IGT 07/15 - WAS @ NYM - Corey On My Wayward Son

Your team is below .500, way below expectations, you have a 1st-year manager and you're not sure he knows what he's doing, and you have a big name OF who is not giving you anything close to what you expected from him... it sounds familiar but you must be a Nationals fan! The Mets take on the sub-.500 Nationals today. It's Corey Oswalt (0-2, 6.75, 1.15 WHIP-!!!) against RHP Jeremy Hellickson (3-1, 3.47, 1.09). Hellickson comes off 5 IP and no ER against PIT but before that, he gave up 8 ER in 4 IP against Miami. He's only made 3 starts since returning from the DL so look for him to be gone after the 5th (unless the Mets have dispensed with him sooner). He might be leaving early if only to avoid facing a lineup for the 3d time: scroll to the "By Innings/Pitches" stats. http://www.espn.com/mlb/player/splits/_ ... hellickson Against Hellickson, Jose Bautista is 12-35 with 3 HR, Asdrubal Cabrera is 11-26 with a HR, Jose Reyes is 12-33 with a HR (and Yoenis Cespedes has 3 HR--DAMMIT!). On April 16, he pitched 4 2/3 against the Mets (2 ER, 7 H). Corey Oswalt comes off his best performance as a Met, 6 IP and 3 ER against PHI. None of the Nationals have seen him before. Won't they be surprised! Since there isn't much to say about Corey how about Patton Oswalt: his Netflix special "Annihilation" is excellent. This is a big game. Sure, the Mets are out of it but it would be nice to go into the break on a 3-game winning streak. And it would make the Nationals 2 under .500 while making them and their dopey fans live with a 3-game losing streak until Friday.

boy, the Nattionals suck. Muffy can't move, Harper barely runs. Roark the other night struck that posture with his glove open at the Back of the mound as though to say, "Give me the ball" before the Mets had stopped running the bases. I agree its right to be punishing a club that plays like this. Perhaps the SHaMs make it a tiny goal of theirs to surpass these guys.

I have to wonder how much Bryce Harper's performance this year is going to affect his free agency. I expect he'll still cash in big, but maybe for fewer years?

I wouldn't take out a pitcher in the 5th who is rolling for a batter who is "struggling" but that's just me. I also wouldn't take out a pitcher after only one good inning when that pitcher is capable of pitching multiple innings and then bringing in a "struggling" pitcher just to give him work before the break.

Mickey is treating this game like an exhibition game, trying to get even everybody work rather than trying to win. Lugo could have pitched this inning but Mickey wanted to give the incompetent Swarzak an inning before the break.

Self-inflicted wounds here. No need to take out Oswalt. No need to take out Lugo. Swarzak walks two and makes a bad throw to 2d. This is all on the manager, including the decision to put in Dom Smith.

I was furious about this. Dammit, you've got a kid who's rolling and you take him out after 59 pitches? They probably would have lost the game anyway but I would have liked to have seen what he could have done. And jeez, Reyes could have stolen home just by taking a 70-foot lead off third base (which they were giving him). The minute the catcher releases the ball back to the pitcher, you go. Nobody could throw you out.

That's maddening. Do that once, successfully bunt two or three times, and the shift is seriously curtailed. Take what they give you. The gentelmanliness of the game is seriously corroding it. There's way too much fraternity, and gentlemen's understandings.

I'm convinced that one of the reasons that the Mets runs scored and batting average is so low is that they refuse to do this. You have guys who hit into the shift over and over without ever thinking of changing their approach even occasionally.

And as I mentioned in the other thread, you have guys who come to the bigs with this ability, and suddenly all they do when they get here is roll over into the shift. I really think this is an organizational philosophy. And a failing one.
