What's Happening in the Mets HOF?
batmagadanleadoff Apr 15 2018 08:23 PM |
What's going on in the Mets dinky afterthought of a Hall of Fame Museum that exists only because eff Wilpon runs this team in large part based on what the masses might gripe about? Is it still there? Anything new and interesting? Is the big inspiration still to replace the jersey of an '86 Met that was on display last year with the jersey, this year, of a different '86 Met?

Except for a couple of fairly recent artifacts swapped out for other fairly recent artifacts in the primary display case facing the salute to Mets ballparks, there is nothing new in there this year. More static than usual.

Anybody catch when the Mets were in St. Louis when Gary and Keith were talking about the Cardinals HOF? Gary mentioned how the Cardinals take their history seriously, and their HOF employs 2 people whose full-time job is to track down and acquire Cardinal memoribilia.

to be fair I don't think there's 100+ year old Met relics hiding in someone's storage unit from when they cleaned out grannies house but didn't go through.

I forgot I even started this thread. But yeah, "static" is the word that comes to mind when I think of the Mets HOF. The most disappointing item I ever saw there was an old Sports Illustrated featuring Ron Swoboda on the cover. The mag wasn't even in good condition, let alone mint. And it had a mailing label sticker, to boot. The HOF has taken on the vibe of the afterthought that it originally was. It's uninspired and lacks any imagination.

The Mets may not have a hundred years of history, but they do have almost sixty years of history. Their museum should have a serious curator who does whatever things a museum curator is supposed to do.

The Mets launched it with help from the NBHoFaM curators, which explains what they got right and what they got wrong. By turning it over to outside consultants, they treated it as an event, rather than an ongoing process. Regular visitors to the park deserve rotating exhibits and an evolving collection and presentation.

The Reds have a phenomenal Hall of Fame and Museum. It's in a separate building on the stadium grounds with changing and interactive exhibits.

I always loved that the font for the names on the back of Reds jerseys was seemingly 50% bigger than anybody else's. It also made for an impressive rainbow of identity for players with names like BILLINHAM, HOUSEHOLDER, or BERRYHILL.

It would have to be a long-sleeved jersey. You'd need to start the name at the left elbow and go all the way around to the other. Which reminds me that I haven't thought of 'Salty' in a while now. But he's not done quite yet ... still just 33 y/o (Today!!!) he played some winter ball in Mexico and is now plugging away with AAA Toledo in the Detroit system (5 for 18). Other than that I wonder who is now leading the league in a's? I also wonder if he finally got a better hairstyle. And I wonder if he's still married to his HS math* teacher? * Gym teacher now that I look it up, and apparently 'Yes' on the still married thing, 13 years and counting with four daughters to boot.

I'm surprised you never took the tour (there is no tour). At least in theory it's the ultimate trunkful of Mets junk. It's a very nice if small space and it is imbued with a foundational Metsian vibe. It just needs more -- more stuff, more thought, more dynamism. It's charming if you visit it once. It's relentlessly disappointing if you come back year after year.

yeah. I haven't come back year after year. Lately that's been because of kids, but even when I was still sneaking off to games alone occasionally the best I'd do is give it a walkthrough if I had a few moments and was going in that way. They should probably just gamify it. Rotating monthly exhibits, even if it's only one display case. Get a stamp/pin/token/baseball/something every month. Trade it in on the last homestand or in the offseason at the gift shop for a prize(package) a signed ball that fits the yearly theme. Maybe each month you highlight a 3Bman or something so at the end of the year you get a ball signed by like Ed Charles, Wayne Garrett, Hubie Brooks, Howard Johnson, Robin Ventura, David Wright and Todd Frazier or something like that. It's a unique grouping of signatures. Of course with a hashtag. Then you'd get constant social media presence of people instagramming their stamped card #MetsHOF and it'd get some visibility. I dunno, just a thought. They should really just hire someone to actually think about these things from that point of view. Of course, this is frequently the Mets problem, they throw a random answer at a problem rather than just dedicating resources and manpower to actually finding a good solution.

Because the Wilpons are cheap philistines. And now on top of that, you want them to give stuff away to HOF visitors? They're having conniptions as it is, because all that space and it can't be used to sell 15 dollar hot dogs and 50 dollar tee shirts.
|
Ceetar May 02 2018 06:43 PM Re: What's Happening in the Mets HOF? |
I want them to give away something fairly cheap to dedicated fans that have been there 6 times, presumably spending a ton of money. Given the "lets out into the gift shop" part, it's almost a given that just directing more traffic into the HoF earns them money, well more than they'd give away, especially if/when they sponsor the whole competition.

If it was about the money, theyd probably make more of it if that museum was instead, a retail space.

Thanks for finding that article. I remembered it but couldn't recall from where. Tina Mannix was announced as a member of the Mets Hall's reconstituted voting committee in 2010. As mentioned in previous threads, she (apparently) left the organization a couple of years later, based on her disappearance from the media guide listings and such. She must have been the museum and HOF's champion internally, a role that hasn't been effectively taken up by anybody else.

Kinda surprised too and I mentally chewed on it a bit this afternoon and now think I popped my head in early on and was so turned off by the crowd I decided to go back another time and never did. Then I forgot about it, kinda like the Mets? Will make a point of it, maybe Saturday, after the Mikkeller of course.
