OHW Challenge SAMPLE: John Fred v. Devo

Rotblatt

John Fred calls out Devo (sponsor: Rotgut).

My lead hit is, of course, "Judy In Disguise."

My counter song is Devo's cover of Satisfaction, as well as the mere presence of a "Greatest Hits" album, which I think proves that Devo is nowhere near the one-hit wonder John Fred is.

Okay, so since I can't create my alter ego Rotgutt without admin approval, I'm just going to PRETEND to be him.

Rotblatt, I respond with, of course, Devo's one TRUE hit, Whip It.

My counter challenge is Sometimes You Just Can't Win--which also happens to be on a Best Of album, douchebag.

on edit: Couldn't find Hey Hey Bunny. Sometimes you just can't win.

So then, do the rest of us vote?

Rotblatt

Not yet. I'm trying to do that cool Edgy formatting thing.

Give me a sec.

Rotblatt just called Rotblatt a douchebag.

I think.

Paging JB.

George Carlin would point out that douchebag is used only for describing females while scumbag is used for males.

John Fred vs.=darkblue]Devo

"Judy In Disguise"vs."Whip It"
"Sometimes You Just Can't Win"vs."Satisfaction"

Remember: for the first matchup, vote for the song you like BEST. For the second, vote for the song you like LEAST.

wow, but it's hard to find this song.

I like "Whip It" most.

That link to "Hey, Hey Bunny" doesn't work, which makes me mad. I therefore like that least.

I like "Judy in Disguise" most, and not very much at that.

I like "Satisfaction" least because they shouldn't mess with a classic.

"Whip It" wins best.
"Sometimes" wins least fave.

on edit. This is my vote, not the final tally.

"Judy In Disguise" vs. "Whip It" "Judy In Disguise"
"Sometimes You Just Can't Win" vs. "Satisfaction" "Sometimes You Just Can't Win"

So normally, we'd get at least 24 hours, but since this is just a sample, I'm calling the contest now.

"Whip It" and "Judy In Disguise" tie with in the "Favorite" category, 2-2.
"Sometimes You Just Can't Win/Hey Hey Bunny" beats out "Satisfaction" for "Least Favorite" with a score of 3-1.

Final score: 5-3, John Fred and His Playboy Band, who now take top spot in the One Hit Wonder Challenge.

Now I'm really confused.

People thought Whip it was equal to Judy in Disguise (I'd disagree, but I digress).
People thought "Sometimes You Just Can't Win/Hey Bunny" was WORSE than Satisfaction.

So John Fred wins? How? Under what reasoning?

I used to get "Judy in Disguise" and "Lucy in the Skys" mixed up when I was little

Because, if I understand correctly, the goal is to find the one-hitleiest of the one-hit wonders, and rank everybody behind them, not by their overall quality, but by their one-hitliness.

Like Edgy says, the Aristotelean ideal of a One-Hit Wonder is a band with only one good hit, surrounded by a bunch of crappy songs.

The first challenge is to determine which band has a bigger hit. In this case, they were equal.
The second challenge is to determine which band's next-best song is WORSE, thus proving that they are, in fact, a one-hit wonder and not, say, a two-hit wonder. Or the Beatles.

So in this case, while Devo and John Fred's hits were deemed equal, Devo's second-best song, Satisfaction, was better than John Fred's, meaning that John Fred has a better claim to being a one-hit wonder than Devo.

Does that make sense, or is it still unclear?

I understand better, but it'd be easy to stack the deck with a real shitty song by another group:

The Beatles vs. Norman Greenbaum

She Loves You vs. Spirit in the Sky
Revolution Number 9 vs. any other song ever recorded.

Clearly, the Beatles are going to win that one.

Well, it would if the the challenger didn't get to pick the counter song.

So if I'm the sponsor of Norman Greenbaum and I'm challenging the Beatles, I get to pick whatever Beatle song I want for the counter matchup--and it's not going to be Revolution Number 9.

The sponsor of the Beatles then picks the Greenbaum counter song.

OK, but what happens when it Norman Greenbaum vs. John Fred and his Playboy Band? No one's ever heard the second choice, so no one can really make a decision.

I've heard "Canned Ham"

Yeah, that's true. I was thinking that they'd cancel each other out, so if you haven't heard either song, you'd vote tie. . . If, on the other hand, you've heard one song, but not the other, I don't know what you'd do--I suppose vote the song you knew, unless you absolutely hated it.
