IGT - 4/20/18 - Mets @ Braves

I think my lifetime IGT winning pct. is just a shade higher than Reyes's current batting average and my lengthiest winning streak ever peaked at around one, but nobody else has started one so here goes
starting with the NYM lineup vs the 2nd year lefty Sean Newcomb

Mets:
CONFORTO - CF
CESPEDES - LF
CABRERA - 2B
FRAZIER - 3B
FLORES - 1B
BRUCE - RF
NIDO - C
SYNDERGAARD - P
ROSARIO - SS

INCIARTE - CF
ALBIES - 2B
FREEMAN - 1B
MARKAKIS - RF
SUZUKI - C
TUCKER - LF
SWANSON - SS
FLAHERTY - 3B
NEWCOMB - P

Newcomb was a former 1st round draft pick (15th overall) by Anaheim back in 2014 out of the University of ESPN (aka: U of Hartford). He was dealt to Atlanta in the Andreton Simmons deal.
Simmons, btw, has been upping his hitting since heading west and now possesses an above stick to go along with his platinum glove collection.

Overall Newcomb is 5-10 to date in his short career (1-1 this season) with a 4.22 ERA in 22 starts since making his ML debut with the Braves last June in a game vs the Mets.
The Mets won that one then wound up splitting the games in his other two starts later in 2017.

I like how the names gradually shrink in length as the lineup progresses. Replace Syndergaard with, say, Jeff Tam, and Rosario with Chin-lung Hu, and we could have a vanishing point.

That sounds like something Tim Kurkjian would notice ... and then go research to see if it ever actually happened and if so how often and when was the most recent time.

And speaking of lineup patterns, to the best of my knowledge no one has yet tried to hang the moniker 'The Killer Cees' on the top of ours ... something for which I am quite grateful.

Or it could be a sign that Rosario is ready to move up in the order.

No Lagares against the lefty?

I'd sit Bruce.

Also, annoyed that I have to wait a half hour longer for first pitch.

Atlanta sucks.

The bottom of the order comes through for the gets the Mets. Nido singles, then scores when Rosario doubles. Sac fry from Conforto puts the Mets up 2-1 going to the bottom of the third.

Re: IGT - 4/20/18 - Mets @ Braves

Frazier walks, then steals second. Wilmer hits a rocket down the right filed line to drive in Frazier, but Markakis guns Wilmer down trying to get a double.

3-1 good guys going to the bottom of the 4th.

It seems that virtually the entire Atlanta line up is hitting .300 or better for the season.

Bruce misjudges a line drive which sails over his head for a double, costing the Mets a run.

Nido had to wait to see if that ball cleared the OF before taking off -- you could see via one angle that Rosario was around 1st before Nido even reached 2nd -- but that didn't stop 3B coach Glenn Sherlock
from waving Nido in anyway. As it turned out, the relay got away which both allowed him to score w/o a throw and for Rosario to reach 3rd ... which was a good thing because Nido would have been cooked otherwise.
I consider that send a mistake on Sherlock's part even though it all worked out in the end.

Re: IGT - 4/20/18 - Mets @ Braves

Yeah, I was surprised that they sent Nido since he had to make sure the Inciarte was going to catch the ball. I decent throw and Nido would have been dead.

As I'm typing this, Flores gets gunned down at the plate on an overly aggressive send by Sherlock. You have to know your runners. Nido and Flores are pretty slow.
Nimmo or Rosario you could possibly send there, but not Flores.

Re: IGT - 4/20/18 - Mets @ Braves

This send (of Flores) by Sherlock wasn't as bad given the situation [2 outs, lower part of the lineup coming up] but was another where even a halfway decent throw gets him.
This throw wasn't even mediocre but got him anyway (albeit by an eyelash).

It's tough to count on poor throws all the time.
And isn't this the second time this week that Wilmer has been thrown out at the plate?

That certainly won't last, and neither will at least some of these .300+ BAs -- I mean, Ryan Flaherty is a .222 career hitter for crissakes (more than 1,100 ABs) yet is currently leading the league in hitting.

I know it's a small sample size and early in the season, but it is an amazing contrast when compared to the Mets line up which has Cabrera (and Nimmo off the bench) hitting .300 or better. The Mets have several hitters hovering around the .200 mark.

Finally, a Mets catcher throws out a base stealer. Luckily, Flaherty is pretty slow and probably never should have been going there.

Wilmer is a thrown-out-at-3rd away from being thrown out for the cycle tonight.
- he grounded out in his first AB (out at 1st), was tossed trying to stretch into a double in the 4th (2nd), and later tagged out trying to score on Bruce's bloop (home plate)

Yup. Wilmer getting thrown out at 2nd when the ball caromed directly to Markakis in RF and then Markakis NOT being thrown out two innings later despite the shown beating him.

The 3rd one must have been a pickoff then, because the two by Nido were the first two times in 2018 that a Mets catcher gunned down a runner, as per Gary & Ron.

I saw stat a few days ago about opponents being 21 of 22 (or something similar) vs the Mets so I was going off of that, but I don't remember the circumstances of that one so, yeah, it was probably something other than catcher-to-second.

They haven't brought up anywhere near all their depth to the majors; the most talented player on their 40-man-- OF Ronnie Acuna-- is being held down at AAA for salary-control reasons. They've also got a couple of potential mid-to-late season impact starting arms there in Gohara, Soroka, and Allard. Even if the Cards-y grit they're getting out of the Preston Tuckers and Flahertys doesn't last... the Braves could be very, very real.

He was on his way to 3rd and had second thoughts, slid to a stop between the bases, then turned back and was tagged out. It was all very curious. Looked as though he didn't intend to hit the ground as a changed directions and that slowed him up. Also seemed like if he kept running to 3rd they'd have had little chance to stop him

The Mets played like crap all night. If they can win games where they play that bad, it's going to be a fun season.

It clearly looked to me that he got a stop signal from Sherlock. No angle that I saw showed Sherlock but Asdrubal saw something before using a slide nearly half way to 3rd to stop himself in order
to get back.
Not the greatest night of 3rd base coaching ever (several other incidents mentioned earlier in the IGT). Making the 3rd out at 3rd base wouldn't have been the worst move ever in this case and, like
Edgy says, I don't think there's even a throw (IIRC, the Braves botched the relay anyway). Just seemed like an odd time for Sherlock to get conservative considering how aggressive he's been otherwise.
