Classic Rawk Quiz 2018!

It's been too long since we had a quiz. And while classic rock hasn't changed much since we did this last, we can take a new look at this. With the Mets now 8-1, we can look at 1981. What were you doing in 1981? For me, it was end of junior year, start of senior year at Berner High. Angst, heartache, minor victories -- you know the drill.

I stumbled on a Classic Rawk site that listed these as the top 10 albums of that year. I had nine of them -- and several singles from the other. Each comes with a story and a memory.

Guess the album, and tell us a memory. I'll post the website's description of the album and share a memory, too.

A good one that must have fallen outside the top 10!

I used to work at 300 Bowl with an older guy named Kevin. He loved Squeeze and would sing "Tempted" over and over to the point that Jimmy, and manager, would shout, "Will you stop with that stupid song!"

Jimmy was a bowling alley manager who hated bowlers. True story.

Moving Pictures!

How is the soundtrack of my youth not No 1? Flash ahead 30-plus years, and I'm staffing the recent boss on his visit to Toronto and meeting with Premier of Ontario. We jumped out of the SUV at a side door of a beautiful building that seemed oddly familiar. Driving away later I recognized it to be the COVER OF MOVING PICTURES!!! Now, it's a good thing I didn't realize this on the way in, or I would most certainly have asked the premier, governor and the counsels from both nations to pose and recreating the famous cover. I'm sure the premier would have been on board. She probably does that every day.

From the website:

Really, if the topics are "Rush" and "1981," then we should be talking about Geddy Lee's vocal performance, and impressive comedic chops, on Bob and Doug McKenzie's 'Take Off.' ("Decent singing, eh?" "Yeah, he's good!") But even the most fervent Rush-hater can't deny the power of 'Tom Sawyer' or 'Limelight.' How do I know? Well...

Holy moley, did this year suck a typewriter for rock music. Is 1981 the end of classic rock and roll, Rico? I'll go with Tattoo You, which for the most part, wasn't even 1981 music, but older unreleased Stones songs taken out of the dust bin and polished up a bit. First year without an active Led Zeppelin. That's how sucky this year was for rock music, that Tattoo You is a no-brainer top 10.

Boy do I wanna puke. Look at these records. They're hardly 1967's Sgt. Pepper, Disraeli Gears, Are you Experienced?, Surrealistic Pillow, The Doors' first two albums, Aretha's Atlantic debut and Mr. Fantasy.

From the site:

The punkish origins of this British trio were a distant memory by the time 'Ghost in the Machine,' their fourth LP and clearly one of the top albums of 1981, was released. Songs such as the irresistible 'Every Little Thing She Does is Magic' showed that Sting's songwriting had grown so sophisticated that he had nearly outgrown the band's mission statement. They'd stay together for one more even more refined album, the incredible 'Synchronicity,' and then it was off to the worlds of jazz-rock, lutes and orchestras for Mr. Sumner.

The last concert of the Ghost tour was at the Nassau Coliseum, and I snagged tickets right behind the stage. Not great, but you get to see a lot of behind the scenes stuff you don't normally get to see, and I like that kind of stuff. Opened with "Every Little Thing She Does is Magic."

This was the tour I saw the Police too, also from behind the stage, but at the garden. Good view of Stewart breaking his sticks.

They came out on stage to a recording of "Voices Inside My Head" played into it, then morphed into "Message In A Bottle."

From the site:

The frothy ballad 'Waiting for a Girl Like You' is the song your mother and everybody else will remember from this album, but if you're like us, it's the pulsating tale-of-rock-stardom 'Juke Box Hero' and the perfectly-titled, saxophone-charged 'Urgent' that earn this album a spot in our top albums of 1981 list.

I love 4. Junior Walker's sax solo in "Urgent" is worth the price of admission. Of all the "corporate rock" bands, I liked -- and like -- Foreigner the most. We snagged my first-ever floor seats fot this tour, standing atop our seats in the 25th row. Another performer from this list was the opener. The shirt purchased from a guy in the parking lot showed the "Head Games" cover. My mother was not really pleased. But she also knew that the life expectancy of a shirt purchased in the Coliseum parking lot was about 10 washings, she wasn't too worried. We survived the whole Candy-O shirt thing, so this too would pass.

From the site:

Van Halen's fourth album in as many years reportedly began life as an Eddie Van Halen solo project, but David Lee Roth and the rest of his bandmates joined in and helped create the group's darkest, most complex set of tunes ever. 'Unchained' was the only major hit, but over time 'Fair Warning' has been acknowledged as one of their best albums ever.

I went to a lot of concerts that year. Saw this tour at the Coliseum, too. I learned that if David Lee was more interested in jumping than singing, and if he manages two or three words in a verse, he's having a good night. I did get a lot of mileage out of "C'mon, Dave, Gimme a break" in "Unchained."

From the site:

The Stones dig through their closets for old songs and come up with a stone-cold stunning classic of an album. The A-side rockers, such as the rescued-from-reggae 'Start Me Up,' got most of the attention, but the flip side's sultry, dreamy ballads -- check out 'Heaven,' for starters -- are equally worthy of your time.

I'm going to be bold and say the last great Stones album. A friend went to the show at JFK Stadium in Philly and brought be back a tour shirt. I think Journey and one more big act was on the bill. This was a big dilemma, because purchasing the shirt was like proof that you went to a show and all the bragging rights that go with it. To wear a shirt without going to the show was breaking the unspoken rules about concert shirts -- and there are many.

That's 100% true but it was only a matter of time before a mall store, I forget the name, began stocking cheap black tshirts that looked like official or unofficial tour gear. That was some bullshit.

Concerts were also the biggest proponent of baseball-style shirts since baseball.

“Centerfold” was the song it was set to play in the upper level juke. (Phil Collins’ “You Can’t Hurry Love” was on the lower level juke.) There were a lot of times when things were quiet for are reason — people watching something on TV or something — and sure as heck that’s when you’d get the jarring “Waaa wa waah waah waah” opening notes, startling the snot out of everyone or pissing them off.

We grew to really hate that song. I can’t listen to it to this day. The Collins song was in a bigger room — out by the alleys — so the volume and start wasn’t as jarring. It still brings be right back to a certain time and place.

Thought of both Ozzy and the VH album, but, at the same time, neither of those had any really big hits. I also had the second Dio/Sabbath record in my head, which came out in 1981 and is better than both of those.

Good call. "Mob Rules" is excellent! "Diary" is good, but not quite as good as the first. "Fair Warning" is really good, though the cover give me the creeps!

The Beatles played at Shea twice, in August 1965 and August 1966.

Set lists in both cases are pretty short by today's standards, a dozen songs first and just 11 the second time. Can you name them? One at a time, usual rules apply.

No he doesn't. Baby's in Black is another repeated song, which I got right. I also already won this quiz because I can rattle off the Shea setlists like 1 ... 2 ... 3. You typewriter! So now what are you gonna do? Tattle on me? Tell the mods that I'm answering your quiz questions?. MODS: So whaddya want us to do? YOU: Can't you ban him? You don't need a reason. Youse already suspended him because he was posting about the way d'Arnaud cocks his wrists. Don't even warn him. Since when do youse need a sound reason to fuck him over?
