Carnage at Shinnecock Hills (the 2018 U.S. Open Thread)

With most of the field yet to tee off from this year's 1st round of the U.S. Open out in eastern L.I., some of the early (full round) scores from some pretty darn good golfers just jumped out and
smacked me in the face:

- Bubba Watson at +7 (77)
- Phil Mickelson- ditto
- Jordan Spieth +8
- Jason Day +9
- Charl Schwartzel +9
- Rory McIlroy +10!!

That group has 15 majors between them and hundreds of combined weeks as #1 in the rankings and really only Phil can be considered past his prime.
The weather seemed a little windy in the few minutes I saw but it's not like it was Scotland-east or anything.

In addition to those scores above there's some Scotsman I've never heard of -- Scott Gregeroy -- who carded a 22-over 92
Usually you see a score like that and you assume he's an amateur who got an invite from winning the U.S. or British (or other) Amateur tourneys but is clearly over his head with the big boys,
but as far as I can tell he's listed as a pro (although maybe not after today)

No mention of Tiger? You'll never make it in the golf reporting/columnist racket.

He tees off later.

Tiger's preparation for his later tee time is important. Very important.

That topic title made me think it was another mass shooting. I had no idea there was golf going on there.

I was stuck in a two and a half hour traffic jam this afternoon and my wife likes to listen to CBS News Radio in the car. I heard the sports twice an hour.
So this title thread wasn't a surprise.
But the reporters spent a lot of time telling us how badly the name players were performing and you had to listen closely to hear the names of the leaders.

Re: Carnage at Shinnecock

Shinnecock Hills kicked the pros collective asses today. I love it when the conditions at a course frustrates professionals and makes them score like amateur weekend hackers.

The carnage continues:
Tiger Woods +8 with 1 hole to play
Sergio Garcia +5
Lance Koepka +5 (defending champion)
Justin Thomas +4
Ricky Fowler +3

If the wind keeps blowing, a score of even par could conceivably win.

"Carnage at Shinnecock" sounds like a recap of my sophomore year at college. I was SLAYING it back then.

I suppose I could have chosen a more tasteful subject heading, but it never actually occurred to me that someone would think it was a mass crime at the nearby Shinnecoock Reservation

Anyway, considering that there are only four golfers under par -- Ian Poulter, Scott Piercy?, Dustin Johnson, and Russel Henley? -- with none of them better than 1-under, and only Jason Dufner at
par, even some of those ugly 1st-round scores aren't totally out of reach.
Tiger, Adam Scott, and Jon Raum (+8) became late-afternoon big-name victims of the course.

I was thinking some kind of bloodbath at the golf club. Maybe some black ladies weren't playing fast enough again.

I never heard of any of these guys, but boy, I could not have done better if somebody asked me "Name four guys who sound like they like to golf."

Re: Carnage at Shinnecock (the 2018 U.S. Open Thread)

I put question marks next to the two guys I didn't know (or barely knew) also.
But Dustin Johnson (*married to Paulina Gretzky -- daughter of Wayne and Janet Jones) is probably the best player in the world right now and Poulter is a veteran Englishman who's still good
even to at least occasionally compete near the top even though he's sadly given up the spikey hair and Union Jack pants he used to fancy.

* after re-looking this up, I realize that Dustin & Paulina are STILL one of those perpetually engaged couples that yet to marry despite five-plus years together and two children
Either way, when I think of Paulina I recall the Gershwin lyric: 'Summertime' from Porgy & Bess: your daddy's rich and you mama's good looking

Perhaps not surprisingly, 'Golf Digest' was only too happy to take advantage of the connection.

Re: Carnage at Shinnecock (the 2018 U.S. Open Thread)

a cover like that could almost get me interested in golf... almost.

I think they should broadcast miniature golf tournaments. Watching Tiger try to get it through the windmill into the clown's mouth would be infinitely more interesting than watch him hit a stationary ball over a stationary lawn toward a stationary hole, with only god playing defense. Although watching any non-white on a golf course who isn't a caddy, or any woman in the clubhouse who is not serving drinks, must be considered a step in the right direction.

Re: Carnage at Shinnecock Hills (the 2018 U.S. Open Thread)

So the [u:23qp751p]scoring[/u:23qp751p] carnage continued for many of the big names. Among those big names and previous major winners missing the cut for the weekend include:
Germany's Martin Kaymer -- a two-time Major winner and Ryder Cup hero -- somehow barfed his way to a score of [u:23qp751p]18 Over[/u:23qp751p]!!
American Kenny Perry also finished up at +18 although at least he's well past his age prime.
Others include: 2017 Masters Champ Sergio Garcia +14; Adam Scott +13 (2013 Masters); Matt Kuchar +12; Jason Day +12 (2015 PGA); Bubba Watson +11 (Masters x2); Rory McIroly +10 (four Majors plus 95 weeks at #1);
Tiger Woods +10; and Jordan Spieth (three majors including US Open twice) notched a bogie on his 36th hole to fall to +9 in a tourney with a +8 cut-off

Dustin Gretzky Johnson continues to be the only one below par (-4).
Charley Hoffman (E), Henrick Stanson (+1), Justin Rose, Brooks Keopka, Ian Poulter (all +1) plus Ricky Fowler at +2 are the other big names up front.

Re: Carnage at Shinnecock Hills (the 2018 U.S. Open Thread)

I like Ricky Fowler. He's got the build of a tennis player, the name of a NASCAR driver, and a haircut that out of an early 70s bubble glam band.
