Having nearly 72 hours between a bullpen meltdown loss and the next game is pure agony for me (and as of this post, I'm only halfway through that amount of time).

This game may be historic if it's the debut of Matt Harvey, relief pitcher. Heck, even if he doesn't play, there are sure to be 1,000 shots of him in the bullpen, attempting to look serious and driven, but in fact projecting surly and lonely. Much Ron Darling reflection on the subject will occur as well.

I just have to say that I'm not terribly kahnfident that the Mets leave St Louis still in first place. Hell I wouldn't be surprised if they lose 2 of 3 nor is a sweep out of the question. Feel free to throw rotten tomatoes at me Friday morning if I'm wrong.

It could be the 1962 Mets playing the 2016 Cubs and a "sweep is not out of the question" would apply to both. The Mets are a good team, Jay Bruce aside, they could easily sweep them too.

That may be the case. But one team that won't be in first place on Friday is the Nationals, having fallen 7 games back in the loss column. One thing that hasn't been mentioned so far is strength of schedule. The Mets have played a lot of good teams early on. They've faced the top two teams in the Central, the top two teams in the East (other than themselves) and the Nats. Only the three games against Miami were against a bad team. Of their 20 games, 11 have been against teams with winning records. Another 6 were against the Nationals. That's 17 out of 20 games against quality opponents. On the other hand, the Phillies have played nine games against Miami, Tampa and the Reds. All crap teams. They also won 4 games against Pittsburgh, who, despite the hot start, is not expected to be a very good team. Starting today, they play the Diamondbacks. So the road gets tougher for them. What does all of this mean? Not much. LGM!

The Mets were roughly projected to finish 9 games behind the Nats to start the season. 20 games or so isn't enough to really change how 'good' or 'bad' a team is, but the Mets have enough games in hand now that even if those projections are accurate from this point forward, the Mets and Nats are now neck and neck. The Mets "make the playoffs" percentage is up to 55%. Winning is good.

I think the Mets have more chips on the table but that doesn't mean the ball won't fall on 00 and we won't have it covered.

I am the old man that Fman99 will be which means that I fell asleep after Yo's HR. I did get to see the final outs as a necessary walk was nicely timed to the bottom of the 10th. It would have been great if the ump told Matheny to go f himself instead of granting him a challenge that he no longer had. I enjoy the hour later. the 7:10 starts meld into bedtime routine stuff. Central time means I'm usually at least closer to huddling under the blanket waiting for Ceetarette to fall asleep watching on the stream. If I'm not playing Zelda anyway.

Dozed in an out the last few innings, I think I would have tried to stay awake if I thought they would win. When Harvey gave back the lead I thought we were done. A few random thoughts *Everyone will remember the HR, but that single by Bruce that gave us 1st and 3rd was huge. Great night for Jay Bruce. He still seems to be limping though. I think that the heel thing is still bothering him. *Wheeler starts are tough to watch. I mean, I like Zach. Seems like a good guy, very laid back, he has none of the issues some other guys have. And he has a terrific delivery. It's very fluid and fun to watch. But his starts are just torture. Deep counts to everyone. Tons of baserunners, and lots of hard outs. I think his stuff is just so straight he can't put anyone away, and eventually they hit it hard someplace. I don't know what you do with someone like that. I don't think he's a good candidate for the bullpen. Maybe he can learn to throw a sinker or something. *Adrian Gonzalez hit the ball hard a few times and has nothing to show for it. Not sure why this keeps happening to him. *Nimmo looked like poo during his AB. I fear that all the sitting has gotten him out of rhythm.

It seemed to me like Wheeler was mostly missing low. He wasn't scattershot or anything (which he has been), just not hammering that first strike in there. Gonzo may not be getting his hard hit balls through, but he had a sacrifice fly at the right time. Outside of Nimmo, he's probably the Met you go to when you need contact (maybe moreso), which is interesting, in that he wasn't a high-contact-rate guy when he was young. Still waiting on his first double as a Met.

I can't even remember the last time we won comfortably. The last few wins were in extras. We were behind in the Washington win until the 8th inning blowup. Both Brewers wins were 1 run games, and even the wins in Miami were tighter than you'd like. The last comfortable win was the Jay Bruce grand slam in Washington. Before that, it was just the two St. Louis wins to open the season.

MLB StatCast statistics are pretty interesting. Adrian's SLG % is just .360, but his expected SLG (based on exit velocity and launch angle) is a whopping .565. Only Nimmo has a greater difference between actual and expected SLG. Maybe there's more to come from Adrian yet.
