Re: IGT Wed Apr 11 Mets @ Fish

Oswalt sent back down to make room for Wheeler.
I'm not sure if he has to appear in a game, but I think being on a major league roster for one day guarantees him one month of the major league minimum salary (which is over $350 grand).
I'd be inconvenienced for one day for $50K, too.

Mickey has said that Lagares will get all starts against lefty starters. That would mean that either Bruce or Conforto would sit. (Or Cespedes, I suppose, if he needs a rest.)

Nuttin' yet.
Stayed in the game and ran the bases after the HBP, but then was PH'd for later that inning as his/Nido's slot in the lineup both started and ended the inning.
Bruise seemed to be dead-centered on the back of his hand and was already a lovely shade of purple before he even completed his trip around the bases.

Just getting here after listening on radio driving home. Guys in the booth were incredulous that Donnie Baseball gave the Marlins' pitcher the hook after 75 pitches.

They were noting that leaving him in wouldn't cost them the pennant, and the team could use something positive to excite the fans even a little.

Mattingly deserves a big share of the Schaefer for this game.
- he says prior to the game that, despite not being a starter, Garcia could go 90 pitches (he had pitched as many as six innings in relief) yet then pulls him after 77 with a no-no going
- he then makes wholesale defensive changes in a 1-run game with 2 innings to go which included yanking his one legit power hitter
- he opted NOT to make a double-switch when he brought in a reliever, but then DID make one later that same inning during a second change ... as if the key to the game was getting more than one inning and closing out a one-run game with Junichi Freakin' Tazawa
- and, although it turned out not to matter because they were left on deck and in the hole behind him, those hitters would have been Bour & Maybin (the only two on the team old enough to shave) except that both were double-switched out of the game in the top of the 8th!!

Based on his successes before this year, he must have learned his NL managing skills from Joe Torre.
He can deliver the gift basket to Jeter tomorrow morning.

X-rays on Plawecki's hand came back negative Wednesday, Matt Ehalt of The Bergen Record reports.

Plawecki was hit by a pitch on his hand during the eighth inning Wednesday. While he was initially able to stay in the contest, Plawecki was pinch hit for later in the inning when his turn came up again. Fortunately, initial tests indicate the backstop avoided any breaks in his hand. This is certainly a relief for the Mets, who lost starting catcher Travis d'Arnaud earlier in the day to a partially torn UCL. Consider Plawecki day-to-day for now; with an off day Thursday, he may not be forced to miss any action.

Re: IGT Wed Apr 11 Mets @ Fish

A few thoughts:

1. Was convinced throughout most of the game that this is when the streak ends. Some rookie lefty who has our number. On the same day that Travis gets hurt. Never really thought we might get no-hit until their SS robbed Wilmer in the 7th. Then it was like, oh shit. This might happen. Thrilled when we came back to win. This team is so much fun.

2. A couple of nitpicks. Would definitely have pinch run for Plawecki in the 8th. I never understood the "I can't pinch hit or pinch run for my catcher rule". I get it, that you don't want to get stuck, but it's the 8th inning and you need that run. Pinch run Reyes. Especially since Nido was likely needed anyway. Also, I would have preferred to keep Gsellman in for the second inning, but understand going with someone else. I don't agree with bringing in Blevins. Was that really necessary with a 3 run lead against the Marlins? I feel like with Jerry being the one lefty, we should try to skip him whenever possible. I know we have an off day, but Eric Thames and Bryce Harper are coming into town.

3. If we can't play the Marlins every day, can we just ask Mattingly to manage our opponent, whoever that might be? Love Donnie Baseball.

Re: IGT Wed Apr 11 Mets @ Fish

I feel like managers, even with the tying run on base, don't want to spend a player on pinch-running unless/until he gets into scoring position, seeing the advantage of having a fast guy on second to score on a single a lot more of an edge than having a fast guy on first to score on a double — which is exactly what we needed as it turns out.

I probably would have replaced him too. But it's a new world. Benches are short and you need all your players. Reyes was your ninth-inning pinch-hitter if the Mets don't win the game there.

If anything, Mickey probably would have had deGrom running for Plawecki, which probably doesn't give them much of an edge. Heck, after getting hit, Plawecki probably had an adrenaline rush to work off of.

Benjamin Grimm

Re: IGT Wed Apr 11 Mets @ Fish

1. Me too. But I was simultaneously counting on the Mets finding a way no matter how grim it looked. There are times in Mets history when I have a lot of confidence in their ability to do what it takes. This is one of those magical times. Though the stakes were much higher, and the circumstances not exactly the same, I was reminded of how Bob Knepper was dominating the Mets in Game 6 of the 1986 NLCS. And how the Mets won anyway.

2. I'm not sure if letting Plawecki run was about saving the catcher or saving the bench player. I guess he could have let Nido run. My guess is that Mickey was being stingy with making replacements because he only has a four-man bench. And yes, I would have given Gsellman the ninth inning. It seemed like overkill to use Blevins for one batter when there's a three-run lead and nobody on base.

When was the last time the Syndergaard / deGrom / Harvey / Matz / Wheeler rotation actually took the mound consecutively as an intact rotation. Was this the first time ever?

I expect it's the first time the team has actually ticked off five wins in a row with that rotation.
