1967

Drew Gagnon, scheduled to make his Mets debut tonight, will be the 48th Met of the 2018 season. With more debuts likely to follow in the coming weeks as the Mets go into sell mode as the non-waiver trade deadline nears, this could be the season that the Mets break the franchise record for most players in a season --- 54 in 1967.

If it means a title in two years, I'm all for it.

That year some pitcher named Seaver made his debut.

And tonight, we start another rookie righthander.

The similarities are inescapable.

Indubitably!

Re: 1967

Didn't they come real close or possibly tie 1967 in a recent season? There were 52 last year, so maybe I'm thinking of that one.

One potential difference from 1967 is that this looks like it might be one of those Willard Mullin "broken plank" seasons.

Also 52 in 2004, 53 in 2009.

Re: 1967

2009 must be what I was thinking of.

Just looking at the 40-man, we still have possible 2018 debuts of Jamie Callahan, Gavin Cecchini, Marcos Molina, T.J. Rivera, and David Wright coming.

Does anybody know what Cecchini's status is? He hasn't played since May 9.

He was pretty hot in late February iirc

Wow, I forgot about that record. I want to say that's very kool but that's very bad. Not an indicator of a good team or season.

Re: 1967

Matt den Dekker, slated for tonight's starting lineup, will be the 49th Met of the season. And we're not even at the All Star break yet. The record looks like toast. Sigh. I'm gonna miss playing Name the '67 Mets trivia.

Re: 1967

I was looking at the UMDB 2018 Mets page and there's no way I could name as many of this year's Mets as 1967 Mets. Not even close. Shows how much attention I've been paying this season.

Re: 1967

You mean by recognizing their faces? I can't do it either. When selecting the photos I had to find several examples to make sure I was getting a photo of the correct guy. (Because sometimes an image search on one player returns photos of someone else.) If there's anyone here who knows what these players look like and wants to double-check my photo selections, I'd be appreciative.

Re: 1967

I think I'm pretty good at being able to ID a Met from a photo. Better than most. I know Zvon's great at that. I was talking about simply being able to name 2018 Mets. Like Kaczmarski. Who's that? I could name you Moock and Grzenda and Billy Murphy without thinking even though I never saw them play but some fringe Met from two weeks ago, not so sure.

On another note, Jose Bautista is one of the most popular 2018 Mets, more than Thor.
