Okay, let's talk about Wilson Ramos

Here's what Laura Albanese of Newsday says:

The AL East will be an absolute dogfight this year, but one that the Rays probably won’t be a part of. Ramos is in the final year of his two-year contract, and it seems likely that the Rays would be willing to consider a trade that wouldn’t force the Mets to give up a ton. The eight-year veteran and former All-Star hit .260 last year with 11 home runs and 35 RBIs.

Serviceable. Only two years removed from an excellent season. Off to a horrible start, but that might lower the asking price. I wouldn't pay much, but I might not need to.

Now THIS is a rental I could drive around in for a bit.

The salary (mildly-prorated $10.5M) is likely a little hefty for Wilponian tastes. If this happens, we'll probably ask them to eat some of the salary, and send them someone of higher quality than we should.

Re: Okay, let's talk about Wilson Ramos

Ramos does not necessarily regulate Plawecki to the bench either, as Realmuto certainly would. Instead, it would just revert back to the original plan of a semi-platoon based upon matchups.

Re: Okay, let's talk about Wilson Ramos

Yeah that's a big point.
With Plawecki (hopefully) down for only a couple of weeks they don't necessarily need to find a starting catcher.
If his prognosis was longer and/or if this were later in the season (like trade deadline time) then it's another story and you can sort out the ramifications later.

Realmuto is a long term (almost 3 full years) solution. Doesn't mean you don't look into him but that's a different situation from just looking for someone to team up with Plaw

Real? Not real? We'll see. It's nowhere else online yet.

Re: Okay, let's talk about Wilson Ramos

Anybody confirm this?

While we're gobbling up old Nationals catchers, let's get Jesus Flores back.

I like this. (I may change my mind, however, once further details emerge.)

Re: Okay, let's talk about Wilson Ramos

Google News search isn't finding anything about Ramos to the Mets other than a rumor posted yesterday on "Rising Apple".

He's in the lineup tonight for Tampa Bay, so I'm guessing yeah.

Re: Okay, let's talk about Wilson Ramos

The New York Daily News -- which may or may not be as reliable as those guys listed above -- is reporting that neither the Rays (Ramos) nor the Red Sox (Blake Swihart) have received an inquiry
from the Mets on those guys.

Re: Okay, let's talk about Wilson Ramos

It makes sense. This doesn't strike me as a situation in which most GMs would move so precipitously, and certainly not Sandy Alderson.

Re: Okay, let's talk about Wilson Ramos

I disagree. The Mets catchers right now are automatic outs. Why wouldn't you make an inquiry?

I can understand not meeting their price right away if they want talent back, but I think you have to call both. (Disclaimer, I have no idea who the Boston catcher is)

Re: Okay, let's talk about Wilson Ramos

I wouldn't look into Wilson Ramos because of Plawecki's short-term injury. I'd look into Ramos because of d'Arnaud's long-term injury.

I think the Mets should make a move. And I think they will.

Exactly right. And if the rumors are true (and I acknowledge that they might not be) and the Rays are just looking for money without a lot of talent back, that's the type of move the Mets have to make.

You would, but the Mets tend to move deliberately. I think they'd probably like some time to assess their options.

As far as "right now" and "automatic outs," I wouldn't judge on a handful of plate appearances, but Lóbaton is certainly out-OPS-ing Wilson Ramos, who has gotten off to a glacial start.

Re: Okay, let's talk about Wilson Ramos

I doubt the Rays are necessarily desperate to get rid of him, nor do I think, despite what Laura may think, that they've decided they can't compete in the division this season and shouldn't try. (of course, a 4 game losing streak on top of a start is bringing that to a head rather quickly)

Re: Okay, let's talk about Wilson Ramos

Deciding deliberately is fine. Inquiring deliberately makes no sense.

The only way you can really assess your options is to know what they are. And if you haven't asked, you are simply speculating.

I would think most GM's would ask right away. And if the Mets haven't, I think that's a mistake.

We were also talking about Wilson Ramos last April.
