I think she means 'Cousin Oliver' from the BB.

Who is Jenny Piccolo? The name rings a bell but google searches just bring up a punk band.

Oliver:

Evil cousin on Brady Bunch

Jenny Piccolo: Joanie's best friend. (Joanie, god love her, had some horrible sidekicks)

Benjamin Grimm

I voted for Full House, because of Joey Gladstone and Kimmy.

I did think of a few write-in candidates: Jack from Three's Company, Monica from Friends, Rebecca from Cheers, Scrappy Doo, Ann Romano and Schneider from One Day at a Time, and Big Bird.

Johnny Dickshot

In terms of descending annoyingness:

Kirk (Bob Newhart Show)
Chachi -- Not annoying, just an artificial dork
Oliver -- Pretty annoying
Jenny Piccolo -- hardly ever on, but a million times better as an unseen character. All I can recall was they made her like a Valley Girl or something.
Mork -- Pretty much the definition of annoying
Any character from Full House -- They all sucked

A year ago I knew nothing about Full House. My kids recently went through a kick when they were watching it a lot. Thankfully that's past.

I loved the Bob Newhart show, but I don't remember Kirk. Was he one of Bob Hartley's patients?

Oliver was a sign that the end was near for the Brady Bunch. It's always bad news when a little kid gets added to an established show. I think a little girl got added to the Cosby cast after Rudy older and less cute. (I had long stopped watching by then, though.) And don't get me started on All in the Family's Stephanie.

Oliver is annoying, but historically so important. A blonde male, not to mention clever in sea of dullards, he was in every way an anti-Brady allowed under the same roof. He was like a fifth columnist in the hermetically sealed Brady universe.

And don't tell me about the Alice precedent, because she didn't eat at the same table or sleep on the same floor. Oliver proved that the Bradys could be infiltrated.* It was their first sign of weakness, and then they were destroyed. The show was off the air and the singing group had broken up.

* It had something to do with his imperviousness to tragedy. The Brady household had six kids who lost at least one parent, yet they never paused in their hijnks to reflect upon their losses. Similarly, Cousin Oliver seemed to have lost his whole family. He never thought the how of it was worth a mention, though. Recognizing themselves in his heartless stoicism, the Bradys welcomed him in.

Suckers.

Who is this character? It's driving me crazy!!!! There was one episode with a costume ball on a ship and Fonzie and this girl pretend to get married but since the fake wedding was done by the ship's captain the girl insists they're married and moves in to the Cunningham's garage apartment. Jenny was Joanie's unseen friend from the early years who was always causing concern among Howard and Marion when Joanie would report the sordid adult things (kissing and such) that Jenny would share. (An on-going sub-theme in Happy Days is the Itialian Catholic-American and Jewish-American and African-American and Asian-American and Hoodlum-American influence being the change agent in the receding fifties Anglo-Protestant ascendency, the influence that the good Cunninghams have the sense to embrace, albeit reluctantly.)

After Richie and Ralph disappeared, Jenny --- the references to whom had long since declined with Joanie's maturity --- was made a present and regular character as Joanie's role expanded. (They originally consdered bringing back Chuck, but thought wiser of it and created the Ted McGinley character Roger.)

It wasn't so much Fonzie that Jenny was hot for, she was just kind of hot to trot, but had little luck at establishing a relationship like Joanie's and Chachi's. Her romantic woes provided her with room for self-effacing zingers, like a teenage Rhoda, but her self-pity had a comic tinge. In one episode (referred to by Willets) she was having bad luck and getting a hard time from a catty rival. Joanie and Chachi convinced Fonzie to be her date at a costume ball, going as a bride and bridegroom --- a platonic date, but one that would give her instant romantic cred.

The ball was on a boat, and when the rival upped her abuse of Joanie and Jenny from catty to bitchy, Fonz got sympathetic and asked the captain of the boat, dressed as a minister, to perform a mock wedding ceremony. The bitch's goat was gotten, but a short while later Roger realizes that a wedding ceremony officiated by the captain of a boat may in fact be legally valid. This made the Fonz worry, but Jenny delighted and tried to carry on as if she was actually married to the Fonz, and with his consent.

Not cool, Jenny. But hijinks ensued. The type of hijinks that occur on a show running on vapors.

By the way, Cathy Silvers, the actress who played Jenny, was the daughter of Phil Silvers.

Pinky and he were to be married. Didn't work out.

Pinky's sister, Leather, was later a semi-regular character for a year. She was never romantically linked to Fonzie, as far as I know, but she did have an ill-advised assignation with Ralph Malph.

Leather was played by British chick rocker Suzi Quatro, who clearly took the job to get into the US market. It didn't work so great, as her only US hit was a country duet with Chris Norman of Smokie ("Stumbin' In," speaking of one-hit wonders).

When Richie crashed his motorcycle and went into a coma, it not only produced the watermark moment of the Fonz crying, but it led Leather to sit at the piano and sing a sad song about how everybody was sad that Richie was in a coma --- a ballad which drove the rest of America into comas, and ABC to get rid of her and move on. Poor Donnie Most.

Edgy DC

Does it have to be a Chachi-centered plot to kill it, or does a mere Chachi appearance do the trick? Because Chachi was on eight out of 11 years.

So if it's the latter (any Chachi appearance is a killer), I guess he's saved you a lot of time.

Scott Baio, for being a Chachi, has a pretty legendary romantic history: Pamela Anderson (engaged, before Tomy Lee swept in), Brooke Shields, Heather Locklear (right back atcha, Tommy), Liza Minelli (crack kills, Scott) and Ornella Muti (Princess Aura).

Willets Point

Warning: Do not do a Google image search for Ornella Muti if you are at work.

HahnSolo
Mar 29 2006 08:27 AM

Just an appearance usually does it for me, but I would guess the first few of those 8 seasons he was not really a central character. He'd have maybe one scene per episode. "Hey Fonz, check her out. Waa waa waa."
So I might be able to handle some of those shows if I had to.

But as the series went on, he seemed to be there more and more.

I think Chachi also pillowed Nicole Eggert (of Charles in Charge, Baywatch, and fake boob fame).

Most Annoying Character - Sitcom:
Uncle Joey - Full House

Most Annoying Character - Drama:
House M.D. He is so annoying in the promos I can't bring myself to watch even one episode.

Most Annoying Character - Cartoon:
The aforementioned Scrappy Doo. And this is saying something considering the show also featured Fred and Scooby Dumb.

Most Annoying Character - Comic Strip:

Odie

Most Annoying Character - Movie:
Jar Jar Binks

Most Annoying Character - Movie that didn't otherwise suck:

Dana Delaney's character in Tombstone.

Most Annoying Character that I ended up liking anyway:

David Caruso's character Horacio in CSI: Miami. I can't explain it...he's so comically bad he makes you watch. At times you swear that he's not being serious and that it is actually a parody of bad acting. His facial expressions, his overdramatic presentations of the obvious.

Some Other Guy
(we'll call him Frank): Horacio, witnesses say there were five perps. We've nabbed two of them.

Horacio: Good work Frank.

Frank: Do you want to talk to the two guys in custody?

Horacio (looking off into the horizon): No Frank. (Puts on sunglasses). I want to talk to the three....(Caruso Pause)....who are not.

Caruso definitely has taken the mantle as television's most comically bad actor that was held for so long by Bill Shatner as TJ Hooker.

It's too bad Elizabeth Rohm as the ADA Serena Sutherland in Law & Order couldn't last, or she'd shirley give Caruso (who I don't watch) a run for his money.

This statement could stand to be infused with the Dickshot parenthetical as well.

Hate is an ugly emotion. Chachi (to say nothing of his thigh-bandana) is as good a symbol as any of the degradation of the once-ambitious Happy Days.

I was talking to Nostradamus the other day, and he said, "In the late seventies, Henry Winkler will star in the biggest show on television."

When my cousin, who now lives in CA, and works in the business (he's worked on The Larry Sanders Show) first went out there to find work, he made a little detour to Texas. "Why are you always sad, House?"

Benjamin Grimm

House is a great character. It did take me a few episodes to get used to him, though. At first glance he can seem a little cartoonish, the wise-cracking but nasty doctor. But there's definitely depth there.

Good show. I suspect sometimes that the title doesn't come from the name of the main character, but from the fact that in almost every episode the doctors break into a patient's house to look in their medicine cabinet.
