All Hanley's On Deck?

Boston DFA'd Hanley Ramirez today. Putting aside his Marlins days (didn't he dance after the Mets were Glavine'd out of contention?), he fits the Sandy criteria of someone who will be cheap, is old, and was really good 10 years ago. Worth a shot to platoon with Gonzalez at 1B?

Re: All Hanley's On Deck?

If could still play anywhere other than first base, I'd say he's a replacement for Reyes. But you're right, I wouldn't be surprised to see him come our way.

Re: All Hanley's On Deck?

From what I am reading and I am sure it's in that link a $22 million salary kicks in for next season if/when he gets 497 plate appearances this season, doubt many teams want to stomach that!

Re: All Hanley's On Deck?

Seems like Gonzalez, Bautista, Reyes, and Hanley might exceed our quotient on stars from Obama's first term.

If they are interested in Hanley, I would think it would be to replace Reyes, rather than in addition to him. And yeah, that would be at a cut salary.

Re: All Hanley's On Deck?

Would I rather have Gonzalez or would I rather have two lesser players split time at first?

uh..

Re: All Hanley's On Deck?

Flores is a better option vs lefties at 1B.

Hanley last played SS in 2014 and a single game at 3B the following year. If he can still fake it at 3B he's worth a look at least until Frazier is back, but if he is limited to 1B I don't see him being helpful

Re: All Hanley's On Deck?

Wow, I thought Hanley was doing pretty well for the Red Sox this season, although he's been slumping lately. I suppose there's only room for one older guy making a lot of money on the roster now that Pedroia's coming back.

Re: All Hanley's On Deck?

No way can/does Hanley play SS anymore (he wasn't all that good at it back in his prime) and in my mind he's almost exclusively a DH/PH/1B these days (not a particularly good 1B either but you can live with
that) so the whole Reyes-replacement thing doesn't really match up.

Had he come to market prior to Bautista I'd have preferred Hanley given an either/or option. It'd be a little quick to dump Bautista after (what ... six?) ABs but that's five more than Gary Mathews Jr. got
IIRC although under somewhat different circumstances. I suspect, though, that someone else will offer him a bit more playing time than that.

Re: All Hanley's On Deck?

Hanley's one season in the outfield was nightmarish (i.e., why play him in left field if he'd actually cost the team fewer runs at short), and he's not a safer bet to hit lefties well going forward than Flores. The Mets could use a capable centerfielder who hits left-handed pitching, but players like that don't get DFA'd.

Re: All Hanley's On Deck?

Ramirez has had one good year in four, Bautista was just bad last year.
