I like running with a live track. Hi risk, hi reward. Timothy B. Schmidt screamed about the omission of "I Can't Tell You Why," but was comforted by the absence of "Desperado."

My favorite group is the Eagles*. KC: I'm, um, not sure I can follow you there. ___________ *She may have actually said the Dead. But I'm pretty sure she said the Eagles. Damn funny. You're right, it's the Eagles she loves. She also big on the Beatles, Beach Boys, Paul McCartney and Wings, Barenaked Ladies, and Fountains of Wayne. I'm just glad she grew out of the NSync/Backstreet Boys stage of her earlier years.

I generally have more fondness for Steely Dan's quirkiness and variety -- but the Eagles do have a good front-line kind of catalog even within their sort of bland overall-ness. IOW; good starters, weak bench but that serves you well in this contest.

"The Long Run" vs. "Peg" --Coming off a well-regarded (if too well-regarded) Hotel California ‘The Long Run’ has to be one of the most disappointing albums ever. The only interesting thing about it was, if you have the LP, look at the vinyl between the label and the innermost song. Scratched into at least some copies was this message: NEVER LET YOUR MONSTER LIE DOWN and on the flip side: FROM THE POLOCK WHO SAILED NORTH. Otherwise this album is crap, and the title cut blows. Steely Dan. "Heartache Tonight" vs. "The Caves of Altamira" --I gotta go with the Dan again. HT always annoyed me. "Hotel California " vs. "Aja" --Dan. Eagles got out-matchupped a few times here but 7-3 is your final.

I guess that's part of the point but still. It also loses points for containing the lyric "pretty mama." Steels. "Life in the Fast Lane" vs. "Deacon Blues" Steely Dan "Lyin Eyes" vs. "Josie" Steely Dan. Nice country guitar from Don Felder on this one though. "Take It to the Limit" vs. "Hey Nineteen" Eagles. Country soul can work sometimes. "Already Gone" vs. "Don't Take Me Alive" Tie "Seven Bridges Road (live)" vs. "Babylon Sisters" Eagles "The Long Run" vs. "Peg" Steely Dan. "Heartache Tonight" vs. "The Caves of Altamira" "HT" annoyed me more. Country Soul don't always work. Steel. "Hotel California " vs. "Aja" Danny Dan Steely Dan, 7-3. I defend the Eagles even while not particularly liking them. Henley's vision of California isn't celbratory but really macabre --- the end of the rainbow where the American dream can't be followed any further, where all the sick and the seeking an the lonely can't seek any more, and so wander like zombies in empty affairs and drug abuse as the passage of time can't marked because there are no seasons. Surgery is available to some to try and keep the lines from their faces, but that just perpetuates the endless living Hell of the California undead. I think Nathaniel West first envisioned Cali this way (probably not), and some of the noir writers and directors got it also, but people, Henley's audiences for instance, too often misread it, and read a false allure into the warnings. It's the devil at work, I tells you.

I guess we knew our shorthand wasn't going to get us anywhere in the future. Neither did the Hustle, now that I think of it.
