Roster Notes 2018

May 16 2018 05:49 PM

With Jerry Blevins on paternity leave, Paul Sewald becomes the Mets' reigning active roster iron man, having held his spot without interruption since May 1, 2017. Wilmer Flores was activated from the DL two days later and hasn't been off the roster since, though he was out most of September last year when he fouled a ball off his face, but space allowed him to stick around on paper.

We're 39 games in and only 13 Mets from Opening Day haven't budged.

Chris Flexen and Tomas Nido have been recalled.

Jose Lobaton has been DFA'd.

Re: Roster Notes 2018

I was surprised at first they were bringing up Nido; he's not major league ready.

But I suspect they're DFAing Lobaton to clear room on the roster. They'll need another outfielder if Lagares is out.

Though why they don't just put Lagares of the 60-day DL is hard to figure.

Re: Roster Notes 2018

Agreed. Wouldn't Nido be better served by playing in 3 out of 4 games rather than sitting out 3 out of 4 games?

G-Fafif

Re: Roster Notes 2018

Callaway says they want Nido to apprentice under Mesoraco, who is apparently a state of the art professional catcher in their view. They're expecting Plawecki back in 7-10 days.

Also, the Lobaton galaxy of stars proved decidedly less than stellar. Mickey didn't say that. He didn't have to.

Re: Roster Notes 2018

Yeah, that they opted for Nido over the 33 y/o Lobaton isn't a surprise. That they picked this particular shy-on-OFs moment to do so doesn't have an obvious cause but it gets Nido a few more weeks of ML play
under a veteran influence before settling back in as the Vegas catcher while Plawecki & Mesoroco cover the ML side.

Re: Roster Notes 2018

Lobaton reported back with the Mets and Copeland's locker reported empty. Mesoraco's concussion protocol apparently OK because he's tonight's cleanup hitter. Lobaton would have to be added to the 40-man to give the Mets an extra bench player (Lobaton) who would double as catching insurance.

Since the Mets are stuck with Vargas for this year and next year, sorry, that was rude, he is under contract for this year and next year, if Noah ever returns perhaps Vargas could go to the bullpen as Blevins is "struggling" and it would give them another left-handed reliever.

Re: Roster Notes 2018

With Lugo continuing to pitch well in the rotation, i do think Vargas is the odd man out once Thor gets back, regardless of his contract. But there is no reason to think he'll be any more effective in the pen. He'll likely just sit there and only get used in blowouts and as an extra spot starter, not as a "situational lefty" to make up for Blevins.

Meanwhile, we should release Reyes and Bautista, and send Guillorme down, and bring up McNeil, Kelly and an OFer (Borenstein, Kazmarski, denDekker or Brentz). as for the bullpen, Its time for Drew Smith to join Tim Peterson in Flushing, while Robles is staked on a field of ant hills.

Re: Roster Notes 2018

our "hot streak" is comprised of winning 3 out of our last 4, where we've score 5+ runs in each game. During that stretch Reyes has contributed an 0-1, 1-3 (+bb), 0-1, and 0-0 (+bb), so i'd say his contributions had very little to do with our fuego-ness, such as it is.

And maybe you think he's poised for another hot second half, based on his 3-6 over 6 games. I don't. I think we're more likely to catch lightning in a bottle with McNeil. But either way, the team's future depends more on learning about McNeil rather than giving Reyes more ABs or (god forbid) innings in the field.

His platoon splits have never been noteworthy. I do think he's not 100% yet, so pitching fewer innings here would do him more good long-term than pitching more innings in Vegas. Plus, he couldn't be worse than a few of the Mets' relievers.

Vic Sage wrote:

I'd actually like to see Guillorme get more at bats. He's supposed to be a plus-plus defender, and our defense is flat out bad right now. Plus, a .196 BABIP has to improve, right?

I'm encouraged by Peterson so far. Smith has also been holding his own in Vegas, which is good enough for a shot in the back of this bullpen.

Drew Smith and Kevin Kaczmarski setting their watches to EDT.

With Sewald's demotion, the Met who has the longest continual run on the active roster is Asdrubal Cabrera, available for every game since June 23, 2017. He IS POISED TO CELEBRATE his viability anniversary on Saturday.

As of Friday night, six Mets will have remained active for every game of 2018: Cabrera, Rosario, Reyes, Gsellman, Lugo and Matz.

Yeah, you don't want to rush into these things. Better to wait it out and play shorthanded, then pinch-hit him on, say, Monday to find out it's really injured and reset the ten-day clock. I'm sure Swarzak or Gsellman can play second for a few innings if need be.

Come to think of it, the Mets harbored two Smiths in 1964: Dick and Charley, each of them a major contributor to the legendary "did they win?" 19-1 romp at Wrigley Field that season. No need for distinguishing initials that season, given the mores of the times.

Other Mets who have checked into motels under fake names: Pete Smith, Joe Smith.

Re: Roster Notes 2018

We will accept Conlon in the satellite group that includes Terry Leach, Mike Birkbeck and Pedro Feliciano (twice) -- their stay as Mets interrupted by time in at least one other organization without having played for another MLB team in the interim. Conlon's asterisk is even fainter given that he never played in the minors for the Dodgers, either, but he did go out for that smoke.

Assuming the starting lineup isn't a practical joke, tonight will make it 576 regular-season Mets games between Mets appearances for Matt (591, counting the Mets' fifteen den Dekkerless postseason games in 2015 and 2016). That puts MdD somewhere between Bobby Bonilla and Dave Kingman in the excused absence rankings.

Could the Mets do that? They can't send down deGrom because it might impact his ASG status. Noah? Wheeler after today? It's likely not a big deal but if you can add a 3d catcher or really anyone who could be useful perhaps you should try.

Yo-Yo'ing back to the roster by 7:05 Friday night, according to all informed speculation: Yo!

Yo'ing in the other direction: Dom Smith, it is guessed. But we shall see.

Yo indeed back, with Dom goin' down.

But don't fear a lack of Smith, for Drew has returned. Leaving us, for now, is Corey Oswalt, making rotation room for the infinitely worse-performing (but better-compensated) Jason Vargas.

Jeff McNeil wasn't in the Las Vegas starting lineup tonight.
Just sayin'.

In case you were missing Paul Sewald, yearn no longer. He's taking Familia's spot on the roster if not his role in the bullpen.

Between Ricco's inane comments and Noah going on the DL, the game isn't for 3 hours and I'm already losing it.

I saw "going on the DL with hand, foot and mouth disease" and I thought it was some weird beat writer running gag.

It's not. Oswalt will take his spot.

It's also known as Coxsackie, so there isn't much to choose from aesthetically.

Kelly DFA'd, Cespedes to DL (awaiting word on surgery or what)

McNeil and Evans are the great Tuesday night hope

Corey Oswalt, who's pitched very well, has been sent down to clear space for Jason Vargas, who hasn't.

Re: Roster Notes 2018

Not that it matters as they all perform at the same level of "quality" but there could be 4 different Mets tomorrow:
Frazier
Matz might go on the DL
Evans might go on the DL
And they always interchange relievers. I'd vote for glove-throwing Shawn Kelly who was released by WSH today as their GM took a stand on player conduct (not running to first--not a problem; racist tweets--just say that you're sorry; but don't throw a glove!). Also, Bobby Wahl (Familia trade) is doing well so they might as well give him a shot.

Word is Wahl has been called up, need a 40-spot.

Goodbye, Drew Gagnon, we hardly knew ye, except for your one and only appearance before the Tuesday Night Mets Club.

Give your 47 to Bobby on the way out too

Frazier activated, Evans to DL (broken leg but reportedly not a terrible one -- easy to say when it's not yours).

Wahl up and wearing 61, Rhame to Vegas.

This is the only time in Mets history in which they've had a 59, a 60, a 61, a 62, a 63, a 64, a 65, a 66, a 67, and a 68 in the same year. It's the new normal

Did you tweet that? That's a neat factoid, if kind of a pathetic indictment of this team.

Re: Roster Notes 2018

Kevin Kaczmarski DFA'd to make room for Bobby Wahl on the 40-man...is a sentence that would have had no meaning not that long ago, but now it describes a current Met roster situation.

Marcos Molina, no longer in the Mets system, has been suspended by MLB for PED use.

Matz not on DL, but that seems his destination, given his mild flexor pronator strain. Matz is one of five Mets on the active 25 since Opening Day (Rosario, Reyes, Lugo and Gsellman are the others).

Swarzak has finally been pitching well... oh wait, he went on the DL today with a shoulder inflammation issue. Jacob "Match to a" Rahme is back, he of the 8.00 ERA.

That's the kind of ERA that makes opposing batters drool with anticipation.
I hope that makes the bat so slippery they can't grip it well.
