugo and Gselly scheduled for alternate days, if they are both being deployed similarly with similar results. Sort of like Duaner Sanchez and Aaron Heilman.

If injuries don't arise, the way to get Nimmo into the lineup as the season is certainly getting Bruce some time at first. In the meantime, Conforto is probably not going to be an every-day guy for a few weeks.

I mean Lugo is (maybe?) going to start (Monday?). Seems like Vargas isn't quite ready last I looked.

The latest on Vargas (as of this morning) is that he still can't wear a glove and is expected to miss at least one more start.

I don't know if that means Lugo gets a start, or if the Mets instead stick with a four-man rotation because of days off.

So does just about anyone including Reyes nine times out of ten. That's not a play that one guy makes where the other doesn't. It was just a shitty throw at a time when even a mediocre one does the job.
I thought that was going to turn into one of those YUGE plays that we'd regret later as a factor in us losing the game.
Between that run and the one caused by Bruce's error, the Nats shouldn't have scored at all in the game and yet it was tied until the two HRs which turned out to be even YUGER.

I hear you guys. I'm at a loss too. My three starting outfielders are all lost at the plate. I got two outfielders on the bench, one is my best hitter, the other hitting .400, both are my best defenders. Frankly, if you have any ideas, I'm all ears.

Re: Mickey Callaway Hot Seat 2018

Not Mickey's fault that after Jake and Noah, the SPs have ranged from just OK to shitty.

Not Mickey's fault that Conforto hasn't hit at all, and it's May now and Yo and Bruce are just starting to hit.

Not Mickey's fault that Harvey is total garbage and is still on the roster.

Not Mickey's fault that Blevins sucks and AJ is walking 7 batters per 9.

Not Mickey's fault that we have 2 catchers who can't hit.

It's not Mickey's fault that Rosario looks overmatched and can't draw a walk.

Not Mickey's fault that we're desperately missing Swarzak.

Not Mickey's fault that despite a few timely hits, Adrian Gonzalez seems to have warning track power nowadays.

That said, it IS Mickey's fault Bruce hasn't seen an inning at first base yet.

And of course it's Mickey's fault that Brandon Nimmo is a rotting corpse on the bench.

It is Mickey's fault that he keeps using Blevo and AJ in high leverage spots. Try someone else. Ask Sandy to get help. They have big boy contracts, but remember how quick the hook was with Robles?

I think we need to ditch Harvey, send Robles down (or trade him for Realmuto) and call up Guillorme or someone, be prepared to give Matz or Vargas a spell in the pen or AAA. Give Oswalt a start? Flexen? SOMETHING SOMEONE

Well, screwing up the batting order and losing two of three to the worst team in the NL certainly isn't helping.

This was on Mickey win or lose.

He's gotta wake this 1-game-over-.500 team the fuck up and could stand to do so himself
