Lagares to miss the rest of the year with a torn toe ligament, sez the internet.

I'm learning to understand how useless the phrase "Xrays were negative" is.

"Negative. He has no toe, as far as we can tell."

This is what happens when Dr. Spaceman is your team doctor, Mets.

Re: Juan? Gone.

I guess this means Lagares goes on the 60-day, which will allow the Mets to add an outfielder to the 40-man.

Matt den Dekker?
Zach Borenstein?
Bryce Brentz?

Good. Now the big boys from New York City can go and buy Giancarlo Stanton, like any normal franchise from the world's greatest city would do.

first you gotta sell off equal value out of the infield though to fit it into the payroll.

Does this mean you don't like Bryce Brentz?

Great!

We can't even count on Bryce Brentz.

Re: Juan? Gone.

that explains why Jay Bruce pinch-hit for Lagares in the 9th inning of what was then a 12-0 game.

Because X-rays are looking for a break in a bone in the toe, which there isn't in this case.
He did subsequently undergo an MRI which showed, in addition to a hyper-extended toe (lots of hyper-extending going on lately), "a complete tear of the big toe plantar plate, a ligament" (DiComo - mlb.com).
And them ligament things don't heal so quick.

Re: Juan? Gone.

Someone get me the Ducks on line one.

Jordany Valdespin .406/.455/.710
Emilio Bonifacio .483/.484/.655

I guess it's safe for Jordany Valdespin to come back, now that John Buck is gone.

I bet Valdespin still ejects whipped cream every time he sneezes.

Re: Juan? Gone.

Matt den Dekker is hitting well (7 homers!) and he'd hopefully replace a lot of Lagares' defensive value, but he'd be one more lefty in an outfield stacked with 'em, especially while Céspedes is out. Zach Borenstein also swings lefty.

That leaves Patrick Kivlehan (R, .286 / .310 / .393 // .703), Ty Kelly (S, .269 / .351 / .493 // .844), and Cody Asche (L, .213 / .275 / .511 // .785).

If they want to go real crazy, they can call up Pete Alonso and squeeze him into the picture somehow.

I get that, it's just that they were so fast to let everyone know the x-rays were negative after the game (Apple and Figgy were announcing it on the post-game). Gotta remember not to take that as the final word from now on.

Re: Juan? Gone.

If they're gonna get den Dekker, then they gotta get Nieuwenhuis, too, so we can argue all damn season long over which one's better. Also, I guess we'll never see that big black dildo anymore with Harvey and Plawecki gone.

Re: Juan? Gone.

Had to look up Nieuwenhuis just to see if he's still playing these days.
The answer, it turns out, is yes, in the Seattle org at AAA Tacoma

And Niuey is essentially being Niuey so far in 2018 over 27 G/93 ABs (so he's playing more or less regularly, prolly sitting vs LHPs): low BA, lots of walks, even more Ks, and around half his hits for XBs
-- aka: .237/.368/.419; 9 of his 22 for XB (3 HR); 18 BB, 29 K

Re: Juan? Gone.

MdD and Kelly are options but they aren't on the 40-man. Such a choice! However, Sandy said that they might keep 13 pitchers rather than find another OF. This fits Sandy's MO of doing the least amount of work possible.

That's pretty obviously untrue.

If they want to promote a non-roster player, transferring a player to the 40-man roster is as easy as putting Lagares on the 60-Day DL.

Which, considering the state of the weather lately in the eastern third of the country, Cowgill is probably dealing with the rain, the ballpark, and other things.
