Fascinating Sports Illustrated article about the young Dave Kingman, that hints at the marvel and enigma that he would become, but also at the peripheral skills (foot speed, arm) that he had stopped exhibiting at a relatively early part of his career, as well as some (lateral movement, eagerness to learn), that few ever associated with him. KINGSIZE PHENOM FOR THE GIANTS Even as the hyperbole flows, Dave himself gives a more sober assessment of his game. "I have many, many weaknesses as a hitter," he acknowledges. "I have trouble with off-speed pitches, and I'm working on that. I have always been aggressive at the plate. Now I'm learning more about waiting for my pitch. Screwballs bother me. I'm still not sure who had the advantage the first time around—the pitchers or me. But we'll see."
