Knicks 2018-19

Thursday is the NBA draft and the beginning of the "lets see how the Knicks are going to fuck it up this time" season.

Right now their roster looks like this:

Ntilikina / Lee / Hardaway / KP* / Kanter +
Burke / Baker / Thomas / OQuinn+ / Noah ++
Mudiay / Dotson / Williams/ _____ / _____

*KP will be on the DL most or all of this season
+Kanter and OQuinn have player options (they are likely to opt out)
++Noah will probably be released using the "stretch" provision to soften the cap impact

So given the complete dearth of front court players (due to injury, opt outs, and lack of depth), the Knicks will probably take a guard on Thursday.

I'm hoping they resist the temptation and take the best big man they can. My inside info tells me they're very high on Kentucky's 1-and-done, Kevin Knox, the youngest kid in the draft. He's a combo forward with mucho skills, size and wingspan. He's raw, but his ceiling is all-star level. Alot of mocks have them taking Villanova's Mikal Bridges, a nice 3-and-D small forward, but the Knicka think he's maxed out his ability and won't develop much more. He'll be a nice complimentary NBA player, but not an all-star. They're not high on Trae Young (thank goodness), so my PG worries are probably baseless. But we'll see i guess.

In any event, they'll need to sign some centers and power forwards in free agency, which begins July 1.

Because the Nets traded away all those draft picks, for the last few years Nets fans have called this season "pass-over".
Which is worse, crappy picks or no picks?
We shall see.

Usually you wont know for sure that your pick is crappy until at least summer league, so at least there will be FALSE hope for the Knicks!

Frederic Weis never even played in the summer league (i don't think...)! So sometimes we don't even have FALSE hope. In fact everybody knew it was a crappy pick immediately, as local hero Ron Artest was the next pick.

Re: Knicks 2018-19

Not to restrict things to only NYK picks, but for a league where the players in the draft pool are supposedly closest to big-league ready, there are still an awful lot of really bad draft picks from
the top half, or even top 1/3, of the 1st round.

Meanwhile, the Warriors won this year where their main players (top-5 by minutes played) were drafted:
- 11th overall - Klay Thompson
- 35th overall - Draymond Green
- 7th overall - Steph Curry
- a twice-traded 9th overall pick from 14 years ago - Andre Ingodada
- and one key FA signing in Durant (originally 2nd overall)

Sometimes the stuff at the top of the heap turns out to be fool's gold.

Re: Knicks 2018-19

The NBA also has the least number of spots. If you assume a professional career is 10 years, an NBA team needs to find a starter once in 2 drafts (the top 15 picks should be starters). An NFL team needs to find 2.5 in each draft, baseball needs about 1.5 per draft ... The bar for being a good pick is consequently higher.

Re: Knicks 2018-19

You need to see the video of Adam Silver announcing the Knicks pick. His eyebrows go up like Mr Spock as he incredulously names the player seen by most as a late first rounder.

In reading all the draft coverage the thing that bugs me the most, besides Bridges still being on the board, is the consistent description of Knox as a combo forward who "shies away from contact" - Anthony Mason rolling over in his grave.

As i predicted, the Knicks were very high on Knox (he's now the Knicks' Knox!). At 18, with length, skills, tools and an outside shot, he's a wing who can play big or small, who is raw but with an all-star caliber ceiling. That he "shies away from contract" is what people say who don't like a player. I don't know what his toughness level is yet, but i think that's yet to be determined. Also, as much as i loved Mason, his style of play has been legislated out of the game. Mase would either have adapted or been thrown out of the league.

Their high risk / high reward strategy also played out in round 2, when they took the 7'1" headcase center Mitchell Robinson, who never played in college after dropping out and hasn't played anywhere in over a year. He's a modern big... long, quick, can run the floor, blocks shots and finishes around the rim. If he actually has the will to compete at the NBA level, he could be an absolute steal in the 2nd R, but he's just as likely to end up bagging groceries for tips.

I give it up to the new Knicks regime.. they went for two teenagers with the best available upside, not for instant production next year. After all, they weren't going to change the fortunes of this franchise with a safe pick like Mikal Bridges. It's ballsy, big picture thinking, which the Knicks haven't had much of recently (like ever).

Re: Knicks 2018-19

Post-draft roster:

Ntilikina / Hardaway / [Knox] / KP* / Kanter +
Burke / Lee / Williams / Thomas / [Robinson]
Mudiay / Baker / Dotson / _____ / Noah++

*KP will be on the DL most or all of the 2018-19 season
+Kanter has a player option (he is likely to opt out; OQuinn already has)
++Noah will probably be released using the "stretch" provision to soften the cap impact

With KP injured, OQuinn gone, Kanter likely opting out too, and Noah likely cut, we'll need to find some bigs in free agency, which begins July 1, or sign some UDFAs or foreign players now.

BTW, the current roster now has only 3 players over age 26. Lee and Thomas might have some trade value; Noah will have to be cut. Then, it will be a real children's crusade. They should trade them and go for an 82 loss season and the #1 pick next year. With this young, talented (and mostly cheap) core, a returning KP, a #1 (or top 3, at least) pick, and a lot of cap space, i think we'll be able to land a max deal FA in 2019 (maybe 2, if they can find someone to take Hardaway too).

But 2018 will be a total crash-and-burn. I just hope the new GM has the guts to see it through and resists the temptation to sign vets like Beasley. Based on his picks this year, i think he does.

Lets hope you are right - I can at least get behind the concept that Porzingis is out most of this year so lets suck again with guys who arent ready and pick high again

Why stretch Noah now though instead of keeping him in the books this summer and waiting until next year when cutting him would afford you further financial flexibility?

Summer League schedule starts tomorrow.
I'm looking forward to seeing Frankie, Kevin and Mitchell on the floor together.

According to my inside source, the Knicks depth chart looks like this right now:

starters: Ntilikina / Hardaway / Knox / Hezonja* / Kanter
rotation: Burke / Dotson / Thomas / Kornet+
bench: Mudiay, Baker, Williams, Lee++
reserve: Robinson+, KP*
G-League/2-way: A.Trier, Hicks*
cut: Noah+

*KP will be on the DL most or all of the 2018-19 season, so they still need to sign a PF/C. OQuinn just signed with Pacers, and Amir Johnson with 76ers.
+Noah will probably be released after 9/1, using the "stretch" provision to soften the cap impact.
++ They're still looking to trade Lee.

Re: Knicks 2018-19

ok, summer league under way. 2 games this weekend, a win over Atlanta and a loss to Utah.

91-89, over Hawks
-Knox (22pts/8reb) and Robinson (9pts/8/reb/4blk) both make an impression;
- Trier fills up the all the categories (15pts/6reb/4as/3st);
- 2nd year player Dotson (13pt/8reb/4ass) also plays all-around game;
- Ntilikina's defense was solid but his offense (5pts/5ass/3TO) looked unimproved;
- Williams (17pts) offers punch off the bench.

85-90, to Jazz
- Robinson again impressive (12pts/11reb/2blk);
- Knox doesn't shoot well (5-15), but fills up the sheet (19pt/5/reb/2ass/2st);
- Trier scores 15pts but is awful (4-16);
- Dotson is invisible;
- Ntikilina is much better (17pts/6ass); and
- Williams again makes a contribution off the bench (8pts/7reb)

Knicks fans have to be happy by Mitchell Robinson who, though still playing himself back into game shape, has tremendous athleticism and is going to be a force on defense (to begin) and will finish around the basket. Whether he and/or Knox develop a jump shot will determine their futures, but you've got to like what both are showing now. Ntilikina has to show more consistent aggression on offense.

Kornet and Hicks have been out with injuries.

Re: Knicks 2018-19

a loss to Lakers, 109-92

The Knicks (1-2) were led by first-round pick Kevin Knox. The 6-foot-9 forward collected a game-high 29 points, to go along with nine rebounds and two assists. Mitchell Robinson amassed 13 points, eight rebounds and three blocks. Allonzo Trier accumulated 21 points, 10 rebounds and five assists on 8-of-13 shooting. Troy Williams led the bench with 15 points, two rebounds, three assists and two steals.

With Ntilikina out for this game (groin strain), they started the SG, Trier, at PG and he had a good all-around game: 21pt /10reb /5as. Trier has been up and down, but is showing a lot of promise as a split-contract guy. The other split contract guy, Hicks, came back from injury to play a few ineffective minutes. But draft picks Knox and Robinson still showing a ton of talent. Williams has been an excellent 6th man, scoring more than i thought he could. But Dotson was dreadful; he's been a disappointment so far.

Re: Knicks 2018-19

Knicks (1-3) lose to Celts, 75-82

starters: Trier / Dotson / Knox / Kornet / Robinson

*Robinson continues to dominate the summer league, with 17pts on 8-10 shooting, plus 12reb / 6bk(!) / 3stl (with 0 TOs)
*Knox continues to mix highlight plays with inefficient scoring (5-20 shooting) and erratic play (5 TOs) chipping in 15pt / 4reb / 3ast
*Trier was again at PG for injured Ntilikina, and was more effective this time (17pt / 3reb/ 3ast);
*Williams continues to make contributions off the bench as a 6th man (8pt/8reb/2st);
*Kornet & Hicks were both back from injuries, but made no impact. Neither did starter Dotson, who continues to disappoint this summer.

Re: Knicks 2018-19

Knicks clobber NO, 102-83 in last summer league game, while resting most of the starters, including Ntilikina, Knox, Kornet and Trier. But Dotson and Robinson played and had big games. Its good to see Dotson finally play a good game; he's been awful this summer. I am really looking for a breakout year from his this season. Other contributors were PG Tyrius Walker who filled up the stat sheet (16pt/5reb/6ass/5stl) and backup PF/C Dan Ochefu (22pt/8reb). Hicks and Williams contributed, too.

i don't think anybody played themselves into a training camp invite this summer that wasn't already on the roster. Maybe Ochefu, since they need another big to add some depth up front.

places to trade Courtney Lee - teams with extra PF, on a contract with 1 year left and similar cap hit:

New Orleans - Nikola Mirotic
Indy - Thaddeus Young
Brooklyn - Faried
Sac - Zach Randolph

We'd probably have to add a 2nd rounder for any of these guys, which is fine. Just opens up more cap space for next year and fills a hole this year.
I'm not that interested in having Randolph back, but what the hell.
Mirotic is my first choice.

Knicks sign 23-year old PF/C, Noah Vonleh. Not sure what the contract is yet.
He is yet another lottery pick bust/reclamation project. He hasn't done much anywhere over the course of his first 5 NBA seasons with 3 different teams, but he's you know, big.

I suppose he'll fill the niche of "useless big man named Noah" after they cut Joakim Noah.

bench: Mudiay, Dotson, Robinson
reserve: Baker, KP (DL)
G-League: A.Trier, Hicks
invitees: Kadeem Allen (G), Tyrius Walker (G), Jeff Coby (F)

- Noah will be cut shortly;
- They are still looking to trade Lee (and probably Hardaway, too), if anybody would take either of them;
- Allen, Walker or Coby could push Hicks for the 2nd 2-way G-League slot. I think Trier's slot is safe, for now.

Opening Day!

CBS ranks the starting lineup for each team and they rank our `Bockers dead last:

https://www.cbssports.com/nba/news/rank ... -stack-up/

They finished the pre-season 3-2 and here is some things we learned:

* Allonzo Trier is a player. Though on a G-league/split contract, he should find playing time in NY eventually. He can create his own shot better than just about any guard on the roster;
* Mudiay is NOT a player. As one of 4 first-round busts on the roster, they'll give him minutes, but he'll play himself out of the rotation eventually;
* Unlike Mudiay, Vonleh and Burke are worthy reclamation projects. As the other first-round busts, they've shown a lot so far, but the 4th guy, Herzonja, remains a mystery;
* Robinson and Knox are rookies with enormous talent but a long way to go. There'll be some great nights and some horrible ones for both of them;
* Kanter continues to be a low-post force, a defensive liability, and a nightly double-double;
* Thomas's defense, efficiency and veteran leadership has earned him KP's starting spot at power forward, where he will be overmatched on a nightly basis;
* Hardaway is a hugely overpaid cap-hit with a 1-dimensional game who we're stuck with;
* Lee is the forgotten man who they are still looking to trade;
* Kornet is OK when he hits 3s, but can't do much else;
* Dotson is still just potential without production. He may get some minutes this year to see what he can actually do;
* Hicks is purely a g-leaguer; and
* Baker is the mascot.

Also,

* KP will probably not come back this year. There's no point in rushing him.
* Until they trade Lee, he should get minutes off the bench.
* Robinson could end up in the g-league or starting rotation. He's a total wildcard.
*The only other open question is who is going to start at PG, Burke or Ntilikina. They like Ntilikina coming off the bench as a combo guard, so I'm looking for Burke to start.

starters: Burke / Hardaway / Knox / Thomas / Kanter
rotation: Ntilikina / Lee / Hezonja / Vonleh / Robinson
bench: Mudiay, Dotson, Kornet
reserve: Baker, KP
G-League/split: Trier, Hicks

Re: Knicks 2018-19

A ballsy, last-second, opening-day move by Coach Fisdale... Knox has been a mess in the pre-season, so he's starting Ntilikina tonight at SF, a position he's never played before.

This is good because:
- he is establishing his authority with a very young team;
- he's actually taking pressure OFF of Knox by letting him come into the game later, against other rotational players;
- he's rewarding Ntilikina for his defense; and
- He's also offering proof for his statements that:
[indent:urivd0lo]*he believes in "positionless basketball", where players are multidimensional and play defense;
*everybody has to fight for playing time, and nobody is guaranteed anything; and
*he wants to change the culture.[/indent:urivd0lo]
I can't remember the last time i said this about a Knicks coach, but "Good move, coach."

Between the Knox move and Mudiay's ankle sprain, tonight's roster will probably be something like this:

starters: Burke / Hardaway / Ntilikina / Thomas / Kanter
rotation: Lee / Knox / Hezonja / Robinson
bench: Baker, Dotson, Vonleh, Kornet
IR/reserve: Mudiay, KP
G-League/split: Trier, Hicks

although, if he wanted to extend his policy to the bench, too, then Vonleh would get Hezonja's minutes. Hezonja has been lost and Vonleh has been better than expected. I guess we'll see tonight.

next stop: Cleveland

Last week, Fizdale put an "all-youngster" lineup on the floor that was quite effective: Ntilikina / Trier / Dotson / Knox / Robinson. Trier is hurt now, and Ntilikina and Knox aren't getting starter's minutes, but this is a lineup i'd like to see more of, along with Vonleh, whose been a total stud. Meanwhile, Fizdale is considering putting Knox back in the starting rotation, which is good because Hezonja has been useless and Knox needs to develop. Speaking of, I'm still not sure why Mudiay is getting minutes over Ntilikina, but he is. Meanwhile, Frenchie has been heating up. Trier and Burke are hurt, but Burke should be ready shortly. Dotson has been great as a "3 and D" wing.

Also, Courtney Lee has agreed to go down to the G-league, to get himself on track. Hopefully, he'll be able to establish some trade value so they can move him.

starters: Mudiay / Hardaway / Knox / Vonleh / Kanter
rotation: Ntilikina / Dotson / Hezonja / Robinson
bench: Baker, Kornet
injuries: Trier, Burke, Thomas, KP
G-League: Lee, Hicks
