Roster Notes 2018
G-Fafif May 16 2018 05:49 PM |
With Jerry Blevins on paternity leave, Paul Sewald becomes the Mets' reigning active roster iron man, having held his spot without interruption since May 1, 2017. Wilmer Flores was activated from the DL two days later and hasn't been off the roster since, though he was out most of September last year when he fouled a ball off his face, but space allowed him to stick around on paper.
G-Fafif May 19 2018 05:22 AM Re: Roster Notes 2018 |
We're 40 games in and only 12 Mets from Opening Day have been active for all 40 games.
G-Fafif May 19 2018 06:05 PM Re: Roster Notes 2018 |
Chris Flexen and Tomas Nido have been recalled.
RealityChuck May 19 2018 06:35 PM Re: Roster Notes 2018 |
I was surprised at first they were bringing up Nido; he's not major league ready.
bmfc1 May 19 2018 08:40 PM Re: Roster Notes 2018 |
Agreed. Wouldn't Nido be better served by playing in 3 out of 4 games rather than sitting out 3 out of 4 games?
G-Fafif May 19 2018 10:23 PM Re: Roster Notes 2018 |
Callaway says they want Nido to apprentice under Mesoraco, who is apparently a state of the art professional catcher in their view. They're expecting Plawecki back in 7-10 days.
Frayed Knot May 19 2018 10:29 PM Re: Roster Notes 2018 |
Yeah, that they opted for Nido over the 33 y/o Lobaton isn't a surprise. That they picked this particular shy-on-OFs moment to do so doesn't have an obvious cause but it gets Nido a few more weeks of ML play
G-Fafif May 29 2018 05:37 PM Re: Roster Notes 2018 |
We're down to 10 Mets who've been on the active roster every day of 2018:

Holy fuck. On all counts.

seawolf17 May 29 2018 05:44 PM Re: Roster Notes 2018 |
But hey! We've still got Healthy Jose Reyes!

Yeah, anyway...
G-Fafif May 29 2018 07:14 PM Re: Roster Notes 2018 |
Anthony Swarzak has alighted with the 51s.
G-Fafif May 29 2018 07:29 PM Re: Roster Notes 2018 |
Conlon optioned, Bautista sticks around.
G-Fafif May 30 2018 08:40 PM Re: Roster Notes 2018 |
Let's see...as reported, Baumann, Copeland and Peterson are here. Evans and Rhame were optioned. Since they were a man short with Thor's DL'ing, that's 25.
G-Fafif May 30 2018 08:41 PM Re: Roster Notes 2018 |
The bench tonight is Conforto, Reyes, Mesoraco and that's it.
G-Fafif May 30 2018 08:43 PM Re: Roster Notes 2018 |
Matz's deal called slight finger strain; "could make next start," per reports.

Edgy MD May 30 2018 08:45 PM Re: Roster Notes 2018 |
The addiction to relief is maddening. Somebody has to hit for those guys!

Ashie62 May 30 2018 09:58 PM Re: Roster Notes 2018 |
Conlon dfa'd
G-Fafif May 30 2018 10:34 PM Re: Roster Notes 2018 |
And Lagares to 60-day DL.
G-Fafif Jun 01 2018 07:21 PM Re: Roster Notes 2018 |
Lobaton reported back with the Mets and Copeland's locker reported empty. Mesoraco's concussion protocol apparently OK because he's tonight's cleanup hitter. Lobaton would have to be added to the 40-man to give the Mets an extra bench player (Lobaton) who would double as catching insurance.
G-Fafif Jun 01 2018 07:28 PM Re: Roster Notes 2018 |
Sure enough, Lobaton officially back, yeoman Copeland DFA'd.
G-Fafif Jun 01 2018 08:26 PM Re: Roster Notes 2018 |
Callaway says he plans to start Plawecki at first on Saturday to make the lineup more righthanded, so having Lobaton gives him a little more flexibility off the bench, or something along those lines.
Frayed Knot Jun 01 2018 08:47 PM Re: Roster Notes 2018 |
I had a suspicion they'd call up Lobaton (or Nido) if for no other reason than to allow the non-playing half of Mesowecki (rolls off the tongue better than Plawraco) to PH more freely.
RealityChuck Jun 01 2018 09:06 PM Re: Roster Notes 2018 |
Must be figuring that since Lobaton wasn't claimed the last time he was DFA'd, he won't be claimed this time, either.
Frayed Knot Jun 01 2018 09:10 PM Re: Roster Notes 2018 |
Plus Evans hasn't been down long enough to re-float him up to the majors (until tonight's injuries are tallied) so the hitting choices were rather limited anyway.
G-Fafif Jun 02 2018 08:52 PM Re: Roster Notes 2018 |
Dodgers claim P.J. Conlon, assign him to Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Hello Todd.
41Forever Jun 05 2018 07:24 PM Re: Roster Notes 2018 |
I was thinking that Frazier's return might be the end for Reyes. Then Wilmer got hurt. Given the way things go for us, someone else will be hurt before Wilmer returns. Reyes is like a remora fish that you see attached to sharks. They suck, they do damage to the host, but they're always hanging on.
G-Fafif Jun 08 2018 08:10 PM Re: Roster Notes 2018 |
We're down to eight Mets from the Opening Day roster being active every day of 2018.

den dekker should also be a relief pitcher.
G-Fafif Jun 19 2018 10:27 PM Re: Roster Notes 2018 |
Kelly was apparently unavailable because Vegas was playing a day game (like that's the Mets' problem?).
bmfc1 Jun 20 2018 12:56 PM Re: Roster Notes 2018 |
Since the Mets are stuck with Vargas for this year and next year, sorry, that was rude, he is under contract for this year and next year, if Noah ever returns perhaps Vargas could go to the bullpen as Blevins is "struggling" and it would give them another left-handed reliever.
Vic Sage Jun 20 2018 05:45 PM Re: Roster Notes 2018 |
With Lugo continuing to pitch well in the rotation, i do think Vargas is the odd man out once Thor gets back, regardless of his contract. But there is no reason to think he'll be any more effective in the pen. He'll likely just sit there and only get used in blowouts and as an extra spot starter, not as a "situational lefty" to make up for Blevins.
John Cougar Lunchbucket Jun 20 2018 06:02 PM Re: Roster Notes 2018 |
Don't look now but Reyes is getting hot! Last 6 games he's batting .500 (3-6) with 2 walks, a double and 4 runs scored.
seawolf17 Jun 20 2018 07:21 PM Re: Roster Notes 2018 |
HURRY UP TRADE HIM
Vic Sage Jun 20 2018 07:30 PM Re: Roster Notes 2018 |
our "hot streak" is comprised of winning 3 out of our last 4, where we've score 5+ runs in each game. During that stretch Reyes has contributed an 0-1, 1-3 (+bb), 0-1, and 0-0 (+bb), so i'd say his contributions had very little to do with our fuego-ness, such as it is.
John Cougar Lunchbucket Jun 20 2018 08:02 PM Re: Roster Notes 2018 |
you overlooked my Sarcasm score. But, we don't have the big win Sunday without his hotness!
smg58 Jun 20 2018 10:41 PM Re: Roster Notes 2018 |
His platoon splits have never been noteworthy. I do think he's not 100% yet, so pitching fewer innings here would do him more good long-term than pitching more innings in Vegas. Plus, he couldn't be worse than a few of the Mets' relievers.
I'd actually like to see Guillorme get more at bats. He's supposed to be a plus-plus defender, and our defense is flat out bad right now. Plus, a .196 BABIP has to improve, right? I'm encouraged by Peterson so far. Smith has also been holding his own in Vegas, which is good enough for a shot in the back of this bullpen. regarding Robles: what type of ants are we talking?
G-Fafif Jun 20 2018 11:15 PM Re: Roster Notes 2018 |
Robles to Vegas, Flexen to Denver.
MFS62 Jun 21 2018 01:13 AM Re: Roster Notes 2018 |
My major concern with moving Vargas to the bullpen is that he will pitch in later innings, thereby giving the offense less time to get back the runs he gives up.

I assume you mean don't count elbows before they bark -- or perhaps there's a six-foot-six mystery infielder to whom you're referring.
Edgy MD Jun 22 2018 12:06 PM Re: Roster Notes 2018 |
Yeah, the elbow thing.
G-Fafif Jun 22 2018 01:52 PM Re: Roster Notes 2018 |
If he needs to go on the DL immediately, the Mets will wait a few days.
seawolf17 Jun 22 2018 02:01 PM Re: Roster Notes 2018 |
Yeah, you don't want to rush into these things. Better to wait it out and play shorthanded, then pinch-hit him on, say, Monday to find out it's really injured and reset the ten-day clock. I'm sure Swarzak or Gsellman can play second for a few innings if need be.
G-Fafif Jun 22 2018 02:03 PM Re: Roster Notes 2018 |
Is that what can Swarzak can do? I'd already eliminated pitching.
seawolf17 Jun 22 2018 02:18 PM Re: Roster Notes 2018 |

Hey, if you take away those games where he gave up runs, he's got a 0.00 ERA.

Edgy MD Jun 22 2018 02:20 PM Re: Roster Notes 2018 |
I feel like we've been watching those few days. Perhaps for a couple of weeks.
Vic Sage Jun 22 2018 06:04 PM Re: Roster Notes 2018 |

well at least they took my suggestions on Kazmarski and Drew Smith. I'm anxious to see Smith; he's the guy we got for Duda and he could be the one RPer (of the many we got) from our late season dump fest that could be for real.
RealityChuck Jun 22 2018 08:18 PM Re: Roster Notes 2018 |
So how will Drew Smith be billed on the back of his uniform? "Smith" is already taken and "DSmith" creates confusion. "Drew"? "Drew Smith?" "The Guy WE Got for Duda"?
Edgy MD Jun 22 2018 08:30 PM Re: Roster Notes 2018 |
Sadly, the Mets (and most teams) no longer provide distinguishing initials or other information when two players share one surname. We had two Bautistas at once last month and nobody gave a shit. I thought it was disgraceful.
G-Fafif Jun 22 2018 10:32 PM Re: Roster Notes 2018 |
I had hoped an enterprising photographer would gather Bautista, Lobaton and Reyes for a Jose, Jose, Jose picture for the 2019 yearbook, though I don't expect any of them will be here by then. But maybe THE SMITH BROTHERS.
G-Fafif Jun 22 2018 10:34 PM Re: Roster Notes 2018 |
Drew Smith: 62, presumably his way of saying, "I am an Original."
G-Fafif Jun 23 2018 02:09 PM Re: Roster Notes 2018 |
Come to think of it, the Mets harbored two Smiths in 1964: Dick and Charley, each of them a major contributor to the legendary "did they win?" 19-1 romp at Wrigley Field that season. No need for distinguishing initials that season, given the mores of the times.
MFS62 Jun 23 2018 09:16 PM Re: Roster Notes 2018 |
But they did use middle initials when they had two pitchers named Bob Miller, but I don't recall if they were on the uniforms. Later
Edgy MD Jun 23 2018 10:53 PM Re: Roster Notes 2018 |
There were no names on backs in those days.
G-Fafif Jun 25 2018 01:52 PM Re: Roster Notes 2018 |
Reliever Tyler Bashlor reportedly on his way for tonight's game.
Edgy MD Jun 25 2018 01:58 PM Re: Roster Notes 2018 |
Tyler Bashlor: career 1.000 batting average. That can't be under-emphasized in Mickey Callaway's "Get relievers as many at-bats as you can" regime.

seawolf17 Jun 25 2018 02:35 PM Re: Roster Notes 2018 |

Crikey. Your reminder that the record for most pitchers used in a season is 40. Bashlor would be #25. I can't wait until some crazy offseason quiz here in the Pool in 2022 when Greg guesses "Chris Beck and Tyler Bashlor" to a trivia question and we're all like "no, you totally made those guys up."

Edgy MD Jul 11 2018 07:27 PM Re: Roster Notes 2018 |
That's one more for the recidivist list. And I guess one can make a technical argument for Conlon as a recidivist Met too.
G-Fafif Jul 11 2018 08:09 PM Re: Roster Notes 2018 |
We will accept Conlon in the satellite group that includes Terry Leach, Mike Birkbeck and Pedro Feliciano (twice) -- their stay as Mets interrupted by time in at least one other organization without having played for another MLB team in the interim. Conlon's asterisk is even fainter given that he never played in the minors for the Dodgers, either, but he did go out for that smoke.
G-Fafif Jul 11 2018 08:09 PM Re: Roster Notes 2018 |

Conlon optioned to accommodate the reThorization of the rotation.
bmfc1 Jul 14 2018 02:36 PM Re: Roster Notes 2018 |
It looks like a few teams are taking advantage of the All-Star break to add a bench player or another RP by sending SPs to the minors (e.g. STL did that with Luke Weaver who pitched on Wednesday and therefore won't pitch again until after the break). Could the Mets do that? They can't send down deGrom because it might impact his ASG status. Noah? Wheeler after today? It's likely not a big deal but if you can add a 3d catcher or really anyone who could be useful perhaps you should try.
