Very happy for Jake, the first Met to earn multiple selections as a Met since David Wright's last All-Star berth in 2013.

Mets who've been the Mets' only pick more than once (pending lightning striking and Nimmo suddenly getting named):

Ron Hunt 1964, 1966
John Stearns 1977, 1980, 1982 (also picked alongside Mazzilli in 1979)
Bobby Bonilla 1993, 1995
Mike Piazza 1999, 2002 (also picked alongside teammates five times)
Jacob deGrom 2015, 2018

Mets have like 40 guys who could've gone.

Did you mean some mystical merit based game? Well, Nimmo obviously. Asdrubal has fallen off a bit lately but he's still have a good season. He wouldn't be a bad pick.

Zack Wheeler is 11th in qualified SP fWAR. That's probably border line but wouldn't be a wrong pick depending on who bows out/pitches Sunday and how many relievers you take.

That's probably it though.

I"m low. 46 players have played for the Mets this season, and if fans had decided to mount a campaign and vote in Phillip Evans, he would've played in the game.

Re: IGT 7/17/18: All-Star Game, "This Time It Doesn't Count"

Oh, so you're talking about people who are technically eligible, the same way that I'm eligible to be pope because I was baptized Catholic, even though I'm now an athiest.

I was talking about reasonable choices. Philip Evans is as likely to be an All-Star as I am to be the next pope. Jacob deGrom is the only Met who deserves to be an All-Star based on merit. If he wasn't around, then the Mets would get a pity choice.

You gotta be unmarried to be pope. My money is on Evans.

Re: IGT 7/17/18: All-Star Game, "This Time It Doesn't Count"

I'm sure you know more about this than I do, but I found this simple explanation, which means I have a shot:

6. The next pope doesn’t necessarily have to be a cardinal.
There are only two requirements for becoming pope: being male and being baptized into the Catholic Church. But although this technically leaves hundreds of millions of people eligible, they shouldn’t hold their breath. A non-cardinal hasn’t been chosen since 1378, when the selection of Urban VI brought about the Western Schism.

And this more detailed explanation, which would rule me out, not because of marriage but because of parts of (1) and (4) and (5):

A person who is elected as Roman Pontiff must be ordained a bishop immediately after election, if he does not already hold such office.

Second:
Can. 378 §1. In regard to the suitability of a candidate for the episcopacy, it is required that he is:
1/ outstanding in solid faith, good morals, piety, zeal for souls, wisdom, prudence, and human virtues, and endowed with other qualities which make him suitable to fulfill the office in question;
2/ of good reputation;
3/ at least thirty-Five years old;
4/ ordained to the presbyterate for at least Five years;
5/ in possession of a doctorate or at least a licentiate in sacred scripture, theology, or canon law from an institute of higher studies approved by the Apostolic See, or at least truly expert in the same disciplines.

Well, I disagree. So you're wrong. Cabrera, Nimmo, and Wheeler (I guess) are having good seasons, but not deserving of All-Star. (Unless as a solo Mets pity selection.)

Cabrera's sixth in fWAR among NL secondbaseman. He'd be a higher (and a defensible All-Star choice), but his baserunning has been pedestrian and his defense an unambiguous negative.

Of course, that was before today's homerun. Tomorrow's data may disagree.

Aroldis Chapman is this year's entry in the annual Yanqui tradition of pulling out of the All-Star game citing a strain of his 'I don't want to pitch in the All-Star Game' tendon.

Not that I want to get in the habit of defending MFY scum, but when we were at the game in Toronto on Saturday, Chapman left after one batter claiming injury. I don't know if he's pitched since then.

He hasn't pitched since way back ... yesterday.

The Yanx only had a three run lead and, in fairness, the Indians did have the bottom of the lineup due up.

Its a rite of July: the annual tradition of Yankee fans imploring voters/managers to put 8, 9, even 10 MFYs on the all-star team but protesting violently when they actually have to play in the game.

Not a surprise. I guess you could make the case Kershaw deserved it over Harvey in 2013.

It is what it is.

But this year, it usually ends with Jake getting screwed.

Interesting how home field has been a factor the last two times we've had a legitimate ASG starter candidate. Harvey and Kershaw would have been close in any ballpark; same for deGrom and Scherzer.

At least Roberts intends to use a Met at some point in the game, unlike Terry Collins in 2016.

I've only watched some. Trout gave that deG pitch a clout.

There's probably some research that shows outfielders talking into
mics is somehow entertaining but I find it boring. At least now it's
now an exhibition game again and I guess they're gonna dumb it
up as much as possible from here on out.

Seems all the four major sports these days except hockey have
people running it that went to The Vince McMahon School of Biz.

So let's see here: 10 innings, 18 pitchers, 14 combined runs scored with 13 of them coming via the HR; also 9 BBs & 25 Ks against 20 hits, a full half of those 20 hits were HRs
Ladies and gentlemen: welcome to major league baseball, 2018 style!

Perhaps no ASG has more symbolized its year since Willie McCovey knocked in the only run of the game on a 1st inning GiDP back in 1968, a game which featured eight hits combined, seven of them singles.
Oh, and the run was unearned.
Some rookie named Koosman came on with 2 outs in the 9th to strike out Yax for the final out and the save.

So, can MLB punish him for this ? will they?

I hope not. It'd be a weird precedent.

I imagine the marketplace will punish him though. There goes your Puma endorsement.

Two steps to take after becoming famous:
Step One: Erase everything you've ever said or done on social media
Step Two: See 'Step One'

Alternatively,

Step One: Don't be a racist, homophobic misogynistic dickhead
Step Two: If you are one, don't post it on social media

This will probably end up with him getting sensitivity training or something like that. Probably voluntarily. I can't imagine they can suspend him for something he did before he was in MLB.

The guy said what he said, and posted it to the world. So he should get all the consequences that follow.

That being said, it looks like he is sincerely apologetic, and has taken responsibility for what he said. His teammates seem to think this doesn't reflect who he is now. So there is that. Anytime something like this comes up, I thank god that there was no internet, camera phones, or any social media when I was in HS/college.

Deadspin had almost the exact same hot take as Centerfield, including virtually the same two enumerated takeaways.

="Chris Thompson at Deadspin"]Hader would’ve been 17 years old when he saw fit to fart most of these vile thoughts out into the world—old enough to know better, of course, but young enough to still be a punk teenager, and a punk teenager who was tweeting at a time when Twitter was not remotely what it is now. He will have to eat shit for all this, one way or another, and he’ll deserve every bite of it. But there’s a teachable moment here all the same. Lesson one is don’t be an outrageous bigot. Lesson two, as always, is never tweet.

I feel so starkly average.
