Kentucky Derby

For some reason this year I am really excited about it! Maybe because I’ve been reading Dick Francis books.

Anybody know what time it’ll start?

Generally all you have to do is turn on the tv at 6:30 and watch
for twenty minutes and you get everything one could possibly need
to know that they cram into a four hour show haha. (guesstimating)

I'll be at Shea, wonder if they show it on big screen.

no power in the parking lot unfortunately.

I think "What time is the derby" is one of those things SEO click-bait sites like Deadspin tend to steal because everyone is googling it.

Re: Kentucky Derby

Yes I finally found 6:50, but lots of earlier stuff. If it’s nice I’ll be outside all day :)

I predict that this year it will be won by a horse with a smaller-than-average human being on its back.

Who should I bet on at my neighbors' annual Derby party? I need to make sure I have good judgment before I get smashed on mint juleps.

Re: Kentucky Derby

I went to Churchill Downs for some races a few years back. It was the evening activity for a conference. It's in an odd location, and parts of it are kinda dumpy. It was a few weeks after the Derby, and they were still taking down all the temporary seating that goes up for the events. It was kinda cool -- like shipping containers converted into suites, stacked on top of each other. I got the impression that the vast number of permanent seats are empty except for Derby Day. But it was fun. We could walk up and get right next to the track and winner's circle. And, I won $10.

Your four hour guesstimate is close, but low.
My channel directory says the program goes from 2:30 - 7:15 in order to show us "the most exciting two minutes in sports".
yikes!

And that doesn't even count the couple of hours of coverage on the NBC Sports channel which preceded the 2:30 start-up of the NBC network coverage
So it winds up more like the least exciting nine hours in sports.
Plus, I still maintain that a Bartolo Colon triple is the most exciting two minutes in sports.

absolutely. I Want Him Back.

Damn near missed this after working in the yard and woods planting trees all day.

FYI, our supper will be Meatballs and Getty, as my grandson would say.
