SPOILERLY QUESTION AND OBSERVATION. Does Thanos eradicate half of all living things in the universe or only half of all the bipedal humanoids in the universe? If it's not all living things where is the line drawn for species that will be halved? Also, it would have been a funny twist if Thanos himself was one of the beings randomly eradicated. I almost thought it was going to happen when he was sitting there smiling at the end and I think he would be content with seeing himself start to turn to dust since his life mission is complete. It would set up an interesting sequel where instead of the plot being "Let's fight with Thanos for another 2.5 hours" it would be "Thanos is gone, how do we reverse all of this?"

My guess is that the intent was to eradicate half of the sentient life forms. It wouldn't serve his alleged aim of providing a merciful bounty to the survivors if he eradicated half the turnips and cocoa beans also.

I went to see it on Sunday night with my daughter, who is the big Avenger fan. We grab aisle seats because at some point in such a long movie I need to hit the rest room and refill the popcorn. But there wasn't a part in this one where I could do that. For a two-and-a-half-hour movie, that's pretty engrossing -- and impressive. We were disappointed by the absence of our favorite Avenger -- Hawkeye -- but assume he'll save the day in Part II.

But if Thanos-plus-Gauntlet is an all-powerful master of all he sees, why did he kill ANYONE? If the guy's aims were as self-described... why didn't he just magically double the amount of foodstuffs/cosmic lebensraum in the universe? This one felt exhausting just after we stumbled out of it, like the sharp jokes and precious character moments had just served as a leavening/delivery device for a superhuman amount of punishing stimuli. I appreciated the achievement-- for something with, like, 60 speaking roles and 3-4 plot streams, it certainly didn't feel as overstuffed as it could/should have-- but the more time passes, the less the plot/character motivations hang together in even a comic-book-logic way... which is nettlesome.

Yeah, it's hard to ask for in such an ensemble piece, but I wonder if the movie could have tried to focus on a single protagonistic point of view, sort of like the last Captain America (maybe the last two Captains America) were Avengers movies, but anchored in Steve's story. I guess the closest to a protagonist would have been Tony Stark, but it would have been terrific if it could have been built around Peter Parker, as a Skywalkerian fool stumbling into a Cosmic war beyond the wildest imagining of his young, provincial life, following the white hart into the woods, and trying to keep his head above water as he realizes he suddenly has a key role in a clash of gods.

Watched the three Avengers movies on the plane. They are pretty fun. I feel like with the campiness they don't take themselves too seriously. I find I'm missing tons of the story without having seen any of the other individual hero movies. Like Loki is a bad guy, then he's not. Not sure how Hulk ended up in outerspace. And I know nothing about the Guardians of the Galaxy.

I hope to be able to enjoy Captain Marvel when it comes out without having seen a single one of those movies. I liked it better than Superman when I was a kid. (Or will this not follow the original story line to introduce the character?) Later
