Wow, Vargas' ERA is plummeting!

Mets LH Jason Vargas (0-2, 16.20 ERA)
Reds RH Luis Castillo (1-4, 7.01)

I'm hoping that after the game, Vargas will have a lower ERA than Castillo.

Nice to see that Luis Castillo is still around!

If Vargas throws a complete game shutout, and the Mets score 3 in the first and Castillo is lifted without an out, they'll be tied at 7.89.

If we get a slightly more likely 6 scoreless from Vargas, that's 9.57. Castillo would need like 11 runs in 1IP. Or 10 runs in 0 IP, but that means Vargas would have to get a hit.

a fair few online bits - the timing was against any dailies picking it up. Might see some tomorrow. We tried to find a way to talk to him in the off-season for the magazine we do for the Dublin - Belfast train but I think we hit dead end or two and didn't really have the motivation to follow it up - must see did we actually talk to anyone or if it was just a editorial meeting chat.

The same could be said for Jason Vargas. As bad as Harvey was, I think he was better than Vargas and definitely had more upside. I think Harvey's his surly, prickish personality contributed to his departure.

That’s what happens when you judge a pitcher by wins instead of looking at other numbers like ERA, WHIP and age.

I've seen soccer dives look more realistic than Robles' "injury." Not complaining, mind you. Anything that gets him out of there.

Vargas' 2017 ERA would have been second-best on our team, I think. There were valid reasons to give him a shot. I don't think anyone could have predicted he'd be this bad.

Well, Harvey doesn't have a two-year deal, and has a longer trend line of failure.

Re: IGT 05/08 - NYM @ CIN - On the Road Again - 2

In all fairness, Vargas has been better far more recently, and consistently decent over the last few years (even in seasons when he has been injured).

I think Harvey's departure has far more to do with his inability to deliver in any capacity-- high-end performance, consistency, health-- in any role he's been given during the last two-plus years... and that he hasn't begun to resemble the pitcher he once was, or shown any sign of adjustment to changed circumstance, for that same time. He's been crap AND terrible at making/handling changes.

I guess it depends on what you consider decent. In 2017, he had an ERA over 4 and a WHIP right around the league average.

He was hurt in 2016, pitching in only 3 games (but was good in that small sample size). He was hurt in 2015 as well and only made 9 starts, posting similar numbers to what he did last year. 2014 was the last year he was healthy prior to last, and his numbers again, were right around league averages (3.71 ERA, WHIP of 1.273). The only stat that suggests he is anything but an average pitcher is the number of wins, which is why we heard so many times from the Mets that they signed "18 game winner Jason Vargas".

He was signed with the intent that he be a stabilizing, dependable part of rotation. But I look and see an oft-injured, league average pitcher, signed at age 35 to a 2 year deal.
