This is about Joe Jackson, the enduring artist who has morphed from style to style, not the allegedly abusive father or the allegedly gambling ballplayer. I like Joe. He took some detours into classic and soundtracks that I didn't like too much. But his pop and rock stuff is solid, from the new waveish start to the more traditional stuff of late. No one can accuse him of playing it safe, with the side trips to jive and blues, the live CD before a hushed audience and the reunited original band. I chose "Look Sharp" out of the selections provided, but I would listen to that album over and over and over again. My faves off that album include "One More Time", "Sunday Papers" and "Got the Time". I haven't made a list in a while, but Look Sharp! is one of my Top 25 Albums of All Time.

My first reaction when I saw the list was also "Where's 'Another World'?" That's far and away my #1. After that, it's probably a 20-way tie. Joe was one of those artists who consistently cranked out great songs without a single masterpiece. David Bowie was like that, too.

Joe is so prolific I don't know if I can narrow it down to a single song. That version of YCGWYWTYKWYW posted above is flat-out sizzling but there's others, and still others. Joe in addition to being a very ambitious composer is a killer arranger who always chooses great musicians to play with and will perform a handful of his favorites with different stylistic approaches on every tour. Right now he's touring with a small combo (drummer, guitarist and his longtime bassman Graham Maby). I've seen Joe five times I think. At least once, I realized I was so entranced by Sue Hadjopoulos that I forgot she wasn't the star of the show. And that's leaving aside how awesome Graham Maby is. I picked "Fridays," but i can pick any number of tracks, including deeper cuts than that, depending on my mood. As a lifelong phan, I must admit that he's written a lot of weak lyrics over the years, but when he nails it, it stays nailed. For instance, the syncopation on that song above is so complex that I can't even figure out the time signature, but it somehow still feels pretty danceable. 'Bucket put up a JJ poll once before under the title "What's Your Cuppa Joe?" but hell if I can find it.

He's coming here to Grand Rapids on July 20! That moment to fast-forward to was really cool! I have a love-hate relationship with Joe's lyrics. Sometimes I think he's a little cruder than he needs to be in spots, sometimes a little more unpleasant. I think the music in "Cancer" is great, but I don't want to sing about that topic. But I think "Hometown" and "Still Alive" are brilliant. I think the versatility shows the strength of his songwriting. "You Can't Get What You Want" with full horn treatment is amazing. But he's got a live version with guitars that is flaming hot, and another live version with just piano/bass/drum that is also fantastic.

As for the specific content of "Cancer," Joe is an odd duck in that he's (still) a pro-smoking activist, and insists that nicotine is only carcinogenic when combined with alcohol or something.

John Mellencamp also is on record stating that smoking is only detrimental to your health in conjunction with alcohol. He say he may be right, but admits he could be wrong. Since he hasn't had a single drink in over 20 years, he says his belief gives him comfort.

I think I may be conflating Joe and John's position. I know that Joe is some sort of truther when it comes to studies about the dangers of second-hand smoke.

Me too, although I've corrected my JJ Live deficiency since 2007. I voted for I'm the Man then, which I absolutely wore through as a pimply teen. There was still a mountain of JJ stuff to tackle for me at that point; I've since become more familiar with and fond of latter-day stuff like Vol. 4 and the stream helped me process Duke and Fast Forward in real time. I was just spinning N&D II the other day. This time I voted for YCGWYW, only because I'm impressed with the NRG & musicianship of that clip. I mean, fuck.
