Excited for David Wright's return to the diamond today? I sure am!! Let's skip over Binghamton for a bit and visit with Dave's new teammates with the Mets' Florida State League affiliate.
David Peterson's beard has filled out and so has his upper body. The increasingly burly St. Lucie Met got touched a first inning dribbler of a hit down the third base line against Clearwater ... and that was almost it. The big lefty found his changeup and ended up going seven innings of two-hit ball.
The top pick from 2017 had started strong with Columbia, but lost himself a bit after his promotion to St. Lucie. But if that changeup stays in his arsenal, and he puts up more starts like this 11-0 thrashing of the Phillies affiliate — facing two batters over the minimum, striking out nine and waling bupkis — he'll turn into the terror the Mets envisioned.
Hey, who else is coming on strong? Well, infielder Michael Paez, a Round 4 pick from 2016, sure looked like a spear carrier in the the first half, going .249 / .316 / .363 // .679. Yeah, the five homeruns in 60 games was decent, but the bottom line was what it was. And what it was lacked luster.
But he's been a new Met in the second half, going .306 / .378 / .494 // .872, with six more homers in just 46 games. His month-by-month OPS suggest a young man finding his way:

Also making it big like WHAM! in the second half has been Lunchbucket adoptee Gabriel Llanes. Gabe the Babe had almost pitched his way into a release in the first half, going 2-7 with a 6.35 ERA. But the second half has seen a sweet turnaround, with the same person producing at the rate of 4-2 / 2.52 through 50 innings. The strikeouts haven't really been there, but his WHIP is down from 1.61 to 1.36 and he's totally keeping the ball in the park. So I'm guessing it's just been a matter of keeping the ball down when he needs to.
Last time I told you about Stephen Villines, his ERA was down to 0.63. Well, now it's at 0.41 and he still hasn't been called up to St. Lucie. ONE RUN in 22 innings so far, striking out 22 and walking six, giving up only 7 hits, and he STILL hasn't been called up to Binghamton. WHAT GIVES?!
Three other bullpenners — Joe Zanghi, Ryder Ryan, and Matt Blackham are rocking ERAs under 2.00, so when the Mets lead through five, things start looking pretty good in Florida. But there hasn't always been enough offense to even get them that far, so even after winning six of their last 10, the Mets sit 10 games out, in fifth place in the Florida State League South Division's second half. But they're only 2.5 games out of third.
They face Clearwater today with Joe Cavallaro on the mound. Giusseppe, like Peterson, started off really strong for Columbia, but has taken a little time getting his feet under him since a promotion to St. Lucie five starts back. Nonetheless, he's had a sterling worthy 10-3 / 3.25 showing across three levels so far, and that probably means bad news for Clearwater.
More importantly, there's a new guy at third and his name is Sugarpants. Nothing bad can happen when he's in the lineup.
