Jerry Blevins Sucks

10 appearances, all to get a lefty or lefties out:

1: Fowler BB
Pham BB

2: Herrera -- popout

3: Montero - K
Difo K

4: Harper - BB

5: Harper (Rendon picked off, inning ends)

6: Bour - popout

7: Deitrich: lineout

8: Sogard: single

9: Shaw: Groundout

10: Harper RBI single

So excluding the one non-AB from Haper, that's 11 lefties, five have reached base. What kinda loogy is that?

Re: Jerry Blevins Sucks

He was money against the big lefties last season. He obviously has not been the same in this young season.

Re: Jerry Blevins Sucks

Blevins is certainly a candidate for regression. Especially considering his overuse last year.

I get your point about Ramos, but Ramos has been bad for a few years, while Jerry has been pretty consistently good, last year being a tick up. And even last year, Blevins was fine in his role as a LOOGY. 0.88 WHIP against LH's last year. I'd be fine if he could repeat that.

Re: Jerry Blevins Sucks

This is just a disaster for a LOOGY. More than half of the batters he's faced this year have reached base.

It's like Scott Rice all over again. Maybe a guy is just not supposed to pitch in 75 games in a year.

Re: Jerry Blevins Sucks

Very often, the walk is the failsafe for LOOGy. He comes in with big runners in scoring position, and a lefty threat at the plate, he goes with hard stuff up and in and big breaking curves away. Far better to walk the guy than give up a hit, so he tries to get the guy to chase.

Obviously, the walk is less than ideal, but the team is still afloat if it shakes out that way, so I get that there are going to be periods where guys get away from him. But single-single-walk-double, in a game that wasn't even close so you don't have to nibble, that's terrible.

Come on, Gordo.

Hey, that's what happens when you hire your friendly neighborhood accountant to be your LOOGY.

Re: Jerry Blevins Sucks

Maybe we will be seeing Abad at some point because of all this?

I'm can't say that I am an expert with regard to how overuse in one season carries over to the next, but maybe that 2nd loogy can leverage Blevins and (hopefully) the resultant decreased usage of Blevins can then salvage his season.

I also think that the absence of Swarzak is also playing a factor, as the word on him to the best of my recollection is that he can also get leftys out despite being righthanded. Getting him back could also better leverage Blevins.

Yeah, Ramos definitely got Swarzak's call last night.

I thought Abad never showed up. I liked Purke when I saw him this spring but would have no idea about his lefty-killness.

Don't worry, folks. I got this bullpen thing.

Re: Jerry Blevins Sucks

Blevins appeared in more games over the last two years as compared to any other season: 73 & 75 vs previous highs of 63, 67, 64 in 2012-14
but at the same time was well below his high in innings pitched, 42 & 49, and also batters faced, 178 & 217, compared to 65, 60, 57 and 261, 245, 240 (also 2012-14)

The bottom line is that he's sucked so far this season, but it's also a sample size of just 20 batters faced and I'd say it's questionable at best as to whether we can even treat the idea of "overwork" as a factor.

This is mean to say but his name reminds me of a noise you might make when you vomit.

Re: Jerry Blevins Sucks

I think the need for a lefty reliever is even more pressing than that of a catcher.

Ramos has 9 walks, but at least he's pitched 9 innings. Blevins has 4 walks in 3.2. And Blevins is giving up hits on top of it. I know, small sample size, etc., but he might continue to suck and/or get hurt.

Not sure Purke is our answer. 8.64 ERA and 1.92 WHIP in LV.

There's gotta be some scrap heap washed up lefty starter with a decent slider that we could try as a short man.

How many of those walks have been to Bryce Harper? We've played the Nats a lot, and he's the one brought in to face him. Sometimes a walk to him isn't horrible -- but, granted, you can do that by just intentionally walking him.

And by the way, I don't mean Jonathon Niese.

Can we teach Harvey to throw left-handed? That would solve *two* problems.
