Running on DSL: The DSL Mets 1 in 2018

I always forget that the Dominican Summer League starts before the other short season leagues. I guess because they don't need the draft to help fill out their roster, they can get a jump on everybody else. The 2017 DSL Mets 1 won at such a prodigious rate (44-27, .620) that they'll be hard-pressed to top last year's results no matter how well the 2018 squad does. You've got to not just be good, but have some luck on your side, and with a 3-4 record, while Pythagoras thinks they should be 5-2, well, luck has a way of evening things out. They have more than a few players returned from last year's squad, and almost everybody on last year's squad did really well (thus, the record), so I imagine a bunch of them are only back for a handful of games, getting sharpened up for a few weeks before joining the Gulf Coast Mets, the Kingsport Mets, or the Brooklyn Cyclones. DSL-ers get Sundays off, but the Mets 1 won (see what I did there?) yesterday, and did so handily, downing the Latin American teenagers of the DSL Twins, scoring in each of the last five innings. Rookie Cesar Loaiza took the win with 3 1/3 shutout innings across the middle of the game, giving up three hits and a walk, but striking out four to keep the Twins off the board. Cesar is currently killing it to the tune of a 1.59 ERA. I come to praise him, not to bury him. Currently rocking a roster of 33, 57.5% of the DSL Mets 1 are not actually Dominican(!), with the team currently fielding 15 Venezuelans, 2 Colombians, and 2 more players form Curacao. While DSL kids rarely have much power yet (2 homers thus far), the team has been otherwise burning down the house with their bats, with two players (catcher Andres Rgnault and shortstop Malvin Nuñez currently batting over .400, and five more batters coming in with averages over .300. Regnault, part of all Venezuelan catching staff for the team, is currently 14th in the league in OPS at 1.241, while throwing out 44.4% of would-be base-stealers. Second-year pro Felix Sosa mostly struggled in his first season with the team, but so far in 2018, he has had one start, in which he has thrown five innings of no-hit shutout ball. I'd be tempted to shut it down right there, but expect to see Felix in the stateside leagues soon enough if he can build on that start at all. Curacao native Nelmerson Xavier Angela (he uses all three names) has been the top reliever so far, throwing five innings out of the pen, giving up just one un-earned run on two hits, while walking none and striking out five. The season continues tomorrow against those same Twins, as the Mets 1 try to close the gap on the DSL Nationals, who sit three games ahead of the Mets 1 in first place in the Dominican Summer League South Division. While not the juggernaut they were in 2017, the DSL Mets 1 (who need a better name), are still performing well, sitting in third place, four games out in the Dominican Summer League South Division. An adjustment here or a corner turned there and they could be back off to the races. (Working on the photos, here.) But one guy who needs no adjustments is catcher Andres Regnault. The Caracas native signed back in 2015 has turned a corner and is now second in the league in OPS, clocking in at .342 / .431 / .613 // 1.043, while throwing out 30% of baserunners. He's also second in the league with six homers. He's a little old to still be in the DSL, but catchers can be notoriously slow developers. It'll be exciting to see where he lands next. When Regnault catches, the guy he likes to catch most is Cesar Loiza. Mentioned above, Loiza started the season in the pen, before his overall jaw-dropping-ness got him promoted to a regular rotation slot. That doesn't always work, does it? Well, stop being such a freaking cynic. I've come to praise Cesar, not to bury him. And when a guy is 4-0 with a 0.88 ERA through his first 30 2/3 innings, the praise comes EASY. He's walked 12, struck out 38, NOT given up a SINGLE homer, and has pitched shutout ball in three of his four starts. Loiza is a 20-year-old DSL rookie. He's another case where it'll be interesting to see how hard the Mets push him. Loiza is a WINNA. When it's time for Loiza to relinquish the ball, you can be pretty confident if it's relinquished to Nixon Silva. Unimpressed with Loiza's 0.88 ERA, the Silva has put up a 0.87 figure. An 18-year-old from Bolivar, the Silvasmith has struck out 18 in 20 2/3 innings, with all but one of his 7 appearances coming out of the pen. Not impressed? Well consider that he has walked only one. NOT BAD for an 18-year-old, you unreasonable yutz. CONTROL! It's the Nixon Doctrine. Even as we speak, the DSL METS 1 (who need a better name) are leading in the fifth inning against the DSL Cardinals Blue (who need a better name). Who's on the mound? Cesar Loiza is on the mound. And if that's not money, I don't know what is. The Mets beating the Yankees tonight was the featured bout, but on the undercard, the DSL Mets 1 beat the DSL Yankees, 3-0, securing the win with a one-hitter. Junior Santos threw five hitless innings, walking one and striking out four, before making way for Jhonfran Escalona, who threw the last four innings, allowing one hit and walking none, earning the super-rare four out save!

Three hits and three RBI from catcher-playing-DH Andres Regnault led the way as the DSL Mets 1 knocked off the DSL Yankees, 7-4. Adrian Aybar started and gave up only one unearned run in his four innings of work, while Jhonfran Escalona finished up with two perfect innings for the save. It was the sixth win in a row for the DieselMets, and the 12th in 15, part of glorious run that began even before the Great Migration of June 27, when the Mets two Dominican Summer League teams swapped about 16 players apiece. I don’t know if the purpose was to get all the organization’s best players on one team to make a big dash for the post-season, but it sure has worked out as such. Not worrying about punching above his weight has been Christofer Dominguez. The stocky lefty from Montecristi, DR has been the team’s most reliable starter, and that’s saying something. His 6-1 record after starting 10 games is enough to make a rich woman beg and a good woman steal, and his STUPID 1.36 ERA through 53 innings will make an old woman blush and make a young girl squeal. But starts are short way down there in the DSL! Who will come out of the pen to help?! Well, if you’re lucky, your help comes from Daniel Guzman. My Cuz Guz has been a force out of the pen, not striking out a lot, but keeping the ball on the ground and yielding an ERA of but 1.67. With pitching like that, you’re probably asking the question that made Benjamin Orr famous. Who, pray tell, is gonna drive you home? As in 2017, in 2018, the Mets produced a Dominican Summer League juggernaut. Last year it was the DSL 2 Mets squad tearing through the league at a .704 clip (50-21), this year, their DSL 1 kinsmen tore the league down at a less alarming but still torrid .653 pace (47-25). The difference this year is that halfway through the season, when they realized the DSL 1 team was the better unit, they transferred a bunch of the better DSL 2 players over there to stack the team (see 7/27, above). That seemed really uncool. If one organization has two teams competing in the same league, intersquad transfers should be disallowed. Some guys really answered the challenge, though. Andres German, for instance, was 2-2 with a 3.13 ERA when he received his mid-season transfer to the DSL 1 team, and then he became almost unbreachable, storming home with a 3-0 record and a 0.76 ERA over six starts in his second half. He finished at 5-2 and 1.97, striking out 58, walking 15, and giving up just one teenaged homer. This made for a real nasty 1-2 punch in the DSL South Division, along with Christofer Dominguez, who started 10 games with a 6-1 record and a 1.36 (!!) ERA over his 53 innings. Combined with a bullpen that included the fiery-monikered Jefferson Escorcha (1.57 ERA, 57 1/3 innings, 63 strikeouts, 0.76 WHIP), Jhonfran Escalona (1.88 ERA, 48 IP, 0.78 WHIP), and Daniel Guzman (1.17 ERA in 46 13 innings), there was a good chance that, if you caught this squad, things would zip along without a whole lot of offense interfering with the proceedings. Which doesn’t mean the Mets themselves couldn’t put up fireworks. Catcher Andres Regnault was the very embodiment of an all-star, going .333 / .420 / .573 // .993 in 224 trips to the plate. He led a very impressive catching squad that also included Juan Loyo (.779 OPS) and Endy Rodriguez (.775 OPS) WRITE THESE NAMES DOWN! And if you want a little middle infield action, check out second baseman Felix Valerio. (A second baseman named Felix is always a good thing!) The Flexer led the squad with 114 total bases, going .319 / .409 / .433 // .843 in a season that looks like it catapult him to Brooklyn sometime soon. Who knows, with Caribbean teenagers, right? But when the present is dry, look to the future, even if you’re looking to guys several years away.
