On edit: found a clip of the VU demo version of Satellite of Love. My link now points to that.

Is "Satellite" not exclusively from the Lou Reed solo catalog?

Well, it's a little sticky. VU recorded Satellite of Love but didn't release it until the box set in 1995. Lou obviously went solo with it between then.

It sounds pretty much the same as on his solo album, although the VU version IS a little rougher.

I'm happy to swap it out if you think that's better . . .

Mar 27 2006 07:49 AM

Sorry to stickle. Is there no clip of the VU version?

Actually, a lot of those songs --- "Sweet Jane," "Rock and Roll," even "White Light/White Heat" --- I'm prone to thinking of, after all these years, as Lou Reed solo material. Great selections, though.

Sweet Jane, Rock & Roll, White Light/White Heat were true VU songs. I love the "Transfomer" Satellite of Love but I'm not sure you want to go with it for VU (or that you should). Lou mined his Velvet material on his first, I think, 6 albums.

Also, you link to "Transformer" (which isn't fair).

]Sweet Jane, Rock & Roll, White Light/White Heat were true VU songs.

No doubt. Just a perception problem of my own. I probably just heard Rock and Roll Animal before I heard most of VU. Their albums were out of print when I was young and they existed more in legend for me than in fact.

And Rock and Roll Animal is pretty outstanding.

sharpie
Mar 27 2006 09:32 AM

And I came from the other end - distrusting the air-guitarishness of the Rock N Roll Animal versions, 'cause the VU versions were near and dear to me.

Edgy DC
Mar 27 2006 09:38 AM

No doubt, it's pure seventies air arena rock glam, but it doth rock.

So is there a link out there to the real track before I put up a grid?

I'm not going to swap it out now, since WP has already voted, but I'll keep it off my playlist in the future.

CCR 5.5
VU 4.5

All about the matchups. I listen to VU fairly often and, though I loved CCR as a lad, I rarely listen to them these days (plus no "Born on the Bayou" is tough). Also, for reasons stated earlier "Satellite of Love" is a fantabulous song but belongs on a Lou Reed solo matchup (where it'd get my vote against most songs).

See, I don't get that. Sure, the song was popularized by Lou Reed, but it's the same song VU recorded prior to '73. If it was created by VU, isn't it a VU song, even if they never released it?

VU, 8-2. I like CCR and this is a great playlist, but minus WL/WH, these are my absolute favorite VU songs.

I figured VU was going down in flames here, so I might as well trot out my personal list.

"Lookin' Out My Back Door" vs. "Sweet Jane (full-lenth version)"
Anyone who ever had a heart wouldn't turn around and break it. VU.

"Susie-Q" vs. "Pale Blue Eyes"
Thought of you as my mountain top. VU.

"Down on the Corner" vs. "Rock and Roll"
Two TV sets and two Cadillac cars ain't gonna help me at all. VU.

"Green River" vs. "What Goes On (Closet Mix)"
I'm going with with VU here. "What Goes On" is a better song, but it doesn't benefit from the Velvet's lo-fi detached style. It actually could have used a screechy Fogarty vocal.

"Up Around the Bend" vs. "Beginning to See the Light"
Both songs (both bands really) heavy on the rhytm guitar. I'm throwing this one to CCR. Bring a song and a smile for the banjo.

"Bad Moon Rising" vs. "Femme Fatale"
Hope you are quite prepared to die. CCR. "Femme" is great, but it's just got too. Much. Nico.

"Have You Ever Seen The Rain?" vs. "Satellite of Love"
’Til forever, on it goes through the circle, fast and slow. CCR.

"Fortunate Son" vs. "White Light/White Heat"
Two scorching scorching records. Can't call it. Tie.

"Who'll Stop the Rain?" vs. "All Tomorrow's Parties"
For Thursday's child is Sunday's clown. VU.

"Proud Mary" vs. "I'm Waiting for the Man"
"PM" is just one of those classick rock chestnuts that, if it was ever really that great, I can't hear it anymore. VU.

So it's 6.5-3.5, VU.

Velvet Underground.
There's something about that sound.

The "Transformer" version kicks ass with the piano lead and the backing vocals and re-worked lyrics. VU version is unfinished. We're voting on the VU version of a great song, which is not a great version. They were right not to include it on "Loaded."

Fair enough. I thought you were saying it wasn't a VU song, and so you couldn't vote for it. Saying it's not a particularly GOOD VU song (or at least not better than "Have You Ever Seen the Rain") makes sense to me.

I'll definitely have to retire it next time around--too controversial! Although having found the demo clip helps. I wonder if Heroin would have tipped the scales for VU . . .

"There She Goes Again" --- probably the most imitated song of the VU canon.

VU is currently winning so maybe you don't need to try to induce people with Heroin. I woulda voted for it, however, over "Have You Ever Seen the Rain?"

My problem is that I only know of the Velvet Underground from a historical viewpoint. I know that they rose out of New York in the late 1960's with Lou Reed and John Cale as principle members. Unfortunately, I am not very familiar with their music. I have listened to sound bytes of each song, but I don't feel it would be fair for me to vote based on that.
