Tennessee Studs: The Kingsport Mets in 2018

My regular computer has been in the shop for a few days, so those minor league updates that have you at the edge of your seats have been tabled until at least tomorrow. But I couldn't let another day go without a snapshot of centerfielder Anthony Dirocie and the hell he's raining upon Appalachian League pitchers as the Kingsport Mets' season gets under way.

Anthony is 21 â€” undeniably old for such a low level â€” and his career has had a few false starts, but now 10 games and 43 plate appearances into his season, his line is floating above the clouds at (sit down for this) .514 / .558 / .973 // 1.531! Sure, that's bound to come down to earth, but it's not just the good luck that his batted balls are continuing to find holes at a rate over 50% even after 43 trips to the plate, it's also that among his 19 hits are four doubles, two triples and three homers.

Kingsport is off to a 7-4 start, and obviously, our Son of Santo Domingo is a big part of that. Anthony Dirocie: not just an athlete, but a scholar and a gentleman. Get to know that name and associate it with good things.

Recent first-round draft choice Jarred Kelenic is off and running, receiving a promotion to Kingsport after KRUSHING it in his initial dozen games with the GCL Mets, going .413 / .451 / .609 // 1.060 with 1 homer and 9 RBI in his first 51 plate appearances.

He's also 4-for-4 in the stolen base department.

Kingsport won a WILD one this evening over Greeneville, coming out on top of a see-saw battle 13-12, as third baseman Yoel Romero knocked a walkoff shot in the ninth.

2018 first-round pick Jarred Kelenic went 2-for-4 with a walk, homerun, and four RBI in his Appalachian League debut, playing centerfield and batting fifth.

An 0-for-3 game last night from Jarred Kelenic was just the glass of calm-down juice I needed. The 2018 first rounder has excitingly hit safely in 13 of 16 games so far as a pro, but all three of those hitless games have come in the last five. Even so, he walked, stole a base and scored last night in The Kingsport Metsâ€™s 5-1 victory over the Greenville Reds.

But yeah, calm down, heâ€™s only hitting .390 as a pro. Get a grip. Heâ€™s only reaching base at .456 clip. Take a valium, man. Heâ€™s only slugging .644.

Whatâ€™s a real curiosity to me, and I think what will determine if heâ€™ll taste any of this productivity at a higher level, is how much an advantage he mustâ€™ve had being practically raised in a baseball academy. Maybe his productivity is not so much a product of talent, but that what modest talents he has have been so refined. He probably has a lot more experience with wooden bats, too. So great. Heâ€™s got a head start, and such productivity almost has to taper off as he gets to higher levels, but will it flatline as the other players catch up to him in training, and raw natural talent will be more of a determining factor/difference maker.

I guess heâ€™s somewhat analogous to Gregg Jefferies in this regard. One comforting reality last night was that Jonathan India, the prospect that the Mets were broadly said to be more interested in, played for Greenville, and heâ€™s hitting just .158 Yeah, he has a barrel-full of walks, but the summer would be that much more turgid if our first round draft choice was off to lackluster start, as opposed to the Keleniffic one we have so far.

The truth is that batting acumen is going around for Kingsport. They are second in the league to Elizabethton in batting average, second in OBP, second in slugging, second in OPS, and second in homers (to Johnson City). Kelenic only joined the K-Mets when they promoted Anthony Dirocie to Brooklyn and AD was hitting .408 / .492 / .755 // 1.247, so high-end batsmanship is a defining trait for Sean Ratliffâ€™s squad, with the help of his esteemed batting instructor, Delwyn Young.

Josue Matosâ€™ pitching staff isnâ€™t dropping the ball either, except when the drop it into the strike zone for strike three! Taking point for the group is right-handed Venezuelan JosÃ© Butto, who has redecorated the league to the tune of a 1.25 ERA through his first four starts, covering 21 2/3 innings, striking out 20, while walking only 7. That follows on the heels of a 1.38 ERA last season in the Dominican Summer League. He may be a guy!!

You know whoâ€™s TOTALLY a guy? Joshua Walker is. The 2017 draft pick has pitched in nine games in the Appy League, totaling 9 innings, and still maintains his virginal 0.00 ERA, having fanned 12, while giving free passes to nobody. And that splendid perfection may be his career line for Kingsport, having already been promoted to Brooklyn

Last nightâ€™s win helped the K-Mets take 3-of-4 in the series against Greenville, pushing their second-half record to 13-9, a single game out of first in the Applachian League West Division. The lock horns this weekend with first-place Elizabethan, so it should be exciting baseball. Garrison Bryant takes the bump for the good guys.

Know what's cool? If you're a Kingsport Met, then Willy Taveras is cool. Slick Willy was called up from the Rookie-level GCL League, where he'd been 2-1 with a 1.23 ERA in his first four starts, and has continued right on dominating in hill country of Kingsport, Tennessee, goign 2-0 through his first two starts with a 2.12 ERA. Add in his work in the Dominican Summer League the past two summers, and he's got a career mark of 14-6 / 2.39 through his first 146 2/3 innings, striking out 125 and walking just 22. That's not quite 1.35 walks per nine innings. That's some All-Star level work for the 20-year-old. That's cool!

Know what's even cooler? Remember Joshua Walker? Sure you do! From the last Kingsport report! He was The Man Without an ERA! The good news for Josh and the tough news for everybody else in Kingsport is that shortly after that report, Joshie was promoted to Brooklyn.

Who will we look for in the bullpen now? In times of distress?! Well, stepping mightily into the shoes of Mr. Walker has been Andrew Mitchell. Yeah, it's a square name, but there's nothing square about 14 K's in your first 10 2/3 innings. That and a 0.84 WHIP have added up to a 0.84 ERA. One man disappears, and another jumps bravely and mightily into the breach. It's a way of life in The Volunteer State. Also cool!

As you can see from that photo, A-Mitch, the Mets 14th-round pick in last month's draft is a lefty. And there's nothing wrong with that. But you know what you can't see from that photo? Dandy Andy comes to the Mets out of New Orleans' Jesuit High School. Sound familiar? Look who's picture AM got to check out in the trophy case every day?

That guy on the right, of course, is one Daniel Joseph Staub, from JHS's Class of 1962. Somewhere, in Met Heaven, it was decreed that no baseball season should pass without the Mets linked to a lefty out of Jesuit. That, my friends, is cool.

Jarred Kelenic has been cool too... in the wrong sense of the word. But hey, cooling off after a hot start isn't the biggest sin in the world for a first rounder. There's plenty offense to go around, and a lot of it has come from 2017's 26th-rounder, firstbaseman Gavin Garay. Gav, returning to Kingsport after a wet noodle of a season in 2017, has hit 5 homers in just 18 games, locking into a .949 OPS for the righthanded stick out of LaGrangeville, NY (populated entirely by ZZ Top fans, presumably).

After hanging on for a 7-6 victory yesterday, the K-Mets sit within reach, 4.0 games out in the Appalachian League West Division, in second place, behind the Elizabethton Twins. They begin a series tomorrow against the last-place Greenville Reds, with Dedniel NuÃ±ez on the mound.

This year's #1 Jarred Kelenic is struggling on the interstate after his promotion to Kingsport, but has been improving lately.
But Keith Law has been impressed with last year's #1 (#2?) Mark Vientos, who was drafted as a shortstop.
From a recent poscast:
Nick: I know you were a fan of Mark Vientos coming into the draft last year. He is having a solid year so far in the Appy League. What type of player do you see him developing into? Is he a solid defender at 3B?

Keith Law: Small sample so far but Iâ€™m thrilled to see him showing some power too. Solid defender at third trending up.

Kingsport played a double header yesterday, and Luis Santana, their cleanup hitter (and my adoptee), did not play in either game.
I don't know if he's hurt or got promoted.
If promoted, he would go to Columbia, but they did not play yesterday.

Santana exited Monday's game after getting hit by a pitch in his second trip to the plate.

He's got real helium. I've seen him ranked between #9 and #18 on Mets prospect lists recently, while rarely cracking the top 50 going into the season. Hopefully it's just a day-to-day thing. He hasn't been DL'd.

Rookie manager (and early Edgy DC adoptee) Sean Ratliff largely treaded water with his Kingsport Mets in his first season managing a squad. His final record, 33-35, dipped below .500, but Pythagoras says that shouldn't have been, and well, you can argue with Pythagoras, but considering he died circaâ€‰495 BC, good luck in getting satisfaction. This was nonetheless good enough for second place in the West Division of the Appalachian League, seven games behind the Elizabethton Twins, so whatever success they didn't manage to have, they were still close enough to smell, and it earned them aa playoff spot, with which they battled ably in their first-round loss

One guy who didn't smell at all was starting pitcher Willy Taveras. No sir. He was not only effective virtually every time out, but he had all the run support luck that Jacob deGrom missed out on, turning his 2.93 ERA into a gobsmacking 5-0 record. Yeah, he didn't pile up the strikeouts (6.7/9), but he tamped down on the walks (1.3/9), kept the ball in the park (0.6 HR/9), and walked away with win after win. You honor that sort of performance.

Yeah, pitching wins are misrepresentative, but it's not like he hasn't performed in his previous stops in the Dominican Summer League and the Gulf Coast League. On his career, he's 17-6 with a 2.55 ERA. You know what that has gotten him on Mets prospect lists? Bupkis. He's typically outside the top 30. But that's going to change. Those numbers are too close to Dwight Gooden's rookie season to ignore. He's about to blow up.

But I hear you. You want more sizzle with your steak. Well JosÃ© Butto went 3-0 with a 1.93 ERA in 32 2/3 innings before getting called up to Brooklyn. Due disclosure, he didn't do well there. But he's set the DSL on fire previously. He'll perform.

I hear you, though. You want offense. Well you get plenty of it from Mark Vientos. The third baseman/shortstop whacked an impressive 11 homeruns and 52 RBI in just 60 games, en route to an .878 OPS. You like to see that kind of swatting in the lower minors, especially from infielders.

Did somebody mention infielders?! Well, let's talk about Luis Santana! St. Louis helped bolster a strong offensive attack with a well-rounded .348 / .446 / .471 // .917. Along with Gavin Garay and Shervyn Newton, the K-Mets were hitting all around the infield.

Look for more offense going forward from a team managed by a converted batting coach, and if you happen to be riding south down the Appalachian Ridge next summer, swing by The Model City and take in the action.
