....yesterday, of the last time David Wright appeared in an MLB game.

David celebrated belatedly yesterday by playing catch and not shaving. May he take a grounder soon.

It's nice that he was able to throw a ball. For as much as that's worth, anyway.

Re: Two Year Anniversary

Do you think one reason they're holding on to Reyes is hoping the Wright comes back so they can play together again?

No.

If that was the intent, the cost-benefit ratio would be very high.

I certainly hope not!

If that was the reason, and it happened, I'd kiss a Wilpon, I would.

Well, maybe lightly peck one. But I don't think they operate on that sentimental a level, though I would if I owned the team.

Re: Two Year Anniversary

Sunday (May 30) was the 83rd anniversary of Babe Ruth's final game ... and in his case we KNOW it will remain the final one.

Gary mentioned, when talking about the two year span since Wright last strapped 'em on, that David had HR'd in each of his final three ML games and wondered if anyone had done that before or since.
My first thought at the time went to Ruth who I thought had hit 3 HRs in his final game but it turns out that, although his final 3 HRs did all come in one game, that game occurred five days before he retired.
The then 40 y/o Babe would go on to play in only parts of those five games getting no hits plus 4 walks on just 13 more plate appearances - so those HRs were his final hits in the big leagues.
In all he'd get just 92 PA/72AB for the 1935 Boston Braves (the tomahawk chop noises supposedly drove him out of the game) and that 3-HR game represented half his season total for that partial season.

Yeah, I think that tri-homer game was a remembered because it was the final Sunday of his career. That was a big deal as it was consistently and easily the biggest crowd of the week, even though there was no Sunday baseball in many cities when he first came up.

I'm sort of hoping they whack Reyes so as to promote Wright.Alderson for all his no-nonsense isn't above this kind of goosey showmanship.
