I went with 1991 and the fireworks. The baseball in front of the "window" on the 1989 cover is kind of dull, although it's nice to see the "Core Four" of Hernandez, Carter, Gooden, and Strawberry. 1989 would, sadly, prove to be a feeble last hurrah with the Mets for both Keith and Gary.

I went with 1991 and the fireworks, which also has a story behind it...

Back then they had a fan photo contest that they would publish in the yearbook. I had won the memorabilia category from 1989, and had my image published in the 1990 yearbook. I wanted to do something different, and headed out to shoot the fireworks with the Mrs. on Fireworks night in 1990. I met Marc Levine in the parking lot, who shot what ended up being the cover photo.

When my slides came back, I knew I had a great image, and that there was no way that I wasn't going to make it into the yearbook again. Then I saw the cover, and knew that there was now way they were going to publish my photo, too...

1991 is more aesthetically pleasing with the fireworks at Shea, understated for late 80s/early 90s font, and more featured players depicted.

The thumbnail action shots of the players in the 1989 cover are almost too small to engage with. The thumbnail action shots of the players in the 1991 cover are totally too small to engage with.

I went with 1989. The logo ball is a small inspirational leap that would rarely occur after this point.

Great story! Would love top see your shot!

I went with the fireworks. The other is just too bland. Nothing wrong with it. But nothing great, either. It's like when you have to buy a birthday card and go straight to the $1 section.

DWG used that image on his website 18 years ago, I remember it well. Cool story!

This is an easy win for 2 covers in the same era. they could have been any less imaginative in 89

I remember your fireworks photo well and even thought at first, on viewing here, that your photo was used on the '91 cover!
I'm looking at your memorabilia pic in the '90 YB. Very cool. Is all that shit yours?

I went with fireworks.

Re: Yearbook Cover Derby Round 1.06 1989 orig. vs 1991 orig.

The fireworks are striking. I would have made it the entire 1991 cover. Somebody must have decided, "We need to remind fans how good our players are." An unnecessary augmentation.

The 1989 cover was boring then and it's boring now. I don't think I noticed in 1989 that The Big Four were the stars of the show. I might have appreciated it a little more then. I appreciate it now, in a way, though I think I was disappointed in real time that they couldn't bring themselves to celebrate the 1988 division flag.

A vote for 1991, ten minutes before the franchise fell off a cliff.
