Organizational Sweep!

The New York Mets beat The Philadelphia Phillies last night, 3-1, on the strength of ninth-inning homers by Michael Conforto and Devin Mesaraco, cashing in on five relatively strong innings from starter Steven Matz and four innings of superb ball from the bullpen.

Meanwhile, later that evening, The Las Vegas 51s bested the Fresno Grizzlies, 8-5, behind Cody Asche's second homerun since joining a more righteous cause, and four RBI. One and 2/3 scoreless innings from future-Met Tim Peterson saved the evening.

What was happening up in Maine, you ask? Why, that's where the visiting Binghamton Mets took down the host Portland Sea Dogs, 6-1. Andrew Church returned from DL with his best start of the year, going six and 1/3 without allowing a single Sea Dog to score, striking out six, walking one, and yielding only four hits. Two walks and a double led to three RBI for Jeff McNeil, while Tim Tebow went 3-5, striking out but once.

Let's go to Florida! Down in the Sunshine State, your St. Lucie Mets walloped the Lakeland Flying Tigers 11-2, behind a 16-hit attack, including three each from Desmond Lindsay, Luis Carpio, Anthony Dimino, and Ian Strom. Lindsay, showing some of his first-round merits this week, hammered two doubles and a triple.

And our journey finishes in The South Atlantic League, where The Columbia Fireflies lit up the Hickory Crawdads, 8-3. Standford Swingers Quinn Brodey and Matt Winaker led the way with three hits, including a double and a homer between them. Catcher Scott Manea continued his breakout season with two more hits and a walk, and reliever Steven Villines put up a showcase of an outing, getting seven mid-game outs, six on strikeouts.

I don't know if it's the first organizational sweep of the year, but it's the first I've found, and it made for a sweet Friday night.

Re: Organizational Sweep!

The New York Mets ... had the day off!

Off in the west, P.J. Conlon made a strong return to the PCL, as The Las Vegas 51s outslugged the Tacoma Raniers, 8-3. Six of the 10 Vegas hits went for extra bases, including two doubles among Dominic Smith's three hits. The bullpen brigade of Kevin McGowan, Logan Taylor, and Tim Peterson totaled 3 1/3 scoreless and hitless innings innings, giving up but 2 walks while striking out 7.

As reported earlier this morning, the red-hot Binghamton Rumble Ponies obliterated their New Hampshire opposition, 11-1. Every Bingo starter had at least one hit (even if Tim Tebow needed five at-bats and four strikeouts to join the club). Jeff McNeil paced the offense at 4-for-6 with a homer and 4 RBI, while Nabil Crismatt got back in the groove on the mound, going 6 innings and giving up 1 run on 3 hits, walking 3 and striking out 7.

Your St. Lucie Mets had two games scheduled today against the Florida Fire Frogs. Both were washed out!

And so we land in The South Atlantic League, where The Columbia Fireflies outlasted the Charleston RiverDogs in a heated pitching battle, 2-1. Tony Dibrell was excellent, holding the Dogs to a single run on 4 hits through 7.0 innings, striking out 7 and walking 4, before the Flies finally broke through in the top of the eighth on an RBI triple by Edgardo Fermin, who then scored the go-ahead on a double by Raphael Gladu. Conner O'Neil and Stephen Villines could scarcely have been more efficient in finishing off the game, pitching perfect ball over the final two frames, striking out five of the six batters they faced.

A foreshortened sweep today!

The New York Mets ... had the day off!

The Las Vegas 51s ... didn't wanna go to work!

The Binghamton Rumble Ponies ... were not inclined! Work was the last thing on their mind!

So this story begins with The St. Lucie Mets! Driving to Tampa in an El Dorado Grand, the Lucies matched up with their Yankee-affiliated opponents, and Justin Dunn was sublime. A wonder! An angel! Justy went seven innings, yielding no runs and just two hits. He walked one, struck out 10, and hit a batter, defusing the closest thing to a rally by striking out Hoy Jun Park with two on in the seventh.

Dunn knows Jacob deGrom's pain though, and his team failed to break through until a single run the seventh, which was given right back by the pen in the bottom of the seventh. So it remained until the 10th when St. Lucie was given a free runner on second base, which they exploited to the tune of five runs home. Your final was Mets 6, Yankees 2.

The Columbia Fireflies ... practiced trumpet all day long!

And that would be all the organizational action ... up until two days ago! I tend to forget, but the Dominican Summer League starts a week or so earlier than the other short season leagues, as they don't have to wait for draft choices to round out their roster.

The DSL Mets 1 opened with five in the top of the first and cruised against their Angels counterparts. They ultimately scored 15 runs on just 10 hits, none of which left the park. "How do you pull that trick?" you may ask. Well you may! I say, it helps when the opposition not only walks 10 of your batters, but commits 6 errors on top of that! Second baseman Juan De La Rosa led the assault going 1-1 with a triple and 3 walks. He was replaced mid-game in the cleanup spot by leftfielder Julio René, who himself went 2-2 with two doubles, that's a total of 3-3 with 2 doubles, 1 triple, 3 walks, 3 runs and two rbi out of the fourth spot in the batting lineup. Can't ask for much more than that. The recently signed Joshua Corneilly was the last and best of a long line of pitchers, throwing 1 2/3 hitless, scoreless innings. Your final is Mets 15, Angels 6

Lastly The DSL Mets 2, who had the best winning percentage in the system last year, extended their 2018 record to 2-0, scoring 11 runs on 12 hits, helped along by — get this — 6 errors from the opposition. SIX! Leadoff hitter Felix Valerio helped the Mets dig out of an early 6-0 hole with the first Dominican homer for the Mets in 2018, and #2 hitter Federico Polanco went 4-5 with a triple, 3 runs, and 2 RBI. Antonio Villalba stopped the early bleeding with 2 1/3 shutout innings, but Jefferson Escorcha pitched the ninth, earning the save and the cool name award. Your final is Mets 11, Diamondbacks 9.

Re: Organizational Sweep!

Besides, you can't help but be encouraged by that Justin Dunn start. Mets Roster Central is predicting a mid-season promotion to Binghamton.

I also failed to mention that win included a two-homer game from baby-faced top prospect Andres Gimenez.

Local kid. Easy to root for. See this article from earlier this year:

https://nypost.com/2018/04/20/mets-pros ... aying-off/

2.36 ERA, 1.27 WHIP, 51 strikeouts in 45.2 innings. Walks a few batters, but seems to be doing much better than last year.
