I just pulled this from the UMDB.

Of course you know you're citing only one managing job for those who had several.

Backman?

My suspicion is that list compares favorably to any other team since 62.

Am I? Who am I missing? I have it sorted chronologically, not by name.

My bad. I saw Davey Johnson's Baltimore and LA jobs back to back and thought you had omitted his Cincinnati run.

Manny Acta, Jose Oquendo (I think), and Matt Galante managed in the World Baseball Classic.

Got a live one: Eddie Yost.

What came of this?

Ned Yost, Brewers' skipper was a Met minor leaguer.

Lots of Yost. Are the two related?

I didn't follow up on the Eddie Yost thing; my Baseball Encyclopedia doesn't show that he was ever a manager, so I'm not sure what the deal is. I know some sources list guys as managers if they're filling in for a guy who was suspended for a few days. That may have been the deal with Eddie Yost. I did double-check the Hornsby/New York Giant thing, and ended up removing that. (Don't know where it came from, but it didn't look right and it turns out that it wasn't.) I also spotted that I was missing a San Francisco managing gig for Wes Westrum, which I've since added.

So, Yancy, are you going to add Ned Yost to your list in the first post, or will this thread become the list?

Ned Yost was never a Met, so I'm not interested in him.

Here's the current list. As I said above, I removed the Rogers Hornsby/N.Y. Giant listing and added Wes Westrum with the Giants. I also added the short stints in Houston and Milwaukee for Salty Parker and Roy McMillan. As best as I can tell, those two were legitimate "interim" gigs in between permanent managers. I don't know about the Eddie Yost thing. I wish there was a better standard regarding who's a manager and who isn't, but it's surprisingly fuzzy.

Here's an example of what I'm talking about:

I searched Newspaper archives. Eddie was apparently the interim manager in between Mickey Vernon and Gil Hodges. George Wagner fired Barnie on the spot for insubordination." Asked to explain, Wagner said, "I asked Barnie to resign and he said, 'no'."Four good Met snippets in that article: 1) Jimmy Piersall had worn 37 his whole career before being traded to the Mets, where nobody wore 37 unless his name was Stengel, so he switched to 34. 2) "The man on whom Hodges is leaning most heavily for intelligence on the ability and habits of American League players is coach Eddie Yost, who has moved up as the Number One [caps are Shirley's] managerial aide." 3) "Gil Hodges consulted only two persons for advice before taking the proffered job as manager of the Senators, Mrs. Hodges and Buzz Bavais [sic], general manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers. 'Do what you think best,' said Mrs. Hodges. 'Take it,' said Bavasi" 4) "Not all of New York was cheering for astronaut Gordon Cooper in the ticker-tape parade through lower Manhattan. From a sixth-floor window hung a banner that read, 'Let's go, Mets!'"

Okay, I'm convinced!

There were also an amazing number of early-day Mets who became coaches -- Johnny Lewis, Galen Cisco, Larry Bearnarth, Al Jackson off the top of my head.

Well, by saying apparently, it was more inferred from the Povich column. Write to Felicia Yost-Carr and get a real confirmation.

Re-double check Hornsby and the 27 Giants. McGraw in the 20's took an awfull lot of time off due to various health concerns. B-R, and various Total Baseballs have this as being so, crediting several different guys, mostly Bill Terry or Frank Frisch, as taking the reigns as "interms" Steve
